Corey Heatherman revisited..

66 yards rushing allowed last night and still the #1 rush defense in America. Pass coverage is a nightmare but guy isn't getting fired.

ND is going to attack us the very same way. Why wouldn’t they? They have all the same pieces with way better personnel. We can stand at the podium and preach “execution”’or the coaches can be accountable. Change up the fronts, make ND process some more and see what happens.

There’s no picture changing. What you see pre snap is what you see post snap. The DL has been very inconsistent but alot of the reason for lack of pass rush is everyone knows where they’re going pre snap. They rarely guess wrong. Things are very predictable. You rarely see patting of the ball by the qb , leaving the pocket early or choppy feet. Which tells me they’re trusting their eyes. They’re very decisive.

Film don’t lie.

Neither does the best edge duo we’ve ever had here. It’s the reason I was “down” on the defense all summer. Although I didn’t think it’d be this bad. But a lot of people don’t understand, if you can create constant pressure with 4, calling defense is literally easy. It just is. The secondary is awful but all of this is predicated on not being able to get pressure with 4. 5 and 99 are insanely strong and never get moved off their spots in the run game, but they don’t get a ton of pressure on the middle. And Lightfoot has been good, but the edge group is MILES worse than last year. How could they not be, the two we had last year were literally the best we’ve ever had.

The DL can’t generate enough pressure. He’s not really able to generate it in other ways. We can’t cover anyone with our nickels and backers. And we are poor tacklers. All that adds up to a mediocre defense. Teams know how to attack us and they have the time to do it.

I’m almost inclined to say let’s start playing some odd fronts and get more DBs on the field. If nothing other than getting different looks out there. Sacrifice something in the run game to help these kids cover. Again, yet another team who did **** in the run game, their backs had 21 carries for 68 yards. But it doesn’t matter much if you’re gonna let Billy Edwards get 10 yards every time he throws it.

28/34 for 341 yards is flat embarrassing. Thank god for our offense, I’d bet a QB with those numbers wins about 98% of their games. Give up something in the run game if you have to and just get on the edges. 10 yards a throw to that group is gross. Tight end and backs ate our lunch.
Crazy idea - what if we didn't start the worst Pass Defending linebacking tandem in the country for 90% of snaps..... lol

Wiley is already done here. They refused to play/develop any other LBs. The DB rotation is idk what is going on. Saw Damari Brown and Ryan Mack outside together so ******* often it was disgusting, but that wasn't all that relevant to this specific game since it was mostly LBs and Poyser+Dunnigan getting picked apart....
You think Wiley is done here?

Exactly correct. We’re letting teams who script heavily stay on script the entire game- FSU and UNC most notably. The cracks were these against Stanford, too. We aren’t forcing teams to process anything. Every team can play pitch and catch for 7 yards.

With this offense, there is very little risk to showing more on defense, virtually none actually. After we went up by 2 scores, UNC answered in 50 seconds. To the gallows with them.

Last season our pass rush win % was 40% (4th in the nation)
Going into tonight, we were at 38%.

After 8 games this season we have 24 sacks which will be in the top 10.

After 8 games last season we had 15.

And we are #1 vs the run this year after 8 games. I truly don’t think not having Bain and Mesidor is the issue through 8 games.

Not having kei is the biggest issue rn imo

Last night, on UNC last possession, we ran a man 2 and everyone knew it, especially their 5th yr QB. It was extremely basic

He needs to look in the mirror and realize soft zone for an entire game ain’t it

Flashback to Steelers' maddening defensive philosophy from around 2010 pretty much until Tomlin retired.

Allowing field goals: Good. Allowing touchdowns: Bad

Canes locked into bend but don't break mode and Petrino and Edwards responded by nickel-and-diming their way to the end zone five times

He gotta do better job of mixing it up. They were eating our zone blitzes up all night, too. We had ****** in powder blue, particularly 45, running scot free thru our secondary all night.

UNC had to play a flawless game to beat us. They almost did. Their game plan and execution deserves more praise than our defense deserves admonishing. That does not excuse our defense as they had several opportunities to end drives. We were bad on third and shorts. Our tackling was messy.

Ehhh forcing teams into quick game makes them one dimensional.

Last year you either got the ball out quick against Bain and Mesi or you got punished. That showed in the playoffs when you played equal comp/talent.

Right now we’re getting sacks only because opposing OCs don’t fear our ends getting home consistently enough to deviate from the desired script.

he is still a young DC at this level. he HAS to fix it tho. Marcelin has been playing more but I dont get why bonner isn't.
Also, something people dont talk about is how bad of a recruiter Guidry was. that put us back a bit.
This defense is not super talented, this year's incoming freshmen are needed.
It's not super talented, but it's pretty talented. Hetherman calls plays like we're a service academy. Soft zone all over the field, waiting for the opposition to make a mistake.

Evero in Charlotte just got fired for running a soft zone, Cover 3. The game has moved on, it's been worked out by OCs.

I don't hate the strategy. When you have your own explosive offense, take away their run and make them throw underneath and kick FGs. It does require being able to tackle though.
