One thing that is amazing about Morgan is, he had to learn not only defense, but LB’er on the fly. He was recruited as a FB.Dan Morgan is our all time leading tackler and had what might be the best individual season for a linebacker not just in UM history but in college football in general.
Ted Hendricks might be the all time best player at UM but he would be more considered an “edge” player than a true linebacker in the modern game.
Ray Lewis was also fantastic and I have no issue with anyone putting him at number one. I just give the edge to Morgan because he got his numbers while also playing next to another tackling machine, Nate Webster for most of his career.
I know. I had to tackle him in high school. And by tackle, I mean run pathetically after him. He did play defense too in high school but he was mostly known as a running back. One thing that is amazing about Morgan is, he had to learn not only defense, but LB’er on the fly. He was recruited as a FB.
they played absolutely phenomenal that night but just ran out of gasRay then Dan.
Watch the 1995 Orange Bowl and watch Ray and Warren shut down the National Champs (Neb) for 3 Qtr’s on an overall mediocre defense, until they became zombies from all our 3 and outs.
Single most dominant two player defense I’ve ever seen in a game, in college.
One of the things that makes The U so truly amazing is that things occur at Miami that seem impossible anywhere else on the planet. I am going to type two factually accurate statements. Only at The U can both of these be factually correct.
Statement #1: Ray Lewis is the greatest linebacker of all-time.
Statement #2: Dan Morgan is the greatest linebacker in Miami Hurricanes history.
Restrepo didn’t win any national awards. He was an All American but plenty of UM receivers have been named All Americans.I enjoy these kind of questions. Everyone defines “best” differently. Some by awards, some judge by their eyes.
Example…If it’s just about awards/stats then Xavier Restrepo would be the best WR to play at the University of Miami and that’s it. But… it’s not that cut and dry is it? For some it might be.
Watched both and I loved Dan while he was here. Absolute monster but for my eyes and what I saw… it’s Ray.

Dan Morgan, who is the only player EVER to win the Butkus, Bednarik and Nagurski award in the same season is on a whole different level.
Morgan is still the all time leader in tackles at Miami. That would make Dan the most decorated UM LB no argument there. Dan winning those awards means there wasn’t a better defensive player/LB in college football his Senior year… doesn’t necessarily mean he was better than Ray. He was better than everyone who played in the 99-00 football season. Now if your assertion is you watched them both play and Dan was better because he did “a,b and c” better on the field along with the awards then cool.
