Reminds me of Wetzel's post from yesterday.

An Independent with a strong brand would actually be well positioned in the 24-team format.
I agree with one catch. Is the 24-team playoff big enough for 2 big independent brands? I worry that scheduling will be difficult. Look at ND and all the s#*t they get for their cupcake schedules year in and year out. B10 and SEC are already talking about preferred scheduling

The big challenge is getting a media deal that pays more than the ACC as an independent. Might take a real aggressive move such as 6 or more ACC programs going independent as a group. There IS a "one sport" ACC withdrawal that was part of the ACC settlement with Clemson / FSU. 6 programs or more leaving IN ONE SPORT with the remaining sports staying in the ACC ... the withdrawal fee is $75M. So who picks up the media deal with the "rebel conference":

-Miami
-FSU
-UNC
-Clemson
-Va Tech
-Ga tech

They need to play 10 P4 games to be considered for the CFP. Reportedly the SEC / B10 will be announcing a scheduling agreement as soon as the 24 team CFP is announced as formally agreed to. The REBELS will need to get games with the B10, SEC and B12 as well as ND in order for it to work. Does FOX come after this "group" since they NEED marquis games to program?

Complicates things if SEC and Big Ten agree to that scheduling deal too. Who wants to add Miami or ND as an independent, to an already difficult and physically-demanding schedule?

Don’t get me wrong, Amazon as a backer would be great. But ideally, we want to be in the Big Ten.

If it was independent, the schedule would probably involve ND and FSU almost every year, and some variation of ACC/Big 12 teams + cupcakes.

Does it really matter if you win every game?
Not really but it does matter for recruits. They want to play in big games. Sure if SOMEHOW you get FSU, CLEMSON, UNC, Notre Dame, Texas Tech etc where every year that’s half your schedule fine you can endure that but you’re basically going against a P2 who can say well we are close with NIL and you get marquee games between the two major conferences that will make up 22 of the 24 spots in the playoff. Thats my fear.

Which is not ideal at all. Obviously better than what we have now, but still…

Problem is who are we scheduling? In this new era, it’s going to be hard to schedule marquee games.

Correct.

There is no workaround as ND is on the verge of finding out.

Not with the SEC and B1G further expanding while going to (at minimum) a 9-game conference schedule that will shrink non-conference scheduling opportunities.

Those P2 schools are not gonna turn around and say, "Hey Miami. Hey Notre Dame. I know y'all looking for some marquee games. We'd be glad to help y'all out!"

The B10 / SEC scheduling agreement + ND is "reportedly" the announcement that will come as soon as the 24 game CFP is formally announced. Apparently Sankey / Petiti and the ND AD have been meeting without ACC & B12 participation. So you're right ... getting games with the P2 is going to be more difficult. We would need at least 6 ACC members to form the REBEL INDY LEAGUE and schedule games with remaining ACC and B12 members ... and maybe get lucky for a B10 / SEC game or two. Chaos will rule for awhile then I believe the P2 will definitely expand and like it or not ... a semblance of a super league will be formed.

The ND AD has reportedly been meeting along with Sankey and Pettiti discussing the "scheduling agreement". ND will be PART OF IT. They bring eyeballs and the P2 are aware of it. They aren't being left out.
