You can't teach the speed off Sam Shields.. Any Darrel Green comparisons?
DVD was fast, and that didn't get him nowhere. Sam learned to play CB, and he learned it well.

Shields was a non factor here. Was always in Shannon's dog house and was not drafted. Why are we crowning Shannon again?
McGriff and Pannunzio deserve more credit for convincing Randy to do that with Shields and Graham respectively.Crown Randy Shannon.
Two things randy did very well
Sam shields to cornerback his senior year
And
Jimmy graham to TE
Radio ain't the brightest guy but he knows a little something

I didn't realize McGriff had done so well after leaving here. Coached for the Saints and is now the DC for Vandy.

He turned down the Vandy job and is staying in New Orleans.
If we were ever in the market for a defensive coordinator, McGriff would be a tremendous choice. He is a recruiting monster who led Vanderbilt and Ole Miss to their best classes ever. Vanderbilt's DBs were also among the best in the nation during his tenure.
He's been learning under Rob Ryan, and his vision for Miami is in line with what most of the fans want. He wants aggressive players, doesn't have inflexible rules about size (he wanted to offer Jayron Hosley and Ricardo Allen, for example) and believes that Miami's system should be simplified to accentuate the athletes.
And yes, it was McGriff who pushed for Shields to move to corner for years. He did the same for Lee Chambers.
McGriff wanted him to play DB in 2008. Randy relented. In the latter half of 2008 DMoney and CMar both said he was already beginning to practice with the DB's and became one of the gunners on punt coverage. Randy was CEO then so sure it was his final call, but it was McGriff who pushed for it. And Shields was routinely picked on the entire 2009 season, not just Oklahoma. FSU did it in the opener constantly, and it continued throughout the season. He got better, but his man was always targeted. He was clearly the weakest of the three that season. What!? Okay it's for you to disagree despite me providing a few actual instances that the kid contributed here during his career. Now you want to discredit Randy for moving him to corner when the kid and his father said out of their own mouths that he was the reason for the move? Come on man. They were trying to persuade him to make the switch since his sophomore year.
Crown Randy Shannon.
outside of Graham, Larry Coker recruited those guys. Crown Coker?

If Sam had gone to LSU he would have been a more legendary DB than Patrick Peterson and Honey Badger combined at that school.

If you told me in 2009 that Brandon Harris and Demarcus VanDyke would be non-factors as pros, and that Sam Shields would be a pro-bowler, I'd slap you in the face.
I wouldn't. In 2009 I was wishing he had one more year because he was really good for playing that position for 6 months. He only had 1 bad game and that was against Oky where Broykes was doing him in. Outside of that he was a beast. People make it seem as if he was a bust. He made a number of plays. He just wasn't consistent as a wide receiver. He led our comeback against UVA in 08 and made countless plays against Wake in 09 to lead us to a comeback victory. He made plays here. He just converted to corner late.

Some people still can't give Randy any credit. Kind of sad.
