Chick speaks out on Mark D’Onofrio/Golden Era

You can make the argument Fortson got just as screwed by No D than Chick! As Chitty as we were back then, imagine if they had the same transfer rules that’s in place now! I don’t think we would have fielded a team! It would have been a whole lot of the Fentress types on the squad smh! That dude almost messed up a certified top 10 pick in Ed Oliver! How chitty of a coach do you have to be in order to do that! That took stupid effort to almost pull that off! Chit makes mad just thinking about that dude defense

meh. I call bullchit that Golden and dingleberry messed up his college career. he played the position HE and DADDY wanted...!!! he was just not good enough as a DE. he got manhandle by OT's all day long. he re-discovered his speed in trying to slim down for the NFL combine. his only hope was as a special teams player. as it turned out he got lucky as chit as he still had his wheels. if NFL hadn't become a such a specialty league he would be coaching somewhere right now. anyways, good for him, but he should really shut the F up and count his blessing...
I swear these are the dumbest fcking posts. As if all DE's were created equal. A strong side 3-4 DE in a 2-gapping scheme and 4-3 DE in a 1-gapping scheme are night and day. Not the same position whatsoever. How do you not get that? Do you think he would've been 290 lbs playing in Manny's scheme (or Butch's, or JJ's, or any other fcking Miami DC's over the past 35 years)? Asinine.

Forston never played fo Golden

Forston never played fo Golden
Yes he did. The first year Golden was there, and declared for the NFL the year after. Him, Jacory, Oliver were part of the players suspended the first 5 games or so. Came back and had him playing the nose in a 3-4 scheme, which is basically a stop gap player. He should have transferred, but I'm sure the coaches had restrictions in place.

"I stopped talking to [former head coach] Al Golden and [former defensive coordinator] Mark D’Onofrio week 8 or 9 of my senior season. It was tough. I kind of just cut them off and then cut off the Miami media. I took it out on the wrong people. The Miami fan base is passionate and I was looked at as the guy who would help bring us back and it didn’t turn out that way. When people are saying you suck all the time, as a young kid it was easy to be affected"

"The NFL career, which Chickillo now savors as an outside linebacker with the Pittsburgh Steelers after recently signing his second contract worth $8 million, did come. But the collegiate All-American status? Forget it. And that phone call from a UM Sports Hall of Fame representative delivering the precious news? He doesn’t expect it."

“My biggest dream turned into a nightmare,’’ said Chickillo, a five-star prospect from Tampa whose draft stock plummeted after former coaches had him gain 40 pounds and turned him into a lumbering defensive tackle instead of the explosive, speedy, 6-3, 245-pound All-American pass-rushing defensive end he became at Tampa Alonso High."

"Chickillo said he met new UM coach Manny Diaz and toured the indoor practice facility in February on his way to McDermott’s bachelor party. “It was incredible and I’m really happy for the players,’’ he said. “We’ve come such a long way. Manny said he wishes he could have had me. His scheme is incredible and I wish I could have played in it.’’

McCord was another casualty

If we’re gonna talk about record and legacy... Golden played elite FSU squads every year, while richt got the worst FSU teams in memory. Also, golden played an elite ND squad, while richt got the worst ND squad in memory.

Give the whole picture on ND. You’re leaving parts out.

You hate Richt because he’s religious, but don’t be misleading in your posts to prop up Gluten and smash Rick.

CHICK A LET did EXACTLY what HE and DADDY wanted to do... PLAY DE... He Sucked at it. Honestly, he took snaps away from more productive players. He got LUCKY with his speed. HE would NOT have lost weight and played LB at Miami regardless of what our CHITHEAD coaches wanted him to do... Again, he got lucky as chit while trying to become a SPECIAL TEAMS player in the NFL, he realized he had great speed at that new weight. Everything coming out of his mouth blaming Goldenboy and Frito lay is Total BS and a F ing excuse to coverup for his crappy *** college career. He is truly blessed and should shut his Fing mouth when it comes to blaming others. I've been a Cane fan all my life and I call them like I see them. As for my blessings, I'm doing just fine!

