Mendoza is going to be a first round pick of the NFL. That is the highest level. As for dinking and dunking, he averages 10 yards per attempt.
South Florida has nothing to do with it. He gets more hype from national guys than he gets on here. If he was from Austin, Texas, we'd be begging for him.
I think you're placing too much of an emphasis on stats and not enough on tools and ability. Those G5 Johnny College guys without physical ability get exposed in the playoffs against real defenses.
The case for Bailey is simple: 6'6, strong arm, fast, accurate, started as a true freshman, good character, two years of eligibility. He's already made real strength and technique gains in college. I see an upward trajectory.
Whether or not Mendoza gets picked in the 1st round isn't an actual testament to his ability. Teams overdraft at QB because the NFL is a QB league & GM's are always one pick away from either having a franchise guy for 10+ years, or getting fired. Most 1st round QB's end up as busts, mainly because they were overdrafted.
And how can you say I'm placing too much emphasis on stats, while using the fact that Mendoza averages 10 yards per pass as apart of your argument?
Him being from South FL literally has everything to do with it. You've made multiple threads with that as the primary theme.
If Mendoza was from Austin TX & putting up those numbers, he would be getting the Cade Klubnik treatment right now. I wouldn't be begging for him because I don’t like or want average QB's, regardless of where they come from. My whole point, is I want the BEST... Not based on a curve, but based on what they actually can do.
I've watched Mendoza plenty at Cal & Indiana, in both places he's been at his very best slightly above average.
And for me, it's not just stats, I watch QB's quite a bit & only a handful around the Nation have the arm talent & capability to play above the constraints of whatever system they're in. Mendoza & Bailey, are not those types. They're system QB's; when things are scripted & laid out perfectly for them, they can succeed when they're surrounded by good talent. But when all the chips are down & you ask them to put them team on their back, make something happen that goes beyond just playing in pristine circumstances, they don't have that.
As far as the playoffs is concerned, that has everything to do with the team & not just the QB. Will Howard & Riley Leonard were both average QB's who played on teams loaded with talent; The G5 Johnny QB's as you put, don't get exposed in the playoffs, their teams do. But in the league, those Checkdown Charlie's get exposed more than anybody because they can't hide behind their teams anymore.
Again, Mendoza & Bailey are being judged on a low bar; the reason why they even get discussed on here is because of where they were born & grew up: Transpose their numbers & ability on QB's from anywhere else in America & they would never come up in conversation on this board.
Darian Mensah is a big kid, with big arm, smart, mobile & has great numbers, yet hardly anyone ever advocates for him to be a potential Portal add, why? Not from South FL.
