Darrin Smith Interview w/Footballville

If Barrow/Armstead/Smith had come out in this era of football they would have all been 1st-2nd round picks. The NFL at that time didnt really know what to do with guys who were "small" in size but fast as ****. They were WAAAAAAAY before there time. LBs who could cover slot WRs? (that 91' Houston game performance they put on would have had all of them going in the top 20 in the draft in this era) And you never had to take off the field? FREAKs.

Take bigger HS Safeties & LBs, and turn them into College LBs & DEs, gee, what a concept!!! LOL

Never understood why these egg-headed DCs we've had here lately have gotten away from this philosophy, now we take slow *** LBs like Flagg, who wasn't a take AT ALLLL!!!, and turn them into Mike LBs...unbelievable.

Bama changed everything. Once they started dominating on D with those run of big a$$ LBs they had (DeMeco Ryans, Rolando McClain, Dont'a Hightower, etc) everyone including Golden and D'nofrio felt like you had to adjust to the college game. Remember the "It is no longer okay to be a 200lb LB recruit at UM anymore" talk? We tried to be something we arent.

Looks like we are going back to the old days with Mario. You dont need a 235lb core of LBs to dominate in college football.

Very impressive but modest guy.

Never indicated how his great development made him one of the best,
but gave credit to determination and hard work...........and operating under the radar......Actions spoke louder than words...

Sounds like Mario to me............................." we got to grind, and work, work, work".........there is no substitute.
Darrin Smith would sign that statement.

And the thing about it, we didn't really have a core 200# LBs in our heyday. Bermuda Triangle were some big dudes. A lot of of those names that Smith was rattling off in that interview were some big dudes. The only regime that I can remember trotting out HS sized LBs was the Shannon regime.

Bam-bam, Superman and? I can’t remember Smith’s nickname and he was the highest drafted of all.
