Dan Le Betard Show - Miami Scoop

Exactly. Mike Ryan made the point that you just mentioned that football success trickles to the other parts of the university as a whole. Like you said, Samson then seemingly pivoted and agreed with and reiterated that. He never makes the case then that UM doesn't understand this if we believe his assertion that they still really don't care about sports at all. So he basically just came off as scatterbrained and either putting forth an incomplete argument or one based in ideas that are running in opposition with each other.
Absolutely. Your bullshït radar ranges targets like mine does. The "I really said this, but then really didnt say it, you know what I'm saying?" Is a hallmark of the weak bullshït artist.

Like we've said earlier, the future will arrive and somebody is going to be right, somebody will be wearing an omelet.

We’re obviously telling Mario that it’s time to get in on the Ground Floor of The U’s Resurrection. And the Columbus High Mafia wants him to be the one to take down Saban and Bama.

👆Certainly a BIG MESSSAGE being sent.

Boom!!!

That’s why they want to run this like a professional organization. From scouting , evaluating , S&C and more money in recruiting. Development and evaluating has been the biggest issues here for a long time. More eyes and smart football people make a huge difference.
I’d advise everybody to look at the sidelines of these top college teams. Look at all the extra staff they have on the sideline that are either training staff or recruiter department. We will probably never have the support staff as bama and UGA but we have to close the gap.

It's not that easy. Depending on how U Health is structured, they just can't go buy ho-hos and mew recruiting trips on private planes.
Definitely understood. An annual profit that large can stand a little haircut to help revive a department that, when running on all cylinders, can be a cash cow once again for the school. Of course, any strategy employed to execute this move must be sound and logical...

Being part of a Health System with Level I trauma center.... $400MM doesn't last that long with a misstep or two.
U-Health doesn’t have a level 1 Trauma center, Jackson does. Though they are affiliated when it comes to some of the doctors working at both places and the VA as well, and im sure some money being exchanged also. U-Health is a private entity and Jackson is a County hospital hence why Alex Penelas as mayor pushed for a vote to increase the tax a half percent to increase revenue for Jackson.

The residency programs for the doctors are also affiliated with the university because they fall under academic medicine and make Jackson a teaching hospital for which they also get paid money by the federal government out of the tax money generated for the centers for Medicare and Medicaid services. Before, Jackson was the only
Level 1 trauma center south of Orlando and then others started opening up like Kendall Regional and such. Now, Main Baptist was denied their request to open a Trauma Center because SoFla has too high a Trauma Center to land area ratio. UMiami Hospital does not have a Trauma Center.

Moreover, Jackson benefits from Sovereign Immunity, limiting the liability ($$$) they face from "errors/missteps." There's also been a back and forth about whether UHealth should operate under the same immunity when providing services to government partners.

Absolutely. The problem is Sovereign Immunity is for government entities. That’s why Docs take pay cuts to go work at Jackson because of the SI. UHealth being private doesn’t have that. If they were to align that way for the SI they’re probably going to be subject to lower pricing, safety net services, and such which may end up cutting their profits even after including the liabilities incurred.

Understood. I once worked there in a legal capacity and was around for the beginning of this argument from UHealth re: its claim to SI when providing services to JHS. It doesn't have much to do with its turnaround, but interesting in a nerdy way nonetheless.

Do they have a claim or they can’t without becoming public to some capacity?

It's when they operate as an agent of Jackson. From the case I linked:

The Court examined the terms of the agreement and found that it clearly conferred sovereign immunity upon UM for its services in treating patients at Jackson pursuant to Section 768.28. It found that under the terms of the agreement and Section 768.28, UM was immune from suit because Dr. Salerno treated Morela Lazzari while acting as Jackson’s statutory agent.

A major takeaway from the case is that when the Florida Legislature amended Section 768.28(10) (f), UM and Jackson revisited their original agreement and amended it to ensure that UM would be entitled to sovereign immunity. This foresight allowed UM to be entitled to sovereign immunity in this case.

Ahh so they did have to edit their agreement and realign the partnership lol got it.

Not that I've ever worked on it directly, but they're in constant flux with that partnership/agreement. I'm surprised people haven't gone to blows over some of their...disagreements. Ha.

BTW, love your tagline. Reminds me of "el que da primero, da doble."
