Can Mark Richt become an elite coach at UM?

He's definitely not an elite HC..... You become an elite HC by winning big games and NCs which he's failed to do. Beat F$U and Clemson and win a NC and constantly have top 5 recruiting classes and he'll be considered elite to me.

If y'all say richt is not elite then what does that make Butch Davis? Yeah he put together a great roster but what has he done in his entire head coaching career outside of that accomplishment? He didn't exactly win a championship either. None of our coaches who have been successful here before were anywhere near considered elite coaches yet when they got here they won big...

In my opinion, he'll be elite if he wins a couple championships here and has us competing for a couple more (in a 10-12 year tenure before retiring)....

I think it's attainable for him. There's a lot to like about him as a coach....

I'm not a big fan of the Diaz hire as the DC, but Kuligowski and top-notch defensive talent (which we will be getting on a regular basis with Richt as the HC) will certainly help him a lot....

I hope he gets it done - especially since he's an alum....

The dry spell has been far, far too long....

Can Mark Richt draw on his experience as an OC at FSU and HC at UGA and make the jump to be considered an elite head coach at UM? I think it's a valid question given the fact that Richt is now sitting on top what is arguably the richest bed of high school football talent in the nation. It has been said many times that UM with all of the resources it has to offer makes head coaches not the other way around.

If we take a look at two of the most successful HC's in UM history Jimmy Johnson and Dennis Erickson and compare their respective records before and after UM with their records while at UM it is stunningly obvious that JJ and DE had their best years in terms of W/L while coaching UM and it isn't close.

Jimmy Johnson

Oklahoma State 29-25-3
Miami 52-9(1NC)

Dennis Errickson

Wyoming 6-6
Washington St. 12-10-1
Miami 63-9 (2 NC's)
Oregon State 31-17
Idaho 4-8
Arizona State 31-31

Mark Richt

Georgia 145-51
Miami ???????

Many people have made comments regarding Richts inability to win the big game and his head to head record against the likes of Saban, Myer, Miles....Now I'm certainly not trying to deny or spin any of Richts shortcomings or weaknesses. However when you realize that UGA was Richts first shot at being a head coach and guys like Saban, Meyer and Miles had the benefit of having multiple HC gigs under their respective belts, then I'm willing to cut Richt more than a little slack. Then when I see a record of 145-51 in his first go at being an HC at Georgia then I am even more impressed.

My entire point is that if Richt could go 145-51 at UGA in his first head coaching job, is it possible that he could come here and establish himself as an elite championship level coach considering the fact that two of our best HCs in JJ and DE had very mediocre and pedestrian records results before and after leaving UM?

Butch Davis was never an elite coach either. He was an elite recruiter, there's a difference. Also Butch went into a real rough situation and turned the program back into the right direction and basically assembled the greatest college football team ever. Just because he didn't coach that 2001 team, doesn't mean he shouldn't be credited with it. As far as past coaches not having a ton of success before here, well there's a difference between Oklahoma State(JJ) and Washington State(Erickson) than Georgia. Georgia underperformed for many years with Richt. He couldn't win the big games and never won a NC. Winning a NC a Georgia is a lot easier than Oklahoma State and Washington State. Richt is a good coach but not elite and just because you're a homer and think everybody associated with program is great, doesn't make it true. **** you were riding Golden for the longest time too.

Homer? Far from it...
In the past 10 years only 5 different coaches have won championships Nick saban, urban Meyer, les miles, fisher, and gene chizik. And just because you win a title doesn't make you elite see chizik for an example.

Discuss,
Good post, nice, and illuminating research on past experience.

If Richt can have an Herman like affect and put points on the board with an explosive offense we will be in good hands. If our offense starts to click we will be a dangerous team. IMO, the D will be better, but they will still give up plays here and there.

Miami has always been at its best when our defense is our strength.

Yep. Just like some programs (such as Alabama) don't necessarily need great QBs to win championships, just competent ones, Miami only needs competent coaching. And no one can deny that Richt is at the very least competent. But why limit the comparison to JJ and DE? You can make a similar case for all the successful Miami coaches: HS, JJ, DE, BD, and let's throw in LC for his first couple seasons. Other than JJ and what he did at Dallas, if you omit their stints at UM would any of them be considered great coaches?

If you don't look at what Howard Schnelly did outside of UM and consider it some great accomplishments I don't know what to say.

What i'm saying is that if in some alternative universe HS hadn't coached at UM in the early 80s but instead was hired after his stints at Louisville and Oklahoma, that many of the same type people who complain about Richt not being a championship-caliber coach would probably say the same about HS. My post wasn't meant to take anything away from HS or any of the other coaches. It was only intended to say that a coach doesn't have to be a Peterson or Meyer or Saban to win championships here.

We won 8 games last year with 10 win talent. A competent coach should have won 10 with that talent. An elite coach would probably win 12 with 10 win talent.

We won't really know until we consistently beat people. I do believe Richt will recruit great here.

You definitely are the biggest homer on this site. Chizik just fell into a situation with a great offensive weapon and a great defense led by Fairley. He's a good defensive mind but Newton was the main reason for that championship. Only coaches I consider elite are Saban, Meyer, and Harbaugh(hasn't won a championship yet but will soon enough). Miles and Fisher fall into that next category. Winning a NC doesn't make you an elite coach but consistently being a top tier team, winning big games, and being top 5 in recruiting year in and year out means you're elite which is what Saban and Meyer do. Harbaugh is elite to me from what he did at Stanford(very hard to win at), what he did in the NFL(turning the 49ers to a winner), etc. Soon enough he'll have a NC at Michigan.

You were making a good case until the Harbaugh fanaticism. Your entire argument about Richt is incredible as soon as you call Harbaugh elite.

Harbaugh consistently loses big games. Him and Richt are on the same **** level.

Both are elite coaches. You dont need to win a ship to be elite.

The **** if you don't need to win a championship to be elite. I explained Harbaugh's situation. Losing in the SB is a lot better than anything Richt has ever done. Elite is the best and Richt isn't in that tier.

Then stick with your original argument. Adding harbaugh makes you incredible. Losing the superbowl just makes him a bigger loser and choke artist.

You like harbaugh. Cool, so do i. But under your own logic he is not an elite coach. All that" he's going to be" crap means nothing.

My aunt was going to be my uncle but she got labia.

Richt does not have to be an elite coach.
We know the recruiting will there. All we need from him is to continue to be a very good coach, ala
Erickson and Butch*, to win National Championships.

*2001 NC= Butch
