Is this kid done or is he applying for a 6th year? He had a redshirt year, but like Toure, he had two major knee injuries back to back.. Should qualify for a medical redshirt year no? We could use buddy back as the 3rd/4th LB here since we whiffed in the portal there. Great size and athleticism, however, he lacked the movement skills after the injury, but he made some plays here.

I dont know. But I thought he looked better as the season progressed. In fact I though the linebacker play in general was night & day from the beginning of the season to the end.

According to UM site he redshirted in 23 playing in 3 games. 2022 on a couple sites show him playing in 5 games but UM site has him playing in 4. Not sure if that’s the year he got hurt? 21, 24, and 25 were full seasons for him. Might have another year depending on the status of that 22/23 season (1 regular 1 med shirt?)

What happened to NFL ready , everyone is NFL ready , doing what’s dest for his family

Hope he comes back/ looked like the backer we thought we were getting.
Both he and Toure were looking great by the end of the year. Would like to see both of them back. In fact I’m looking forward to the growth of the defense as a whole going into next year. Second season in Hetherman’s system so we should see some solid progression in scheme and speed.

Toure was not great in coverage, but **** good in the run game. Chase looked healthy this year and it was a great surprise. Also like some of the young backers we have, Wiley could e tough to keep off the field.

Run stopping LBs that are also great in coverage can probably be counted on one hand. I’m good with him being out there on run downs.

Toure got better in coverage or not as much a liability as the season went along. Chase also played his best ball.

Ya LB play definitely got better as season progressed

Watching Smith it just looks like he's too slow sideline to sideline. Catch 22 imo because we aren't super deep at LB, but IF IF IF Wiley is indeed ready (and obviously I don't know where he is in his development) , I don't want Smith keeping him off the field.

I already think our D will be at the same level as this past year if not better, but if we can get Chases coming back for one more year, we might have a little less LOS penetration like we did with Bain/Mesi, but I expect fewer assignment mess ups and explosive plays than we had this year (not that we had a lot).

I mentioned it earlier, but if I had to characterize this year's D, I would say it was blunt force trauma. I think this year's D will be suffocation personified.

I said it before in another thread. But if Chase wants to come back I ain’t saying no to an experienced vet. If he gets passed up by Wiley and Bonner it’s all good. He knows what’s behind him. Mario has proven he’s gonna play the dogs always

Strongly disagree. Our defense will take a step, or two, back.

D will be good but losing Bain, Mesi, Kionte and Jakobe will hurt and it'll be hard to replace. Their presence will be missed.
