DAILY DEBATE: What needs to improve in the running game?

It definitely lacks imagination. And no I don’t think we are limiting the playbook. Sure we’ll see a counter or outside run every now and then. But it seems few and far between. I just don’t think Dawson has great running schemes in his bag. It won’t be a problem until it is. I’m hoping it improves

I am praying when we stop the vanilla play calling against VT, we stop running inside zone. God help us. Like Allen Sat and all last year after game 4, almost every long run was broken outside because their was no hole inside. The run blocking this year is not near as good as last year. Their are easy adjustments to help get Martinez's running style going. The same can be said for S. Brown in the pass game. Hope this happens, come VT.

Could go under center. Idc what anyone says under center run and play action game can be great...

I also think when 70% of your runs are between the tackles that having such narrow splits just means smaller holes.

I don't think the "condensed formation" part matters like yall wanna think it does. The best Running teams in the NFL are the ones that are doing the most 12/21 personnell lol.

I’m not an x and O guy but has anyone noticed our linesplits look like they are running double wing .

So this was Martinez's first run of the game and it's a weird one to me. First off, you have 7 blocking 8 and it's set up terribly for the way Martinez will eventually run:

Pretty much everyone from Ball State crashes in mainly because everyone from Miami, except George, is crashing in.

It almost looks like it should be a counter play. I don't know why Restrepo crashes in and looks like he wants to seal the edge. There is nobody assigned to block the corner #26. Even though we don't have the numbers, two linemen are doubling up on one of the DTs.

The whole thing is just a s*** show. Somebody should pull up all the runs because they're telegraphed into stacked boxes that are stacked because all the Miami players are in tight.

Dawson confirmed have only used 5-10 percent of the playbook in certain aspects to hide the playbook. I suspect that is most likely referring to why we are just bullying teams straight up the middle every time Martinez is in rather than hitting anything outside

Like to see a little more use of the change of pace backs. Ajay, Johnson, Lyle seem a bit speeder.

However if it ain't broke...

I think we have to accept that our running game will not be as dynamic-appearing as many others. I think Mario views the running game as a demoralizer--like a "we are tougher than you." He is ok slogging along with 3-4 yard gains early on in an attempt to prove that our line can move yours. We do have some more dynamic plays, but we run a lot of plays between the guards because he views it as a message. When teams get fatigued or demoralized we pop bigger runs. I suspect that will continue. It's not that we can't do better I just think he is not dismayed by 3 yards and a cloud of dust like some people are in today's pinball football era.

The cognitive dissonance about the run game in contrast to the RB personnel is fascinating to watch.

And classic CIS.

i don't hate our simple run it up the gut runs. very small chance of a TFL or catching a holding call, which are drive killers that i don't see any reason to chance this year with how great our pass offense is. we were real good at it last year and i suspect we'll get better this year too once rivers and cooper are back and our new backs gain more experience navigating the tight spaces (there was one play in first half last game that i thought martinez could have had a nice run had he ran straight up the middle inside 84 but it looked like he tried to run outside the guard and got stuffed).

most of our issues against ball st in first half were cause of how they sold out to stop the run. first drive of second half we got a light box twice (trips wide the first time and 3 WR the second time split 1 & 2) and fletcher gashed them running behind mccoy's outside shoulder. i like what i've seen from mccoy and would wager he'll be fulltime starter going forward at that guard spot. get rivers back and run behind left side with cooper pulling that way too on occasion and i think we'll do well when we venture outside the guards.

i really like how dawson called the first drive of second half:
1. rpo that cam prolly should have handed off to fletch,
2. ran into the light box set up by trips wide, and
3. when box got heavy on 3rd and four we hit brown over the middle for the conversion when he sat down nicely in the open space.
4. next play box was light again and we gashed them when 8/70/78 all did a great job blocking on the left side.
5. then we did the thing that everyone hates - created a heavy box by bringing x in motion to block, but that play temporarily got offtrack cause 8 and cristobal missed their blocks (not cause of the guy X brought into the box) but fletch was possessed at that point and broke tackles for a nice gain
6. finished it with a beauty going empty sending martinez opposite the play side and george walked into end zone on screen
more manipulation of space with formations and motion like that drive would be nice going forward.

arroyo has missed a ton of blocks too. hopefully he improves/gets more consistent as he's such a threat in the passing game you can't take him off the field. riley williams is our best blocking TE when he lines up inline, i dunno if at his size he can do the motion blocks that we're asking arroyo to do but might be worth a shot to give him some reps in that role too. since coach doesn't give a **** about deception might as well run more 2TE sets with riley in there when we're gonna run (i still have hopes that sometime this decade we will do play fake out of heavy 2/3 TE set and hit a TE wide open 20 yards down the field lol)

i believe we're gonna sprinkle in some read option looks with cam too, making the defense account for him on run plays will help. i liked those two back looks we showed versus ball st too (think it was lyle and cjj in first half) flaring cjj out of those formations should lighten up the box if we choose to run.
If I wanted to do that much reading I would open the conference realignment thread.
