Congrats to Sam Shields

Shields was a non factor here. Was always in Shannon's dog house and was not drafted. Why are we crowning Shannon again?

As Shields matured, he made his mark as an excellent special teams player his junior year and he was a good corner his senior season.

Crown Randy Shannon.

Two things randy did very well

Sam shields to cornerback his senior year

And

Jimmy graham to TE

Radio ain't the brightest guy but he knows a little something
McGriff and Pannunzio deserve more credit for convincing Randy to do that with Shields and Graham respectively.

What!? Okay it's for you to disagree despite me providing a few actual instances that the kid contributed here during his career. Now you want to discredit Randy for moving him to corner when the kid and his father said out of their own mouths that he was the reason for the move? Come on man. They were trying to persuade him to make the switch since his sophomore year.

No he wasn't. He made plays just wasn't consistent. He eventually fell out the wideout rotation because he couldn't catch but he still contributed. He was our main reason for coming back on Wake Forest in 09. Kid made several key tackles, recovered a key fumble and force a key fumble leading to our comeback. Some of you act like he was a scrub. If anything the staff had more faith in his abilities than he did. They always found away to utilize his talents until he eventually realized his potential. In Sam Shields lone season at corner, he has been better than anything we had in the past 4 years. He didn't get any picks but outside of the Oky game he played well.

I didn't realize McGriff had done so well after leaving here. Coached for the Saints and is now the DC for Vandy.

He turned down the Vandy job and is staying in New Orleans.

If we were ever in the market for a defensive coordinator, McGriff would be a tremendous choice. He is a recruiting monster who led Vanderbilt and Ole Miss to their best classes ever. Vanderbilt's DBs were also among the best in the nation during his tenure.

He's been learning under Rob Ryan, and his vision for Miami is in line with what most of the fans want. He wants aggressive players, doesn't have inflexible rules about size (he wanted to offer Jayron Hosley and Ricardo Allen, for example) and believes that Miami's system should be simplified to accentuate the athletes.

And yes, it was McGriff who pushed for Shields to move to corner for years. He did the same for Lee Chambers.

Cool. I appreciate the back stories.
I always felt he was an underappreciated DB coach here.

Shields never would have allowed that blooper 2 point conversion to succeed. He was the second closest defender but couldn't get there. You could see how animated and frustrated he was after Clinton-Dix froze and did nothing.

Of all the surging Canes in the pros, Shields surprises me the most. That home game against Oklahoma was so scary I didn't even want to look in that direction. Don't we have a defensive tackle we can shift out there instead?

Then he was a sticky glue fingered playmaker almost immediately with the Packers. Frankly, that team has underachieved in recent years, following the one Super Bowl win, given all their strengths in key areas like quarterback and secondary.

Was Shields even out there on that onside kick? I don't know why he wouldn't be. For one thing, you need aggressive types out there, not merely hands types. Everybody criticizes the backup tight end for botching the recovery, when he was supposed to block. Check out Jordy Nelson behind him. Nelson blew it also. Once it's obvious the tight end is going for the ball and not leaving it to fall to Nelson, there's only one Seahawk threatening to recover the bobble. Nelson could have sensed it and taken that Seattle guy out of the play. A defensive type like Shields might have done that. Instead, Nelson pathetically allowed the rebound catch and then worthlessly tackled the Seahawk instead of trying to rip the ball away.

McGriff wanted him to play DB in 2008. Randy relented. In the latter half of 2008 DMoney and CMar both said he was already beginning to practice with the DB's and became one of the gunners on punt coverage. Randy was CEO then so sure it was his final call, but it was McGriff who pushed for it. And Shields was routinely picked on the entire 2009 season, not just Oklahoma. FSU did it in the opener constantly, and it continued throughout the season. He got better, but his man was always targeted. He was clearly the weakest of the three that season.

Some people still can't give Randy any credit. Kind of sad.

If Sam had gone to LSU he would have been a more legendary DB than Patrick Peterson and Honey Badger combined at that school.

Sadly had Patrick Johnson came to The U he'd be just another JAG getting drafted in the 6th round and then ballin out in the pro's.

Come on man he wasn't routinely picked on. You just name 2 of the first 4 games for a guy who has been on the job for 6 months. After OK he balled out. Name another game he was picked on throughout the year. The kid made plays.

You don't want to get RS credit but it was his reason.

If you told me in 2009 that Brandon Harris and Demarcus VanDyke would be non-factors as pros, and that Sam Shields would be a pro-bowler, I'd slap you in the face.

I wouldn't. In 2009 I was wishing he had one more year because he was really good for playing that position for 6 months. He only had 1 bad game and that was against Oky where Broykes was doing him in. Outside of that he was a beast. People make it seem as if he was a bust. He made a number of plays. He just wasn't consistent as a wide receiver. He led our comeback against UVA in 08 and made countless plays against Wake in 09 to lead us to a comeback victory. He made plays here. He just converted to corner late.

Agree with this. Shields was actually a good player considering the amount of time he had put into the position at the time and his struggles with film studies.

I always thought brandon Harris had some good ball skills but his long legged running style hurt him prolly from running to many 800's.

some people think just cuz shannon failed overall that anything negative can be said and it's automatically true.
