CJ Bailey needs to come home

Think alot of guys are looking at it compared to a 5th year Beck or Ward. This is beginning of 2nd season, Beck was still on bench. This kid is getting reps and getting better. Alof of good tools and he has good habits scanning field and making reads. Alot of senior QBs cant make full field reads, he can come off his first guy and go thru progressions. Kid is very talented as a true soph early in campaign

He looks for Jolie every time.

Last year, there were three quarterbacks I pushed for: John Mateer, Fernando Mendoza and Carson Beck.

Everybody was pretty unanimous on Mateer. That was an easy one.

When I suggested Mendoza, people said he was another Emory and a token Cuban. Since then, a lot of non-Cubans are projecting him as a high NFL draft pick.

I first mentioned Beck on the show the day he got the brace surgery (and not Tommy John). Most people were disgusted and even laughed sarcastically. Now we’ve seen what he can do.

Let’s see how this conversation looks in a couple months. Bailey still has to play real teams on his schedule and continue his trajectory. But I’ve seen very little actual criticism of his skillset and a lot of instinctive backlash for no reason.
Mendoza will not be drafted high if at all. Just my OP but after watching his first game I was extremely unimpressed and that was against Old Dominion. We are very very luck we got Beck because Mendoza would not have been the answer here. JMO

The starter next season will come from the portal. Their
This is the nc state player we need imo

I have watched the majority of their 3 games. Their is no doubt he is carrying them. Now, for the big question. How many of those yards came through the A gap? Why would he come here and what would we do with him? We only need big bruisers to run the A gap. I just don't think that would appeal to Smothers even with our great OL. I could be wrong.

That’s not true. He completed a bunch of third downs with big throws. I don’t have the final stats, but at one point he was 8/9 on third down.

Curious to hear from people who watched the game. What did you see, good and bad?
Arms there
Did well at times going through progressions, but did get feet a few times
Misses some easy throws as well
Someone mentioned he locks onto TE often

Some of these issues could be lack of talent or trust around him.
There is enough to keep tabs, and upside. But his starting for us next year would be much different than ward or Beck. Not sure this staff would prioritize him.

I'm not talking about this game against mighty wake. I'm talking about the highlight clip you posted against Virginia. The announcer himself literally said at the 12:42 mark of the fourth they didn't convert a single third and he missed on that one as well. Didn't get the ball back until the 8 minute mark. Far as the bunch of big throws (assuming you mean the wake game now)he had 23 completions & roughly 180 yards I believe... That doesn't read a bunch of big throws period. It reads a very conservative game plan because more than likely the oc has him on a leash somewhat. Which they aren't wrong to do. Far as what I see good and bad I like the direction his game is going. I've said he's developing more than I thought he'd be able to. I just don't understand the fascination though because his game is still a work in progress. Even he keeps developing at this trajectory & he gains a bit more weight he can be a high tier QB. But he's still a long way from that & too many assumptions are being made. Let him prove his game before we make him such a talking point. He's playing okay. But it's important to note NO ONE has challenged him much at this point and he's playing an Emory version of a game plan. If you simply substitute Emory in for him at NC St and have the same exact results the conversation would be get this kid out of here. Mario & Dawson are trippin...

Fair points. Problem with it all though is in order to get him back here we would have to promise him a job and give out a big nil. What part of a developmental QB do you give those too especially when you have quality on the bench that you've made promises to themselves. It would be one thing if he was a gaurentee as in a seriously proven QB. He's not that. So why burn the room and potentially your season for that.

He's Jacory Harris to me. Has a good arm and can be accurate with nice zip. He can run better than Jacory but IMO if it's not Nickel next year then we need to go after a bigger name.

Jacory? Not sure the similarities go past black and tall
Well I just went and watched old highlights of Harris and yeah they don't have similar throwing motions. Bailey seems to throw with a lot of force while Jacory seems to flick it.

I trust we will get a QB to come through the portal next year. With back to back seasons with Cam and now Carson, provided Dawson stays, my hope is that we literally have our choice of QBs reaching out to us.

And I know he’s not coming here, but if you told JS two years ago if he came to Miami he would catch balls from Cam Ward who would be the #1 pick and Carson Beck, who was already established and will be a 1st round pick in his first two seasons, would JS still go to OSU and catch passes from Will Howard and Julian Sayin? Just sayin.

Oh but this board wanted him desperately.

I only watched the first half.

The better transfer portal options: the ncst RB smothers and Wake wr Chris Barnes. Likely much cheaper with less baggage/Miami fan expectations.

As for CJ, he looked better than last year. Adding the weight helps him in the run game. He made a few good passes but also didn’t blow me away.

The other guy that’s caught my eye (and I’m hardly alone) is Jaron Keawe-Sagapolutele from Cal. He’d be the #1 guy in the Portal and there aren’t too many obvious vacancies with all the young QBs playing early.
That’s the kid I would break the bank for. He is gonna be a star. I imagine Cal will do whatever to keep him

I watched the game. You are correct regarding third down passing. NC State’s offense is weird in that they don’t ask him to throw a lot but when he does, it’s a lot of downfield stuff. They’re not just running a ton of wide receiver screens and bootleg dump off passes. They’re run heavy, Hollywood Smothers is the real star. Bailey does a good job of taking advantage of defenders getting too aggressive against the run. He’s still probably a little too quick to tuck it when pressured. He needs to learn to step up like a lot of younger quarterbacks. He has nice touch on intermediate passes and really doesn’t put it up for grabs. As a player who’s three games into his second season, I’m not sure he’s a guy you throw portal money at. At least not yet. I like his as a prospect. Nice combination of accuracy and athleticism.
