Decline in talent under Richt and Diaz

Richt voluntarily resigning and giving substantial funds back to the school to replace him (and earlier for the IPF) washed away his mistakes and absolves him of all criticism imo. He made the program respectable again with a taste of real success in 2017, and set it up to succeed had Beta Blake not flushed the opportunity down the toilet.
Absolutely. Very few men would have done what he did in that situation. About as selfless as you can get.

something to look back on in awe: if (when) the deserving guys get into the Pro HOF, we will have had a Hall of Famer in six straight draft classes (and 7 of 8):

'99: Edge
'00: no
'01: Reggie Wayne*
'02: Ed Reed
'03: Andre J
'04: Wilfork*
'05: Gore*
'06: Hester

that is ******* NUTS to think about. will never happen again.

Who knows, maybe Ward is the first not the last generational player Mario brings in?

Manny was quite frankly one of the worst evaluators of high school talent ever. Other than having a couple Covid kids fall in his lap, he did nothing from 2016 to 2022.

This is why I was mope for a long time they were bringing in ****. Then had all the media tell us these kids were good. Knowing **** well the casual super fan would eat that up. Anyone knew we were talentless period, we aren’t even super talented now. We have talent but there is a long way to go if you want to stack the nfl.
We are talented now. Michigan recruited in the range we recruit now and won a title and send bunch of first round picks to the league. We have 3 players we recruited legit being talked about as 1st round picks. Draft eligible players. At some point the coaches need to coach up the talent they get so they can then get more of the better ones. ND CB they said is a 1st round pick was a 3 star recruit. Bama has the talent u speak of and got beat to sleep by FSU. The coaches need to earn their checks

Richt would have murdered recruiting in the NIL era. Too bad we got him past him prime. Wonderful man and great football coach who players loved.
IMO NIL/Portal is the difference when comparing the Richt & Cristobal

It would be like (If they were NFL coaches) - Richt just had the NFL Draft, Cristobal has the Draft + Free Agency

I personally don't care how we get them - I'm just happy Cristobal is getting some dudes.

Michigan was able to win games with Gattis as OC.

The average tenure of a player in the league is 3-4 years. This specific dataset is a much bigger indictment of Diaz than Richt.

We used to consistently rank 5-10 on this list even after some of the glory days players retired. I’m going to finish my recruiting class look back now that we are past Notre Dame, but here is a sneak preview: Richt and Diaz were catastrophically bad recruiters for us:

Was it recruiting misses., or development failures? Would like to see a listing of where we ranked in the Diaz/ Richt years on recruiting classes/.

At the end of the day, every coach has a base position he or she is responsible for. Cristobal is OL, Richt was QB, Manny was LB. My indictment on Manny, and any coach really, is how well you recruit your base position. As a HC, your base position cannot be a weakness of the team. Manny could never bring in talented LBs. The quarterman, Pinckney, McCloud trio was committed to Golden and stayed on board with Richt. Every thing after that was terrible.

I've never been more shocked and angry in relation to sports than when Richt retired (cos he wouldn't fire his son), walking away from a boatload of money and gave us the freedom to hire a great coach and the AD ****ed down his leg and got played by Manny Diaz.
The complete and utter ineptitude of Blake James. Just absolutely disgusting. A guy that should’ve never been athletic Director here in a million years. Well done on that garbage hire Donna! SMH

How did Richt recruit the QB position at Miami?
