Cross one off the list - Butch to retire

Congrats to Butch. Im glad he was able to finish out his career in South Florida. UM will forever owe him a debt of gratitude for what he did in guiding this team and program through the dark days of NCAA probation. He left our program in a better place than any coach has ever left a program in the history of NCAA football.

He built UM into a powerhouse...twice, and then dealt a cruel deathblow on the OB site. If UM cared about football, they would have fired Manny Dias on that miserable night and made him drive himself home after his car got blocked in a non "no-blockie" parking space. I will always respect what Butch did for UM.

Butch could have stayed as long as Paul Dee was the AD. Paul loved him until the end. Butch would have gotten a ring in 2001. He likely would have won in 2002 also. No Coker years, no Randy years, no Golden......................
No Paul Dee did not Love him till the end....

Ok, in all seriousness, why would FIU want to downgrade coaches by hiring Manny?
Because he understands Miami culture and he invented the turnover chain. Also, he understands how the transfer portal works. The guy can recruit! Just think about new catchphrases like "#TheNewFloridaInternational"

Butch has been "off the list" since he left Miami in January 2001—leaving the BoT butt-hurt in *how* he chose to leave ... opposed to blaming themselves and Paul Dee for not getting the contract extension done in late 2000, opening the door for an NFL departures.

Miami should've fired Coker after the 2005 Peach Bowl debacle—instead of forcing him to put Solly, Kehoe, Hargreaves and Werner to save his own ***. Punt then and there after 4-3 and bring back Butch.

Nope.

Lame duck, doomed-to-fail 2006 season with that retread Olson back as OC / Berry as QB coach (UM saddled Coker with Olson; Coker wanted Berry)—and by November, when the season was barreling towards a four-game losing streak and 7-6 run, North Carolina snatched up Butch and made him their guy—while UM cheaped-out and landed on Shannon.

Butch could've been the guy post-Golden, too—but Richt was available to they went the safe route there—instead of bringing Davis back.

Literally could've had the architect of the dynasty back in the mix FIVE YEARS after he left.

Now it's 20 years later and Miami football is still in purgatory.

Pathetic.

And Butch should be thankful for Miami, for using them as a boost to go to the NFL

Butch earned every dime and job opportunity he got. We were all upset when he left, only because we knew what he had built. You can't say we made him, he made us AGAIN in my opinion. People forget how bad it was. Lose that many scholarships yet create the greatness he did.

Rumor has it that Butch will be moving to Fort Myers and getting a recently-retired roommate who is also independently wealthy. They will be staking out all the best sandwich joints in Lee County and fishing 5 days per week, while swapping old war stories...

SWFLButch!
