On a serious note, I wonder if ESPN will end up offering something to DII and DIII schools to help try to get this through. Maybe more exposure on the website, more games on ESPN+, etc.? They are going all in on ESPN Bet and have a good amount of negotiating power.

I doubt it

Think long term about the bill though. What's the big deal in getting this passed? Who cares if college athletes have to pause betting for 3-4 years? But what if betting companies can use those players as spokespeople to entice their fans to bet? And NFL fans already bet. What they want is the college student and younger now.

It's just so fitting that these two bills are up at the same time.

Let's block the first one, so the kids can't unionize, collectively bargain for their rights, and we can pretend that college sports isn't actually a semi-professional league turning more and more into a fully professional league each day. Of course, the kids are still student-athletes, so they better not profit too much, lest they turn into thugs.

But let's back the second one, so kids (the majority of whom are too young to enter a casino legally) can bet on professional sports and we can take advantage of their irresponsible behavior, drive them towards one of the most devastating addictions one can experience and hook them before their brains are fully developed. Of course then we'll just throw up our hands and point the courts to the 1-800 number we listed at the bottom of all our advertisements as proof of plausible deniability.

God bless America. I sure do love it, but **** like this is really ****ing me off.

college students have been betting on sports via bovada from the moment it was a thing. they just can now do the same things everyone else can

Of course they have.

And college athletes have been doing it too. So why do they need to pass a bill to allow them to do it legally now?

so you end the x schools players are betting on games calls that have been going on (i.e. Mateer and OSU Michigan had fans call the NCAA on each other)

I don’t know. People are always doing this stuff. If that was the case, then the NCAA would have killed tons of recruiting violations years ago.

Great point. But, will they wipe the slate clean for all the athletes involved in the 1951 City College scandal, the 78’ BC scandal and the 94’ ASU scandal. Might as well start clean. Just sayin’ And, can the winnings be construed as NIL payments.? D3 guys would appreciate it.

Re: your first point, no, because they never retroactively undo the past.

Re: NIL payments, I don't think so, if the kids are just betting on their own. But I think the NIL play is that ESPN Bet, Draft Kings, etc., could use the kids as spokespersons, which would involve allowing them to bet and perhaps show via content creation how much their winnings are. And yes, for DII and DIII kids that could be huge. Olympic sports too.

I'm just trying to figure out the motivation here. It's the attorney in me. The NCAA isn't just doing this for fun. Someone is getting something out of it.
