D’Eriq King

I love King. Great character guy and playmaker. He may have given us a better chance in those ACC losses playing that wide-open style.

But in the real games against the big-boy teams, I’m taking Beck and it’s not even close. He is the bigger player and much more complete as a passer. King was more limited in what he could do.

I don’t see it as a hot take at all. Beck over King would be the overwhelming majority pick if we asked outside the board. Beck beat nine Top 10 teams and just got drafted third round.
I would probably pick beck also lol, and the point of King for ACC games but not the big dawg games I thought was a good one.. but it was more towards the disrespect.. Nowadays it seems in general people have to disrespect a player to uplift another, to me that all comes from espn rings only matter and lebron sucks for 24/7 10 years running.. To me that spawns the take of Beck being better than Ward because he made playoffs, that I used to hear on podcast, :ibis-roflmao-sm3:

Agree totally, although I thought they were respectful to King.

The biggest thing King brought us was the intangibles. We had the worst character quarterbacks in the country for a decade plus. Never seen so many suspensions and arrests at that position.

Is it fair to say that King and Beck kind of fit the teams they were on?

The 2020 team needed King to put on the Superman cape to even get to 8 wins, that NC State game was probably the best game I saw a canes QB play until cam ward showed up

The 2025 team needed Beck’s efficiency in those games vs Ohio state and Ole Miss, for all his shortcomings he was a killer on third downs in those two games

I think in a vacuum I’d probably lean Beck? But it’s pretty close

King just in a long list of Canes that deserved better

I like Beck and appreciate what he did here but it would have been great to see King with the OL we had last year. He was so dynamic. I feel like we would have had a lot of blowouts last year instead of our offense sputtering at times

The big games…I guess we will never know

IMO it’s not an apples to apples comparison. king never had a team with the talent Beck had.

I’m not saying Beck was not a good QB because he was.

I just see King as better QB. Much more dynamic and had a better deep ball.

Rhett ran the perfect offense for king… I don’t think king would be as big time in this Dawson offense where accuracy is legit #1 trait needed…

I’ll always love kings time here he was a stud who led an exciting offense and wouldn’t be mad if he was brought back in some kinda
What I love about Dawson is his ability to adapt to his QB. The Offense for TVD, Ward, and Beck all looked different.

I do agree with your point regarding accuracy. I honestly can’t remember if accuracy was an issue with King, but it’s hard to be accurate while consistently running for your life. Our OLine was pretty bad. With that said, at 5’9, King throwing above our behemoth of an OLine may have been an issue.

One the greatest single game performances in Cane history.

5TD's & 530yds total, BY HIMSELF.

His surrounding cast for that game:

Mike Harley
Mark Pope
Dee Wiggins
Will Mallory
Cam'Ron Harris/Davis

Only one player from that group got drafted, Will Mallory in the 5th round.

Not to mention, it was one of the worst Defensive performances by the Canes in recent history. The Secondary was getting absolutely ABUSED by NC ST's WR's.

So he had no help this game. Wasn't carried by a bunch of elite NFL players on Offense or Defense, he just went out & won the game...

BY HIMSELF.

Jesus Christ the only ones worth a **** on that team were King, Phillips, Jordan when he wasn’t hurt, Roche, Borregales, and Hedley.

This. I’ve said before that that team would’ve been .500 at best without King.

it’s beck with his bum ucl by a mile. It gets debatable with what offense you’re running. I’m taking beck in the Dawson offense.

King’s running would’ve opened up the running game even more against most teams, but I remember how ordinary his athleticism looked against Clemson (other than one run) and Bama (granted it was peak bama and he was coming off an acl). Think it’s really hard to win against the best teams with a limited passer who is undersized and not track star speed.

I think there is already some revisionist history happening on Beck though. Dude was a winner, but let’s not act like he did not limit the offense himself. I was just watching the ole miss game and at one point late in the 4th we still hadn’t completed a pass beyond the line of scrimmage the entire second half.
