Miami-Dade County Commissioners are close to releasing a plan to extend a MetroMover loop from Government Center in the heart of Downtown Miami to a potential shared stadium for UM/MLS at the Former Orange Bowl site. The mover would allow MLS Miami fans to board the train from their favorite soccer bars in Downtown before the game and allow UM students the ability to board and attend games from stations near their college campus. These plans are in the preliminary phases but have huge support from the community and Miami-Dade County Commission – according to the plans creator – Commissioner Bruno Barreiro.

Though the plans are in preliminary phases, we know it would include a light rail loop from Government Center in Downtown Miami. The loop would go directly west from Government Center then turn north to dock between Marlins Stadium and the UM/MLS shared stadium. Loops have recently been built in Downtown to the Omni area and Brickell that have been very successful.

MLS and UM are currently ironing out the details for a plan to build a 40,000-seat stadium on the former Orange Bowl site. UM officials including Donna Shalala met with David Beckham, Marcelo Claure, Simon Fuller and MLS Commissioner Don Garber two weeks ago to discuss the partnership. The negotiations went well and plans have since moved forward. We are expecting to hear plans for a stadium and MetroMover in the next couple weeks.

At minimum a 50,000 seat capacity with foundations in place to expand rapidly, because when the Canes get rid of Golden, attendance will explode.

Only for FSU, Clemson, and thos big Non-Conference games. Every other game, 40k seats is enough. If it only seats 40k, but they are close to the field, I'd be happy.

I don't understand the value of a stadium that isn't big enough to host our biggest/most important/toughest home games.

Can someone explain that for me?

At this point I'll do just about anything to get out of that God forsaken piece of dog**** known as Dolphin Stadium.

For the record...I'd bet all the games will be played at the new site. Let's see how this plays out before we start jumping to conclusions.

The simple fact this is even a possibility is exciting...finally some good news for this program.

Damm first sun life is to big now the new stadium is to small you guys are never happy with anything ill say build a 40k seat stadium with room to exspand and were good play the big games at sunlife.

Not being big enough for 1 game < being way too big for 5 games. In an ideal world we'd be able to fill SLS for most games if we had a decent team. Sad fact is that even when we were throwing out the best team in the history of college football that there were plentyyyyyy of good seats still available at the OB for nooners against Pitt or Rutgers.

Donna's history makes it a fools game to support anything she is behind. Her hand in it is enough be oppose it. One way or another she is trying to ***** the football program one more time.

Should be 45k minimum with ability to expand to 55k. 40k just seems really small especially if we plan on playing big games there which I assume we don't. But it's a start and better than the current situation.

Then what good is "home field advantage" if you can't use it against your biggest rival? It seems as backwards as all the football related decisions that have been made since 2002.

Maybe an open endzone like the OB where seats can be added. That way the MLS can keep the permanent seat count down and we can expand when necessary. I'm sure I am not the only idiot to think of this....

What's the total cost expected to be of the proposed stadium? I can only go off my experience from up in Minnesota where the gophers built a beautiful 52,000 seat stadium - however the student section rarely sells out. The upper deck of the student section is virtually empty for 11am games. The rest of the stadium is typically full though. It is a really nice place and huge jumbotron - I think it is the 3rd or 4th biggest screen in college football. Vikes have been playing there temporarily while the new Vikes stadium is being built. Sadly enough I stormed the field when the Gophers kicked Nebraska's *** 2 years ago.

Even if we do reach this agreement for the stadium I don't see us just getting out of the lease and I don't see UM wanting to pay to get out. I see something like we play at least one game at sunlife a year tbd on the opponent and then 2 games per year when we have FSU at home.

This would probably still include a little cash to leave full time as well.

Threads like this convince me there is no common sense or fiscal understanding among most posters on this board.

Im sure UM met with Ross in advance to meeting with Beckham...

a 40 to 45,000 Seat stadium is perfect and most ideal. Even in our most dominant times we attracted 30,000 to Rutgers and Temple....

Perfect Example:

November 3, 2001 12:00 PM vs Temple (UM #1 in the Country) A total of 31,128 showed up.

Ya I'm sure they did and they probably made some sort of arrangement of that kind. Ross makes $50 million per year through Miami football playing at Sun Life. It's not just that easy to let that go especially when you just made $450 million renovations.
