Daylen Russell is not hurt but your feelings might be

Can’t even take guys that you know are 3 year projects anymore. This dude was never supposed to see the field until year 3 and he’s transferring before he even gets there
We took a high-character local kid to appease the South Florida mob. It is what it is. Sometimes you have to play the political game.

Artavius Jones is 6’3” 305 lbs, and may have another 3 years of eligibility. Russell is 6’3” 298, so they are comparable in size. Both got great offers out of high school in 2024, but It appears Jones from Blountstown got slightly better offers.

If he wants to transfer and play right away, now is the time. Russell will get opportunities in the portal because he has 3 years of eligibility and big DT bodies are hard to find, especially if he has any type of athletic ability.

Good luck to him. I hope he changes his mind and decides to stay, like Moten did. If he has the work ethic, he can provide depth even if he doesn’t start.
Size may be comparable (major pause) but Jones in a different class of power & explosiveness. Way higher ceiling. But injuries can derail anyone. This offseason is a pivotal one for him. Lets see what he and coach Lewis can do.

The days of guys willingly being long-term projects who are solid, reliable depth pieces and being consummate 'program guys' are basically over, it seems..

Either they get processed out, as they get recruited over, or they seek NIL opportunities elsewhere as they want to make a few bucks before their playing days come to a conclusion as the end of their college career

It is what it is.

He doesn't fit what they ask the DT's to do. Just not explosive enough to be a lag nose nor cross the face of a C and chase the ball.

Really played well as a NT, which is interesting because that is not at all where I would've placed him in college (hence why I do Finance rather than football).

Good film against bad competition. He will land somewhere decent and be pretty good is my projection.

UM could use another 330lbs war daddy NT type that can run and plays with a high motor. The SEC & Big10 can't horde them all.

Go Canes

It is hard to blame a player for this or program. It is what it is. Well put.

this speaks to the idea of stash and develop in the NIL era ... tough ask, especially along the lines of scrimmage

True story, but you will always have a "sign everyone and redshirt them all" in the crowd as if this was the 1980s.

redshirting across the board is now a thing of the past. Maybe interior lineman are about the only ones you really RS regularly

Reality is you have to find out quickly what you have, how much NIL allocation they are worth moving forward, and also, if you are a playoff caliber team ready to make a real run, you are going to play 15-plus games

That means you need as many bodies as you can get that can play some sort of role

Could be way off here but think this is where Mario helps. More likely we can get OL to redshirt or stick around and trust the process.

I think most Olineman understand that their timeline is different in terms of development. I generally want OL's stacked with 4th and 5th year players

Also, this is why blowouts matter -- they allow you to empty the bench and organically develop depth

We need at least one of these project OL we have taken from '23-present to become a starter, or we should just stop it IMO. Tinilau and Tripp have already transferred.

So go be great Kinsler/Plazz/Minaya/Francavilla/Wilkerson/Campbell/guys from this year. Or at least be adequate, lol.

Yeah the approach Mario had when he first got here is hopefully much different that what we see going forward

Seems that way already

So much of that early portal and recruiting was just bringing in people to fill the roster

Tough though these days when rosters can changed so dramatically so quickly
