Easily in the Top 5 of my Most Important Players for a successful 2023.

In the college game, having a truly elite back is an absolute difference maker. Especially when you're playing for Mario Cristobal and Alex Mirabal, because you know there are going to be some talented linemen in front of you. If Chaney can stay healthy and truly flash, it will make a massive difference for us.

My Top 5 as it stands today:

1. Tyler Van Dyke -- Don't think this one needs much explanation, but his performance this year not only dictates the 2023 season but also has a huge ripple effect on future offensive recruiting. Saying it's imperative that he play very well is the biggest understatement imaginable.

2. Leonard Taylor -- I'm not overly concerned with the offensive line. I am much more concerned with the defensive line. You cannot be average on either front and be a good football team, it just doesn't work that way. So to have the DL achieve what's needed to make this a legit team, 56 has to be the kid we recruited him to be. Truly the 2nd biggest piece on the entire team, IMO. If he approaches Gerald Willis territory, and he has the talent to do so, it is going to make the entire unit so much better. If he still only flashes, shows inconsistency, and can't stay on the field, this goes from a potentially good unit to look-out real quick.

3. Xavier Restrepo -- Probably a controversial pick, as we all know we need an couple outside WRs to emerge, but the full health and Year 3 jump we should get from this kid will put a jolt into the offense. I know he won't play the role that Tank Dell played in Dawson's former life, but our OC has shown he is willing to get his best playmaker in this room the football. X is that, until proven otherwise. We know the connection he has with TVD. We know the talent he has. And we know what kind of leader he is....but it truly makes a difference when your biggest alpha leader is also the one making the most plays on Saturday. It just elevates everyone else and players rally around a dude who will put his money where his mouth is. I expect Braxton Berrios in 2017 at a minimum. 55 catches, 679 yards, 9 TDs and someone who consistently moves the chains on money downs.

4. James Williams -- I have been very critical of this kid, and honestly how can you not be at this point? But if he's truly going to play Safety, it's time to be the player you are supposed to be. I know Kam is going to be a superstar. And honestly I feel that a true outside corner emerging is more important for the defense to be successful than James being the dude we thought we were getting when we signed a Top 10 talent in America. But since I don't have massive confidence in that happening, if we can have Kam on one side and a kid on the other (and in the box) who can even approach the same talent level, it makes the job of the other kids in the secondary that much easier. No, he's not going to mask everything. If we press someone on the outside and the dude MTSU's us and makes the corner look like DJ Ivey in cement cleats, we're not going to be very good no matter what. But having 2 truly elite talents on the back-end and giving Guidry the flexibility to move them around the field and have the opposing offense account for both kids at all times, it will ease so much pressure on the corners, who we know will be a work in progress, to be nice. James...it's time. At a minimum, even if you don't ever reach a level of production expected of a consensus 5-star DB, tacking someone occasionally would be a nice consolation.

5. Don Chaney -- It's 2023. You have to score points to win football games. To me, the next most important piece to that is a stud back. Rooster is gone. Thad is gone, and likely eating somewhere. Citizen looked like a gem, but will be coming off an ACL when camp rolls around, and the college kids rarely seem to overcome those injuries as quickly as we see the pros do (for good reason). So I'm not counting on him early in the year, if much at all. That leaves #2 as that between the tackles banger who should get a TON of opportunity as an early down back, and this is coming from the President of the Henry Parrish Fan Club. I absolutely LOVE 21....but he shouldn't be getting 20 touches a night on early downs, downhill between the tackles, IMO. Chaney fits that mold much better. Also, I put him on this list because we NEED him to take reps, like he literally has to, hence his inclusion on a most important player list. If he no-shows again due to injury, and leaves the entire load just on Parrish with 2 true freshmen and a redshirt Fr. coming off an ACL, we are going to be in deep ****. It's imperative that Chaney give us that 1-2 punch we're going to need.
Believe you NEED to add Jacurri Brown to this. Needs live fire reps to help his growth. If TVD is dinged up even for 1 game we need JB ready and full of confidence to take over. OL depth and DT depth also need to be addressed in the portal.

Jacurri Brown is unequivocally not one of the 5 most important players for a successful 2023 season, although I do agree his development will impact future years. But we need TVD to be healthy for 12+ games and Brown to learn and improve. He should have zero bearing on how well we do on the field in 2023.

