When manny started talking analytics i was looking up some famous coaches who never played college football.
Mike leach, paul johnson dave cuncliffe, george o leary. what i noticed is most of them run gimmicky stuff like manny
and are only good on one side of the ball. they never win big. they are all 9 win coaches at best except maybe o'leary but his double digit wins came
in a non-p5 conference. I might be old school but even with basketball i hate the daryl morey analytics crap. I just want a football guy.
To the guys who played college and/or pro, do you think it matters if the HC played college ball?

Golden and Shannon were both decent college players under legendary coaches but neither had what it took to be head coaches.

I really don’t care the background in terms of analytics vs played the game, but I do care about the background in terms of coaching resume.

Didn't play in college but Leach, Cutcliffe, Johnson are/were all quality guys in my book. Didn't win big...sure...in places to win big....nope. On the analytics front, don't let the wannabe Manny sour you on that. It has its place. But at the end of the day, football is about imposing your will on the man across from you.

Alll football teams have a analytic department..NFL and the big boys in CFB..every NBA team has one also..the MLB has been using it for years now..for me it doesn’t matter if you played. It’s a bonus sure. But the qualities That make up good coach for me, communication, teaching, leadership, knowledge, hardworking obsessive quality and ability to learn from others and adapt..now if you have those at a elite level and you played the game at the highest level it’s a all time bonus..but for me you didn’t have to play in college or the league in orde to be knowledgeable and able to teach and lead

When you have a massive staff and support guys playing experience isn’t everything. It’s a much bigger deal in baseball than any other sport. What I look for in a coach is track record. Manny had an up and down past and was thought to be “gimmicky.” While I don’t fully agree with that our d line the past couple years masked a lot of deficiencies his defense had.

The only problem I have with guys who never played, is their need to overcompensate. Manny tries to be the smartest guy in the room, when he doesn’t have to be.

And isn’t.

I believe Belichick played one year of small college football, broke his leg and then switched to lacrosse.

That's all I got.

So someone that played in South Florida in HS played the same level of comp? J/k

No joke- your theory would actually be true. Especially if we're talking modern South Florida high school football vs the Wesleyan college team that Belichick washed out of. I mean he was a center on that team. That's almost all you need to know.

They'd have been massacred by your average high school team down here.

Yeah man yeah dude ***** analytics who cares about competitive advantages bring back the midrange game, gimme some sluggers that get RBIs none of that OBP crap and dagnabbit let's punt on every 4th down unless we're close enough to kick the dang field goal!

OP is a candidate for worst porster on this site. At least worst that I haven't put on the ignore list....until now.

How close am I to that ignore list..out of curiosity?

How many oncologists never had cancer?

:q3xkxex: no.

completely different skill-set. Coaching is leadership, communication, development and teaching.

Surgery has nothing to do with any of that, and most surgeons are bereft of those skills.
