Cignetti Signs with IU Through 2033

Who’s next to get an extension?

With Penn State being the job, my guess is at least 2-3 more. The one that doesn’t get it might be the guy:

- Rhule
- Drinkwater
- Campbell
- Freeman
- Kiffin
- Schiano (dark horse candidate - he’s a PSU guy as well).
- Insert coach name here …….

Schiano at Penn St would be a force. That guy can develop and always has a great S&C program

That’s crazy. I get that you don’t wanna lose your coach, but there’s no way he’s worth that unless they make a run in the CFP.
For some reason, I’m just not a believer and he or Indiana.
He is a great coach. I just don't believe he can turn Indiana into a consistent football school, but it looks like we will all find out.

Fixed it for you
You ain’t wrong. Lol

How much is his buyout? 8 years and over $90M likely means a pretty hefty buyout. I know this man is getting slurped more than a Tootsie Roll Pop on this board right now, but it is 100% possible that in a year or two Indiana regresses to the mean. Could Cignetti have turned the Hoosiers into a top tier football program in less than two seasons? Sure, it's possible. Thing is, how many other times in the last 50 years has a perennial underachiever made a turnaround like this AND had it be lasting? I can't think of any. Typically some loser team will make a run for a year or two then regress to the mean. Mark Mangino (if you haven't seen it, google his name with "Obie" next to it - thank me later) at Kansas comes to mind. He had a 12-1 season and two season later was gone. 50-48 career record there. Sonny Dykes sure was pointed at a LOT at the beginning of Mario's tenure. Now, crickets.
Am I glad that there's another team in the B1G to compete? Sure am. Do I think Cignetti is a good coach? Yes, I'm just not a slurper and I think in time we will find out that Indiana is still a basketball first school.
Just like PJ Fleck at Minnesota a few years ago. They had a good couple of years and he was anointed the next Saban. Now back to reality.

Hard to sustain success year in, year out.

It had to be a typo, but I read on ESPN that his buyout went from $10MM to $15MM.

I would never make a contract over 5 years personally. It's great for him as he never made big money until this job, if he wants to retire there. I have broken down his roster. He had 11 starting transfers last season, 5 on O, 6 on D with a $5 million NIL budget. Many returned. This season between last season transfers and this season transfers, 8 transfers are starting on each side of the ball. 16 tranfers starting. They had a $10 million NIL budget this season. They brought in 47 transfers the last 2 seasons. I believe they will return 7 starters next season, 1 is a K. I know 2 OL starters return. All the top skill positions are gone.It looks very rough. I do not like his odds at all again of replacing almost his whole starting roster through the portal. He is a great coach, but I see this run ending this season. We shall see.

Fleck has a 60% win rate at a school with a historical win rate of 57%. Cignetti is 17-2 at a school with a historical win rate of 42%. IU was 9-27 in the 3 years prior to his arrival. It’s been to 5 bowl games in the past 30 years. It has lost more games than any other program in D1.

What he’s done at IU is an all-time great coaching job. And he’s a perfect personality fit—he’s Bob Knight without the baggage.

A regression to regular bowl appearances and the occasional CFP run is still historically great territory at IU.

Perhaps he’s the chosen one, but his schedule last year was ***. He’s put together a solid squad, but not 100% sold yet