You’re just making shlt up about what chick and his dad wanted.

STFU - you’re just a chick hater and nobody believes your fakkit lies.

I actually love Chicks, just not Chickillo's college game... he got more snaps than any other player on defense and produced the least regardless of the bullchit coaches we had. that's the truth, not hate.

WTH are you talking about? When have I ever said Anythjng about religion?

Btw... I didn’t talk about Richts win vs ND or his loss to FSU. So I don’t think my post was misleading.

Al ****face Folden by far the worst Corch in school history.

Every time I think about that POS it still ****es me off Smfh. I've got no animosity towards Richt he did the best he could & realized he was finished, I even don't have hard feelings towards Shannon like I used to (couldn't stand him when he was with the Gaytes) he was never fit to be a HC, he was a good LB coach here but that it's.

But with Folden, I ****** HATE that clown, I mean unequivocal pure HATE. He completely killed the program doing irrevocable damage & was way worse than Coker or Shannon imo.
To me, Golden and Richt are on par.

Golden dealt with the cloud/sanctions. He steered us through a tough time. He was good in the media his first few years. He was over his head and was a bad hire from the jump. Where he loses points is the PSU interview (which, I can't really blame him...it's his alma matter), but moreso for failing to fire D'Nof. He went down with the ship and took what good will he had with him.

I think Richt was a worse coach. He was also stubborn - hiring and keeping Jon was equal to AG/D'Nof. But he got us the IPF and walked away when his time was up. So he left on a positive note.

But simply based on the product, I am not so sure Richt was better than AG.

Worst ND squad in memory was 10-3, beat four teams ranked in the final top 25, and finished #11 in the final polls?

You know you can make an argument that Richt was a loser without making stuff up right?
What was the record of the Nd squad he lost to?

And before you say I’m cherry picking, I didn’t refer to the FSU team richt lost to either.

Lol. Y'all trying hard af to take those wins away from Richt.
I guess it sounds like that, I was really just stating facts. And comparing contrasting. Neither was good here. In my view they had similar on field results.

Golden never won the division. That's difference enough for me
Ok. Fair.

The difference for me is the off field stuff. The way he left, donating money, and not being Al Golden. On field to me, same guy.

Sanctions, bowl ban, etc... an argument can be made for either being better on- field. Better being a relative term.

Off field tho richt did right by UM.

Golden's two biggest faults were that he coached Miami the same way he would coach Temple and his insistence on sticking a square peg in a round hole.

His first season here, he didn't have the type of players he needed to run his preferred Al Groh 3-4 defense so the played a ton of even front 4-3. Once he was able to fatten up some guys, Chick included, he was able to transition to more of the odd front 3-4 crap he wanted to run. If you want to use a 3 man front, OK, there's plenty of teams that have had success using it but you can't just force guys into the scheme that don't fit. Chickillo was a 6'3" 240 pound pass rusher coming into college. There was NO reason to force him to gain over 40 pounds just because you couldn't recruit the type of guy your scheme required.

Now some people are of the opinion that Golden could have been successful here had he bitten the bullet and fired D'Onofrio and brought in someone else to run the defense. He probably would have been more successful had he done that but his coaching style is more suited towards and outmatched, underdog team than one that is physically superior to most of it's opponents. How many times would he get a lead and immediately go into conservative mode and attempt to sit on any lead no matter how small? His entire philosophy was based on playing it close to the vest and not taking risks. Keep the game close and try to win by a field goal late. Don't shoot yourself in the foot with turnovers and make the other team beat you. Great ideas if your team sucks. If you're outmatched, the last thing you want to do is get too risky in a close game and all of the sudden a 3 point game becomes a 17 point game and the blowout is on. When you're Miami, you cant' coach scared like that. Just keeping it close and trying to win the safe way is a recipe for disaster. Even games they won against Nebraska and Florida, they almost blew because they got super conservative and played not to lose.
