Corey Heatherman revisited..

With manny we would get absolutely gashed on the ground. Don't understand this longing for a guy who got boat raced every single time we played a team with a good OL.
Yes - but we didn't have the personnel we do now and also we can have our cake and eat it too: a more aggressive, attacking defense that plays downhill and takes away all the easy reads while maintaining some gap integrity (unlike Manny). It isn't all or nothing, but we need to revamp our whole philosophy for the rest of they year or we will lose a couple of key games and not win the NC.

I have a feeling Corey is gonna get it right and this defense will play better starting next week.

My suggestion.. put Bryce at FS. His playmaking there is worth a lot more that whatever he brings as a nickel or corner. Let Dunnigan be the nickel. Take 1 and 9 off the field on 3rd downs and obvious passing situations. rotate 2 of Bonner, Pruitt, Wiley, marcelin at lb. Chill on the blitzes. Drop 7 rush 4 every time while mixing in man and zone. Still have exotic blitz packages and Use Lightfoot as a chess piece like last year. Let him rush from all over the place.

Either way, ND is gonna be a shootout and we got better guns.

he is still a young DC at this level. he HAS to fix it tho. Marcelin has been playing more but I dont get why bonner isn't.
Also, something people dont talk about is how bad of a recruiter Guidry was. that put us back a bit.
This defense is not super talented, this year's incoming freshmen are needed.

It's odd how predictable it all feels. It felt like he was an evil mastermind last season at when to blitz. I think Keionte Scott is a loss not talked enough about. His combo of elite coverage/blitzing at the nickel was almost as invaluable as Bain's dominance. There aren't many players like Scott in all of CFB.

he makes mistakes but people ignore it because he's a freshmen.
But for some reason to Heatherman that is acceptable (and my point isn't actually that we shouldn't be willing to take it with Dunnigan given the current DB situation), yet the position he coaches and "develops" can't possibly ever have young talented players play and potentially struggle.

Heatherman is taking a shotgun and shooting himself right in his ******* face because he doesn't want to play Wiley, Pruitt, or Bonner. Period. This has been the case since last yrs LBs rotation. I said it'd be a problem we didn't get a portal LB... I said it would be the case as soon as it was coming out in practices Smith would be a starter.... How do you play Dunnigan, Day, Thornton, Mack, Damari, for ******* 30%-100% of snaps every ******* game where we accept their mistakes and hope that they learn from them.... but the young more talented LBs literally can't get a ******* snap....**When Linebacker play has been the worst performing unit on the defense for 2 ******* years now!!!** .... ffs man

He’s a smart coach. I think **** get us right but I’m with you 100%, we need all those incoming freshman on the defensive side. Donte Wright and Amir Sears playing in this secondary next year would be nice.

Last season our pass rush win % was 40% (4th in the nation)
Going into tonight, we were at 38%.

After 8 games this season we have 24 sacks which will be in the top 10.

After 8 games last season we had 15.

And we are #1 vs the run this year after 8 games. I truly don’t think not having Bain and Mesidor is the issue through 8 games.

Still doesn't pass the eye test.... quote all the stats you want.
That D we see out in the field the last couple of games is borderline atrocious..

this was a flashback of having cancer on our defense all over again....just do something different , freaking try at least

There are several problems with this defense, and the blame doesn't fall solely on Heatherman. The tackling has been awful. We swarm to the ball, but too often the first defender misses. We're also overly aggressive at times, which leads to bad angles and lost leverage. One quick sidestep by the ball carrier, and our guys are left grabbing air. We also give receivers far too much cushion, making it easy pitch and catch for opposing quarterbacks. Is that because we're missing our top cover corner? I don't think so. O'Connor could start for most D1 programs, and Lucas was one of the top freshman corners in the country a few seasons ago. Will things improve when OJ and Antoine return? Maybe, but I don't know. What I do know is that these issues go beyond Heatherman.
tackleing wasn't there problem my boy, them catching the ball time after time again with nobody within 8 yards of the wr is the problem

I agree but we are looking at the wrong place if we are looking at the defensive line

We are getting killed underneath with the screens and Quick passing game. Looked like a bend don’t break defense that broke every time they got into the Redzone smh
