The Miami Hurricanes nearly signed a deal with Showtime to be the subject of a Hard Knocks-type show for the network, multiple sources told The Big Lead. Although the deal ultimately didn’t happen – there were issues with the production company, sources say – the window doesn’t appear to be completely closed on the project. There is a slim chance it could come together next month.

Showtime had no comment. The Miami athletic department would not comment.

[UPDATE: "We've explored it for over two years and now's just not the right time to get it done," Chris Freet, senior associate AD for communications at Miami tells The Big Lead.]

The untitled show would chronicle the Hurricanes during August leading up to the season opener against Louisville, and then throughout the season, totaling around 13 episodes. Miami, coming off a 9-4 season, are entering Al Golden’s fourth season, and feature a fringe Heisman candidate in Duke Johnson, who rushed for 920 yards in eight games last year before suffering a season-ending injury. Miami’s alluring for additional, obvious reasons – life off the field in Coral Gables and the school’s constant battle against sanctions. They could probably spend half an episode on these snazzy new jerseys.

A source close to the Miami program says ESPN NFL analyst Ray Lewis was going to be a producer.

Not sure if i would want a camera in front of a college football team at all times as a guy looking out for the program but as a fan I would have loved to see the action up close and personal.

Because they're already going to shoot Dumb and Dumber II.

The current state of Miami football is embarrassing. Thank goodness.

Would've been a great recruiting and marketing tool. Especially, with R. Lewis as a producer, would've made sure it was done correctly. Won't be surprise if another school like Ohio St.or Free Seafood University jump on this opportunity.

Would have been great publicity.

Not surprised our AD didn't see the opportunity in front of them.

Considering they've been trying to work it out for the past two years, it seems like they are EXTREMELY aware of the opportunity.

Do you know how many college football loopholes they probably have to jump through to get this type of project off the ground?

How would this be different than filming CanesAllAccess other than Showtime would probably be paying the university?

I'd take all the coverage I can get.

Canes All Access doesn't broadcast their material on a Network that has no affiliation to the ACC?

Miami probably wanting Final Cut so they can make sure nothing that could suggest a compliance violation is filmed/aired as well as not showing anything that other teams can use against them in recruiting and/or on the field?

CanesAllAccess controls the content and distributes it non-profit on its on YouTube page, not even remotely close to a weekly episodic program airing on a major cable channel.

I've seen ACC specials on TV on channels that aren't affiliated with the ACC on the Fox Sports channels.

Also, I'm sure NFL teams have say in what can and can't be broadcast. That's probably nothing new to Hard Knocks.

And as far as violations go, what could be on there that's a violation for players? They do interviews all the time. The only thing is probably no recruits can be featured or filmed with coaches.

The bottom line here is to think that our marketing department and/or athletic department would try to sabotage this project is pretty insane considering how much foresight these guys have had with things like Canes All Access and 3 Penny Films. They've embraced social media and digital branding as much as any university in the country.

There obviously is a lot more that we don't know about (I'd assume money is a huge factor), but I don't think its logical to think that these guys wouldn't love to get more branding out there.
