Can someone explain this old wives tale to me?

"If you start a young QB against a good team and he gets crushed you will ruin him."

Where the **** does this actually come from? It is bull**** if you ask me. Players don't grow without adversity.

I have heard porsters say this in terms of why you can't play Emory at FSU over a hurt TVD. It makes no logical sense and is just a soft mentality excuse. Ask Tua.

I mean, It’s somewhat ironic that you’re asking what confidence can do for a QB when we’ve literally watched a train wreck in slow motion the past few weeks on what happens when a QB loses confidence.
We played a true freshman against Clemson and won. You need any more evidence?

And if a loss on the road to a top 4 team ruins your confidence you shouldn't be a division 1 qb to begin with.

Thats part of the game and all players aren’t built the same. Some can handle adversity and not have it affect their confidence to the detriment of the team. Others obviously aren’t as mentally strong. But i don’t think you can “protect” guys from possibly having their confidence shaken. If you have to do that to the point you don’t even want to play them, you may have recruited the wrong player.

Admittedly, I was on the “You can’t throw a true freshman QB to the wolves against FSU” train. But the reality is Emory has already been thrown out there against a perennial power in Clemp$on. Granted, they’re not the Clemp$on of their championship years but they still have a pretty **** good defense. Dawson came up with a very good game plan for Emory and he executed it very well. And it sure seemed like the team rallied around Emory.

I wasn’t saying that he shouldn’t play because there’s a chance that his confidence could be ruined. I just thought it was ironic that of all people, we should be most familiar with how it looks when that does happen.

I think the vast majority of people don’t want a true freshman to play a road rivalry game against a Top 4 team because he’s often not ready and doesn’t give his team the best chance to win. Not just to protect his confidence. So if Emory gives the team the best chance to win, God help us, put him out there. Obviously a TVD with one (1) working brain cell gives us the best chance to win, but it’s pretty clear he’s had a lobotomy, so maybe the blueprint is to play the world’s most boring game with Emory and hope you can make enough plays and get some lucky bounces (a la Clemson) to win the game something like 23-20.

Miami players have to wait until guys are the perfect height, weight, age. Then they have to had read the playbook from front to back 14 times. They have to then pass a sobriety test, and do the MURPH challenge, recite the Declaration of Independence and then guess Mario’s favorite coffee before you can play. Unless you’re a sure thing like Bain or Francis

You should never be the backup quarterback if we can’t play you in any situation. That’s literally the job of the backup, to be ready. It can be due to an injury, it can be due to a suspension, it can be due to poor performance by the starter, which is our situation. It can happen the first game of the season or it can happen in the National Title game.

It started around the 8th century BC in Olympia. The US National Team refused to let under 18's onto the Olympic team in favor of 'experience', needless to say they got ran by the Greeks.

Didn’t Dorsey get thrown into the mix up in Blacksburg when Kelly got hurt. If I remember correctly we got blown out in that game. He seemed to do ok after it

That quote has no merit in this situation because they already threw Emory in deep end with Clemson wolves defense.. At that point, I feel like every other defense is either shallow plunge pool or sun shelf in comparison.

At end of day I dont think it matters because the scheme, philosophy, approach to offense from the top doesnt seem conducive to good qb development anyway..

It's garbage.

Right up there with "don't eat before you swim".

Forget young/old/in between - Mario's job as a HC is to play the players that give us the best chance to win every week. At the QB position, TVD isn't that player anymore. Choose one of EW/JB and roll. We (and Mario) are making this more difficult of a decision than it has to be.
