Name: Charlie Strong
From: Batesville, Arksansas
Likes: A firm handshake

Defensive Coordinator, South Carolina University. 1999-2002

- The year before Strong's arrival as DC, South Carolina's total defense ranked 81st in the country.

- In his first year at Florida, Strong registers the 51st ranked defense under Ron Zook.
- In his second season, his defense ranks 42nd.
- Zook is fired, making Strong interim HC. He loses the Peach Bowl to YOUR Miami Hurricanes.
- 2005...Urban Meyer arrives. Charlie Strong is the only coach from the previous staff he retains.
- Urban tells Charlie he's now the Co-DC with Greg Mattison.
- "No! I don't wanna!" Charlie says. "You can't make me!"
- "Stop it or I'll turn this program right around!" Meyer yelled.

- Over his tenure, his offense were mostly sacks of garbage: 71st, 103rd, 51st, and 28th
- Strength of schedules while at Louisville: 75th, 60th, 70th, 103rd
- Strong says ***** this, I'm going to the only place a black guy with a white wife is welcome.

Head Coach, University of Texas. 2014 - Present

- Welcome to the BIG SHOW, Motha Fvcka.

WhatTheHell's Thoughts on the Candidate

I, like many of you, watched Charlie Strong at Louisville and stared at the screen with drool running out of my mouth and said "that used to be us, man." His Louisville teams played fast, aggressive defense. But that was his trademark as a DC, too. Unfortunately, I feel he is beginning to take on shades of a slightly better Al Golden. It's actually starting to get eerie how similar things are playing out in regards to what we heard about each coach during their first two seasons at their big-time jobs.

Before coming to premier programs, they made their name winning at a mid-major. Obviously, Strong won more. His final two seasons at Louisville were better than anything Golden to put together, but was he simply slaughtering bad competition by wisely assembling a roster of So Fla savages? He showed up in Texas and was forced to play teams every week where the talent gap wasn't as overwhelming, and he's struggling to keep his head above water.

Strictly as a head coach, his team at Louisville was nice...but that was two seasons. At Texas, we've got proof of him getting slaughtered at a high-pressure Power 5 job. So which Strong is the real one? Are you willing to gamble on this hire?

For me, the following is major cause for concern, and why I feel he's a pass right now:

- Success as head coach came at non-Power 5 school
- Gets crack at the big show
- Is having a helluva time at premier program
- A very unimpressive start through his first 2 seasons
- People begin making excuses, simply chalking it up as a "bad fit" - sound familiar?
- Like So Fla players, Texas kids are now being pointed to as a reason for Strong's issues. "Entitled" - sound familiar?
- Has an unacceptable defense. Simply embarrassing - sou- you get the point.
- Suffers humiliating losses he has no business dropping. Blows it off
- Charlie Strong - "I don't think that was embarrassing Saturday because we played hard."
- Is excused for inheriting "a mess" even though Mack won 9 & 8 games the two years before leaving
- Has supporters claiming recruiting territory is overrun with emergence of rival programs
- Like Al, tenure is wrapped in excuses

Strong MAY be a good coach somewhere else. He MAY be better suited as a DC or a HC at a smaller program. I don't know. And I don't think we're in a position to find out. We're at the craps table and we're bleeding chips, I don't think we should throw it down on a long shot.

awesome, awesome write up. Will you this for other candidates too? (Butch, Herman, et al)?

Nice work WTH. I didn't know Strong worked for Holtz. Between that and the whole gator thing he is like a anti-Cane. Let him continue on at UT.

I don't think we are in a position to take on a reclamation project at this moment.
That be Strong or Ritch. Just my opinion.
And before anyone throws up Butch as a reclamation project Butch is the exception do to his unique history with the program circumstance.

The whole point of picking a coach from a lower level is we want him to replicate that success at a higher level. So, if we already know, then it takes the guessing out of it.

SMH....Why so much hate for this guy? Other than Butch there's no better option for Miami. This is the ACC, we're #5 out of 5 as far as power 5 conferences go and we can't even win the weak *** coastal. His last two Louisville teams would've destroyed the coastal. I'm just not understanding the hate....

One other point, Strong is 55 years old. He may still be capable of learning and growing as a coach. IMO, I feel he hit his ceiling and has maxed out.

How is this an argument for him?

Does anyone see a pattern with the Strong supporters? Maybe you're in bad company when your arguments in support of a candidate are both illogical and irrational.

His team in 2012 lost to Syracuse and UConn big guy.

They had 1 win in 2 seasons over a top 25 team. Played in a ****load of close games they didn't have to, including one to a winless SoMiss team.

Strong needs a big talent advantage to win a lot of games.

Strong's OC hires should automatically eliminate him from consideration. Amongst a few other things

I don't like the "hate" but there are better options than Strong besides Butch.
That's a dumb this to say.
At the moment he is failing at Texas. While it was a mess before he got there they have not shown any sign of any improvement in year two.
He may very well just not be a "good fit" there but it's enough of a concern to say its a risk and should push him out of the first tear of candidates. IMO

" Needs a big talent advantage to win"

That sounds like another candidate I know

The SOS in his last season at UL gives me pause.

Seems to be a lot of smoke and mirrors with Strong.

I would pass on hiring him. He's way too risky to bring in right now.

Thing that scares me about Strong is the staff he had at Louisville and now Texas.

Shawn Watson was Strong's OC at Louisville and he went with Charlie to Texas. Charlie just fired him.

The rest of his staff at Louisville....underwhelming. Either nobody wants to work for him or he is as bad as Golden at picking coaches.

Vance Bedford
Defensive Coordinator

Dave Borbely
Offensive Line

Kenny Carter
Running Backs/Special Teams Coordinator

Ron Dugans
Wide Receivers

Clint Hurtt
Defensive Line

Brian Jean-Mary
Linebackers

Sherrone Moore
Tight Ends

Pat Moorer

Tommy Restivo
Secondary

Wanted him for the longest, but what I'm seeing this season is a real cause for concern.

I'd take him over Mario, Schiano and Chud, but that's not saying much.

The same way what Butch did 20yrs ago is an argument for him. That 2012 team also beat North Carolina who tied for the coastal (ACC), Pittsburgh (ACC) and the #4 ranked Gators (SEC) in the sugar bowl. The same Gator team who beat ACC champions FSU (ACC). They would've destroyed the coastal.

Brian Jean-Mary was that crappy LB corch at GTech under Paul Johnson. He tried to get the players hyped up before the 2009 game when we gave them a boot bath.

Based on Charlie's prior coaching staff's.....there are three potential issues....

1. Nobody wants to work for him because he is overbearing;
2. He is not good at picking coaches;
3. He surrounds himself with coaches that are not as good as him so he does not feel threatened.

I think that's a very reasonable point of view.
That's were I am with Strong.