You need to be prepared ... your statement says it all.

So just last year not every other year before that? What took u so long I wish I could have believed for that **** long. Maybe I would be in better moods.
Considering the amount of resources that were pumped into the program, I wasn’t expecting the worst season of the last 40 years. I expected mediocre seasons with Golden and Manny. So when they **** the bed I wasn’t surprised.

I didn’t expect a CFP appearance but I did not ever expect 5-7, with amount of on and off the field issues Mario had. Makes me very pessimistic about this program ever fully escaping this level of futility no matter what the school does.

I thought 4-6 losses didn't think 7 but when your head is at 4-6 it's possible. I thought Mario was a roster coach hire not a genius on the books. I preferred the recruiter though cause I want championships or contention eventually. I didn't think our roster was capable at that point cause it was getting worse under MD. I do doubt at times but then I see what's coming in and that's a start. UM always been at ita best when it got the best, problem is their is more comp around the country to get the best.

I’ve been in favor of Mario being HC since Golden got fired. I just blindly thought he’d fix the organizational issues that have plagued this program for so long. Maybe I should’ve taken last year as a year 0 approach as opposed to year 1.

I’d love to be wrong and Mario gets this truly rolling again. But I’m not going to believe it happens until I actually watch it unfold.

The problem we had as proven from NFL drafts prior is talent acquisition. I wasn't on board with Mario till I researched his recruiting background. Then and only then was I on board cause we haven't had a truly elite recruiter since *****. On CIS every HC we hire is an elite recruiter which was cap. I never understood why people thought we had great recruiters they were awful. I don't think we do well this year I think we take a step the following year.....assuming this next class is top 5 type. I'm just going to be happy to finally see real big time talent in the trenches in bulk (pause)

We always have one or two guys now we have a stable of high level talent (in one **** class) They are all young asf though so I'm not expecting us to be world beaters. Exciting though to see guys who are future first round types on our roster again.

Good list, we also really, really need a CB1 to step up/portal to lock down his man/island to take pressure off the more mid guys on the other side. Hopefully our pass rush is big this year which will help the DB's too.

That's what a lot of people seem to miss. Even in our darkest years (last year being perhaps the worst talent wise), we've had talent on the team. But the roster is so thin with talent and full of holes that we never get the most out of those guys. To win consistently and confidently, you need to have 22 quality players (+K and P), with another 22 as 1a guys who rotate in or can take a starting role if someone goes down.

The other 40 or so kids are your first and second years who aren't ready to take meaningful snaps but are high potential and still developing. Most should be getting significant minutes on STs as well as subbing in.

We shouldn't have more than 10 projects on roster at any time, and certainly shouldn't keep JAGs on roster once we see guys missing their development and performance targets.

^^^ this takes 3-4 years to set up. The portal can get us there more quickly if the right kids enter and we can grab them. But that's far from a guarantee. Regardless of whether it's 2 or 4 years, I personally believe Mario WILL get us there.

That it wasn't that good. The defense has a ton of guys out and the OL isn't exactly dominating against the backups. The WRs are not consistent catching the ball. Ect... Basically the same thing that was on the field last year
Also said Jaccuri was the best QB on the field. Hopefully it was just a bad day for the offense.

@DMoney how is graves doing? I know he still is young like 18 or 19 but haven’t heard much about him

He’s had a tough spring.

He got an opportunity to get 1st snaps and let the opportunity slip away. I locked in on him a bit when I was there and he was struggling with his technique too often. He was an athlete first, so I think a longer transition to DB should’ve been expected.

I’m mentally preparing myself for the same thing to happen to Stafford when he shows up.

To be blunt, corner coaching at Miami sucks. It’s sucked since the Crime Dog left.

Rumph coached them just fine. He had Corn Elder, Adrian Colbert, Mike Jackson, Malik Young, etc. all balling. The should just move him back on-field that way they're at least being coached. We're still not recruiting.

Recruiting combined with coaching - he did suck though because his recruiting was so bad. Still hasn't changed though so probably wasn't even him

I actually thought rumph did a decent job coaching them up. Now recruiting on the other hand…
