With possibly the exceptions of Miami/Duke, it is an ideal cultural fit, and if you only take 2 privates, who cares, you've got 6 state schools.

You ABSOLUTELY lock down the SEC footprint forever. The Big 10 is almost completely shut out of the southeast.

Maybe they take Duke. Maybe USF. Who else is left in the southeast that fits the academic/athletic profile of the Big 10.

And the funny thing is, I believe that entire list would give an immediate "yes" to the SEC. Sure, maybe Duke would take 5 minutes to think about it. And maybe Miami would have its moment of doubt. But if we were in the southeast quadrant of the Big 10 WITHOUT ANY OF THOSE TEAMS I just listed...it would not be good.

The Big 10 needs half of those teams to make its southeastern play. The SEC could ace out the Big 10 if it goes to 24 teams WITH THOSE TEAMS.

But I think the SEC is going to play cutesy. Try to expand 2 teams at a time. UNC and UVa definitely. Maybe 2 more if push comes to shove.

Well if we did ideal, idk I'd take TTU above NCSt or Duke personally for SEC. Oklahoma St too potentially...

But assuming competitive between B1G and SEC

- B1G needs a Texas school imo. TTU idk if it's a fit though, A&M however could be.... Which would be interesting if like A&M ran from UT again and joined B1G, and TTU went to SEC..

- Miami is probably still a better B1G fit, so will probably end there. Notre Dame Id be shocked if they join a conference that isn't the B1G. The thought of them in SEC is weird.

- UNC and UVA seem destined to SEC. I still honestly don't particularly get the appeal of UVA over VTech if your trying to enter both states though. To me this actually leads to:

- easy W by B1G adding GTech and VTech tbh.

- NCSt imo unless a conference just bows down to the states threats pairing them together, is a B12 program.

- for B1G Duke makes sense if at a much lesser payout given they provide little value in football. Rutgers should be relegated to lesser payout too. And a couple other teams like Minnesota tbh...

- I would t be surprised if B1G went for a Arizona/Utah type... But imo not necessary. Cal or Stanford I can see the intrigue too...

I'd argue that FSU/Miami is the B1G's biggest single opportunity in the Southeast if it truly wants to be a national conference (still has to get into Texas somehow too) and getting both FSU/Miami together multiples the value of both teams...

I’m gonna laugh if A&M ditches the SEC for the BIG in the next round of re-alignment. Would get them away from Texas and they can be the Texas king in the BIG. Would be a terrific haul for the BIG with us tbh.
 
IDk, I could see UNC & UVA in the BIG. They fit better there academically and the other Olympic sports
Culturally, they fit better there, too

I know nothing. Just my perception from the outside

Money makes strange bedfellows, especially for the B1G (Rutgers, Maryland, and the West Coast schools).

Miami was given a two-day deadline to respond to the SEC's offer back then. As a private school, Foote would have to call what was (and still is) a Board of Trustees of nearly 100 people. And give them financials and whatnot. Which just wasn't practical back then.

The SEC then immediately pivoted to South Carolina, which was also a major independent at the time. And South Carolina quickly said yes.

It's amazing how much has changed since then. Rather than a rapid and rushed "take it or leave it" invitation, now the conferences spend a lot more time with backchannel discussions before making these bids go out for decisions.

While I do agree with you that the SEC governance has changed, and that we are unlikely to be vetoed by Florida and/or a Florida-led minority (as has happened before), I think the following options will happen before Miami gets a call from the SEC:

1. SEC decides to ride with "flagship" Gators.

2. SEC decides to blunt what the Big 10 is doing in Florida by taking F$U, but not UM.

I'd be fine with the SEC. My regular mentions of the Big 10 are not about a hardcore "preference for one over the other", it's just a reflection that I think we have no shot with the SEC.

I'd be shocked if the SEC didn't go all in on FSU. And obviously just in general, they'd be pretty dumb as **** to not target at least one of us/fsu in an ACC collapse. To me FSU should actually be their #1 target. I'd be really interested to see if that happens if it clears the path for us to play FSU+UF non-con, as they both eliminate their yearly non-con rivalry game. And unlike the SEC, the B1G is a bit more top heavy, so it probably wouldn't even totally be an overloaded schedule (especially if one of FSU/UF suck) for us. Then again, if we joined with like ND we could have like ND/PSU yearly or something as our in conference rivalry...

By far weirdest outcome would be us in SEC and FSU in B1G. I can't even imagine that happening tbh. But like if SEC did prioritize us and we picked them, I can't imagine B1G would just give up on the state of Florida.... Then again they don't seem to be doing much in Texas...

That's been what I've been thinking about as well. FSU seems to make perfect sense for the SEC. Geography, cultural fit, and a built in rivalry with UF already seem to make a ton of sense. I don't see how they would let the B1G walk in and take them with how hyper focused they are on protecting the regionality of the SEC. From the B1G perspective, it would make sense to grab us both to bring in two big names and a built in rivalry but FSU culturally doesn't really fit with the B1G so how hard are they going to push for them if they can already get their foot into the FL market with us?

I see this. It's why I think UNC and UVA are better fits in the BIG. They are academic snobs - big rivals in basketball, which is their main value, along with a number of other Olympic sports. I could even see Va Tech in the BIG. the real outlier would be NCST in many ways.
 


my take? if you see the senate schedule a floor vote on the legislation, and the expansion blocking provisions are still in there, the shot clock begins

I've been explaining this for years. Young Miami fans have been ignoring this for years, and are wrong to do so.

North Carolina and Virginia are the two stars left to re-assemble.

Ultimately, as I’ve said from the beginning, I think we end up in the B10. Better fit culturally for where we’re at.

Please explain cultural fit- what does that even mean? Seriously- “culture” is the most overused word in sports.

Right. Anything short of that is just a sports writer posting to get engagement to their social media profiles.

It seems like a lot of people forgot that a good number of boosters and powerful alumni from SEC and B1G programs help bankroll a lot of re-election campaigns for politicians in Congress. These people do not want to relinquish their autonomy over their football programs, and will apply pressure as needed to kill any legislation that threatens that.

This is not just an athletic decision. Faculty makeup, politics, academics, institutional mission, goals, alumni base, student body, all these factor in. SEC looking for traditional southern large state universities. Miami is an international and Northeast leaning small private institution. We have more in common with Minnesota and NW than Mississippi st and Arkansas.

Thanks for replying. Let’s hope Mario has some say in this- which if he does- it may be very little. From a purely sports perspective- we should all be pulling for the SEC. They are the best collegiate athletic conference- and by quite a bit. They may not win everything- but their athletic pedigree is unmatched by the BIG. And who in the holy **** wants to be associated with all those pompous institutions- from a historical perspective- Miami fans of yesterday wouldn’t ever want to be associated with the BIG. It’s like wanting Notre Dame to be successful. But I get it- Miami has become somewhat soft and liberal over the years.
