Cristobal from football scoop...

Does anybody remember when Gruden was coming to the U? It was a done deal. Contract signed. Players notified.

Then we got Folden.

I remember.

To be fair, in 2010 (when I still had connections at the UM offices), the school was in serious negotiations with Gruden. They had agreed to terms on salary. Then he and his agent rolled out a new list of terms including a $1M+ salary for his brother to be OC (he was stuck in the Arena league at the time) and access to a private jet for any/all travel - even non-job related travel. The list was a shock to UM officials and basically ended the negotiation.

Many on campus still believe Gruden had no interest in coaching again and was playing UM to lock in a long term deal with ESPN/ABC, which in hindsight appears to have worked. I still have the text from my undergrad buddy who was supporting the AD office at the time saying "99% official!" followed a few hours later by "sh*t..."

You call these cats to see if they are interested all they can say is NO, and interview whoever is:

Chip Kelly
Brian Kelly
Bobby Petrino
Tom Herman
Dino Babers
Justin Fuente
Butch Davis
Sonny Dykes
Hue Jackson
Ron Chudzinski
Jeff Brohm

Here's the line in this garbage where anyone sensible should dismiss it as having wasted your time for having even read to this point:

"Our source was unable to say whether Cristobal is alone at the top of the list or not...".

Butch and Cristobal weRe always safe choices. I would have preferred a "young" up and comer, but I'm not opposed to Cristobal or butch. Coaches in the area like those two and that helps in recruiting. They both need to bring the right coordinators with them though. Assuming one of them is hired.

Sources tell FootballScoop that Alabama offensive line coach Mario Cristobal is “at the top of the list” for Miami and that discussions have taken place between representatives on each side.

Our source was unable to say whether Cristobal is alone at the top of the list or not but it is clear there is real interest from The U on this one, and that aligns with what local high school coaches think would be a good hire for Miami. 247 sports asked a number of local high school coaches who they felt Miami should hire and there was strong support for Cristobal.

This time, it sounds like Miami is on the right trail.

Formerly the head coach at FIU, Cristobal would bring local relationships back onto campus and is widely seen as someone who could resurrect that confidence that once shined brightly in south Florida.

As we wrote at the time of Al Golden’s departure:

“Its hard to imagine that Mario Cristobal doesn’t get a great look at it. Miami isn’t a learn as you go type of job. The U needs a leader. We suspect the next head coach will be a current or former head coach with significant ties to the area. The next head coach needs not only to recruit locally; but has to understand the local “politics.” The U doesn’t have unlimited financial resources; but if the next head coach can get things rolling, the kindle is ready to burn. Strike a match and bring the good times back to the U!”

Sources in the profession tell us coaches have been letting Cristobal know that if he gets the job, they want in on his staff.

I'm sure Miami has talked to multiple coaches already so that can be said about others as well. I'm going to wait for canesinsight to report on coaching situations because they usually are the first to know out of the reporters

I'm sure every coach in the ACC is saying this is the best hire for Miami...Just licking their chops for another five years in the dumpster...

Give me an X's and O's guy, or at least a strong evaluator of talent and development in players and coaches. If you can't meet the former, then get the latter. Butch is the very best at the latter. We could mention bringing in Mario with the right staff. He wants to retain Coley and bring Mel Tucker in as DC (who may, just may, be worse than Dorito as a DC). GTFO with Cristobal as the new coach. I refuse to buy it given that the BOT is willing to spend $4 mil on the new head coach.

What does Mario give us that other possible candidates do not?

The hire doesnt make sense. Want a Miami guy? Hire Butch. Younger coach? Hire Herman.

Christobal has no x factor ability that I know of. None. Wont excite the fanbase. Wont excite recruits. Question his gameday ability. What has he PROVED?

If hes in the discussion, fine. But even the BOT has to know there are better options out there. Even excluding Butch.

it will excite recruits and coaches in SoFla

he was recruiter of the year last year and everyone down there loves him..I am not advocating for him as coach but that much is clear for SoFla
