How many of you upset at the hiring of Diaz had Dan Mullen in your Top 5 to replace Golden? If you did, why?

I'm disappointed with Diaz. Richt could and should have done better. I think comparing Diaz to D'Onofrio is a bit overdramatic, but we're all entitled to our opinion. I'm now left hoping the combination of improved talent, a great DL coach, a top S&C coach (if indeed Pat Ivey is hired), and growth by Diaz as a DC will provide a defense good enough to win. We're still waiting on a DB coach.

I did not have a favorable opinion of Mullen as the next Canes HC. I often read the 'he'd kill with Miami talent' but the statistical bottom line was he was a .500 coach against D-1 opponents, and 4-29 against ranked teams. If we're going to critique Diaz on his defensive rankings over his career I find it appropriate to critique his last boss (as of Saturday) on the only statistic that really matters. Wins and losses.

Anyone else?

That's an interesting question as one would assume that Mullen would have brought Diaz with him here.

I wanted Mullen. Didn't want him to bring Diaz.

Was hoping Mullen would get John Chavis to jump from the aTm sinking ship. If not, grab Todd Orlando from Houston with a nice raise. Or, maybe even get Geoff Collins from Florida.

My gripes against Manny were surface level stuff. His stats aren't great. And I felt like Mullen didn't have the name or history to bring Manny.

But had Mullen been the HC and brought Manny, I suspect I would have gotten over it quickly. Because the last 2 DCs Mullen has hired have been stolen by Texas and Florida. So, if he thinks Manny can coach, I would have trusted his choice.

Just like I'm trusting Richt, now.

When I was afraid we were looking at Schiano or Butch, I was screaming for Mullen. Considered Diaz then, because it seemed automatic that he'd come, right or wrong. And as a whole I was ready to take them with glee, again in light of who I thought was the alternative. But there wasn't much thought given to Diaz as an individual.

You know, it's really hard to ***** up an attacking 4-3 with South Florida athletes.

How was our defense under Tim Walton and John Lovett???

Walton was a first time DC who Shannon was an idiot for promoting still had the 53rd defense. Lovett's defense was 36th. Both of those were way better than the 83rd ranked defense we've been watching. However, Diaz has more experience an success than those two combined so I think he'll know how to run a simple 4-3 withMiami players.

Now now, you said it's really hard to ***** up an attacking 4-3, and yet both of those former UM DCs didnt get the job done.

Maybe they didn't have the extra secret "4-3 for Dummy's"???

I was adamantly AGAINST mullen in several threads.

not thrilled about diaz but not upset either. Think with coach kool here and a softer schedule, think he has the chance for success but time will tell. One pleasant thought is that Richt is not afraid to fire coordinators that aren't performing, did it several times at UGA

so according to your signature you were happy with D'onofrio's defense am I right? because last year Miami finished 14th in total defense and 37th in scoring defense.

because your only measuring stick for success is total defensive yards and scoring defense. Not taking in account time of possession, opponent schedules, TFL, yards per play, completion percentage, 3rd down conversion rates, lesser talent, etc.

I think it's hard to use any of the past few coordinators as the HCs they were working under were terrible. Richt is a much better coach. I think we have had some decent coordinators in the past ten years, but the whole was terrible. Like a good DC but a terrible offense or just bad recruiting to match what your trying to run. Look at it like this, Diaz gets off the field fairly consistently. Couple that with a good running game and a dynamicpassing attack led by Kaaya and all the sudden it looks pretty darn good. The key is the same as it's always been. Put teams away when you can. Every time the last regime had the chance they got all wet in the pants and got away from what got them the lead. The key is a HC that wants to bury teams. I think MR is that guy.

I wanted Mullen and have no problem with the Diaz hire. I am taking a wait and see approach

People would be cumming all over themselves if we hired Leavitt.

His defense was 85th in the nation.

Just relax.

I didn't want Mullen. I'm concerned, but don't see the point of complaining now.

Hopefully, Kool's involvement (and Ivey's) will elevate the results.

Serious question, how do we know that Richt didn't contact the 'guy I wanted instead of Diaz' and get turned down? I see people hammering Richt for going after Diaz instead of so and so, but we don't actually know that he didn't. What am I missing? I'm not trying to say Diaz is a monster hire, I don't know enough to say one way or the other. Just wondering why people automatically assume that Richt didn't try to get their guy and get turned down.

"Attacking 4-3" whatever you guys want to say. Just be happy that this guy actually will run a nickel or dime against teams trying to spread it out. The last 5 years I've had to watch linebackers covering WRs all game long with no adjustments whatsoever. Caveman football Dortio had us playing.

What is the difference? Second place for Aranda and Diaz or just Diaz?

The end result is Diaz. This is who Richt pegged his future to at UM. Let's hope for vastly improved results from Diaz.

Diaz + Coach Kul + Better Talent = dunno

If you wanted Mark as HC, you should be happy with his picks for staff. I wanted that other guy for HC, but Mark is our man now. If he is wrong his life here will not be pleasant.

What if the coach just didn't want to come here? In the case of Aranda, sounds like he got paid considerably more to go to LSU? Do we want to try to outbid LSU for him? You go to a car auction and the other guy raising his hand is a gazillionaire, you know if he wants the car he's going to get it. If he gives up at 2 million, did you really want to pay 2.2 million for a car worth 1 million? I'm not trying to argue, just saying just because we want something doesn't mean they want us or we can outbid the other people who can offer more. There's more at play than 'Richt sucks because he got Diaz' is all I'm saying.
I guess the difference is all the negativity shouldn't necessarily fall on Richt's shoulders.
