We can leave whenever we want. But, we wouldn't want to leave without having something better lined up. A B1G invite would do it, an agreement with Amazon that pays off what we owe and pays close to B1G/SEC money would do it (assuming they find a good home for the rest of the sports), etc. 2030 is just the time when the price of leaving drops and when new tv contracts are being negotiated. My best guess is any announcements for expansion come around 2028 so the conferences can encourage higher bids for their tv contracts with new members. So is 2030 the earliest they can leave? Or if the bill does not pass can they get out earlier?
I think that one thing that a lot of people are overlooking in going independent (and Echevarria called this out in the Yahoo article) is the scheduling of the non-football sports. Ideally if Miami went independent in football, they could keep the rest of their sports in the ACC (similar to ND), but I don't know if the ACC would go for that (I wouldn't if I was them).
Maybe... but it is also the only leverage they likely have to make it more painful for those teams to leave. The ACC may have no choice if we are leaving with others (Clemson, FSU, UVA, UNC).
if Miami and a handful of other schools decide to go independent, will there even be an ACC anymore?
Good question. Maybe in non-football sports only.

What happens
I can’t see ACC letting other sports stay
Or bring with you, Fox doesn't exactly have the strongest streaming presence.FWIW, I highly doubt the current form of the Protect College Sports Act passes.
Still think we end up in the Big Ten. Makes too much sense for both parties, and Amazon is a nice bargaining chip to have at your side.
I feel like we've been calling this out as the obvious move in this thread for the better part of a decade. Long live the Conch Republic Conference!
If ND gets a scheduling agreement with the B1G and SEC then they can stay independent. If he Protect the College Sports Act stays at 20 teams vice increasing to 22, it won’t matter to Miami if Notre Dame stays independent. The ND AD has reportedly been meeting along with Sankey and Pettiti discussing the "scheduling agreement". ND will be PART OF IT. They bring eyeballs and the P2 are aware of it. They aren't being left out.
