I definitely understand that position and agree with it. However, there are some people that aren't going to be rehabilitated and just letting them off easy is going to embolden them to keep committing crimes (like in NYC from the NY Post article).I have zero problems being tough on crime. I do have problems with the stigma of a record staying with you for life and I think if a person commits a crime there should be resources available to show them a path away from recidivism.
Locally there was a person that got arrested 3 times for breaking into businesses and burglarizing them (small businesses too that I'm sure he took thousands of dollars in goods). He was let out 3 times and then rearrested shortly after for doing the same exact thing before they FINALLY charged him with a felony and no bail. Incredible that the system is setup to allow that to happen.
But I agree that some people just make 1 bad decision and it can stick with you for the rest of your life. Those aren't the people I'm talking about though. But I do agree, for those 1-off people that just make a bad decision or have a bad day (and don't commit a heinous crime of course)... should be able to get back on their feet. ****, we are all human... I did stupid things when I was younger!
