Buyouts Let's get to it

Remember their defense held Bama down pretty well, they just couldn't do anything against them on offense but that team would have been favored to win every game except Clemson in the ACC with a healthy Frenchie.

They didn't do anything on offense because Cook was in the NFL.

Francois had little to do with Jimbo only winning 5 games with a defense littered with NFL players, terrible eval at QB did.

Also Jimbo left FSU with the lowest APR in FBS and a culture of entitlement, so saying Jimbo didn't leave a mess is disingenuous at best.

He was never worth what they paid him. Someone tell me why they even hired him in the first place.

7-5 he might be safe. 6-6, and a bowl win, he might be safe. 5-7 and he's gone, in my opinion.
Same reason UM hired golden

It's a catch 22. I feel higher base pay with shorter contracts are the best. But then if u really wanna keep the coach its easier for others to pouch them. If you go longer then it adds up and leave u with money tied up if you get rid.

A mess? Nah that rooster was/is stacked with talent. Should have paid him but I’m glad they didn’t

All good in theory, until you're on the wrong end of musical coaching chairs.

Coaches are getting what they're getting as there aren't a slew of next-level guys just waiting around to jump ship wherever they're at to go to the University of (blank).

Look at Florida and their huge athletic budget over the years. What have they done since Urban Meyer pulled up his stakes and left; Meyer and up-and-comer because of success at Utah and hardly a next-level guy or proven name who made his name in Gainesville.

Threw money at former Texas head-coach-in-waiting Will Muschamp, who turned out to be an overrated ****. Settled on Jim McElwain and his Alabama offensive success, plus two years turning lowly Colorado State around. Another whiff of a hire. Also settled on Dan Mullen because of his tenure with Meyer and decent success at Mississippi State, but hardly a next-level guy.

All that off-season chatter when they too thought they were going to get a Jon Gruden, thought Bob Stoops was coming back at some point, or that they would lure Chris Peterson away from Boise State before he went to Washington. None ever came close to happening.

Oklahoma settles on Lincoln Riley when Stoops steps down; a 39-year old, two-year coordinator. Ohio State settles on Ryan Day after Meyer leaves; another young, inexperienced coordinator. Oregon has an assload of money but locks down Mario Cristobal after Willie Taggart; (Cristobal getting $2.5M but one of the best bonus plans in the game at around $1.9M). Meanwhile Florida State can't do any better than Taggart when Fisher left—despite being five years removed from a national title at the time?

What about Tennessee's post-Fulmer disaster; overpaying Lane Kiffin, Derek Dooley and Butch Jones—throwing big money at anyone they think is the next big thing; just like they did again with Jeremy Pruitt.

Fans always think the next-big-name is just a "blank check" away from jumping to their school, but it doesn't work out that way. More guys like Peterson, who stayed put at Boise State until a dream job came in Washington (his dad a Huskies fan an him spending his youth on the Pacific Northwest). Gary Patterson stayed at TCU despite constant overtures to leave. Matt Campbell is hanging around Iowa State, hoping his star doesn't fade before a big job comes calling.

Fact remains, there are more good coaching jobs out there than they are good coaches—which puts the power in the hands of the coaches, more than it does the schools. Plus, an SEC school with big money couldn't care less bout paying off some dude's contract. It's chump change to them and their big money boosters. They want the right guy and will pay out the nose to get him.

I agree with mostly all of that.

The main thing I disagree with is that there aren't enough good coaches out there. The problem to me is the expectations. Everyone has sky high expectations, but there are always going to be winners and losers. For every 10-2 team, there's going to be an 8-4 or 7-6, etc. Some schools, just never have a good shot at usurping the powers that be.

So I'm short, that leaves a bunch of good coaches that don't stand a chance from go.

Yup...and don't forget LSU had to "settle" for Orgeron who had a 16-27 record. People thought He was a joke and now He has LSU in playoff position.

FSU's APR is always ****. It was low under Bowden as well. FSU would have won more games with Francois than true freshman Blackman. They definitely had entitlement issues but Willie is in year 2, he shouldn't be having issues with entitlement anymore.

Not very familiar at all with the semenhole financial situation. But just out of curiosity why was jumbo owed a buyout? Didn't he quit?

There are good and bad examples for every type of coach a program "should" hire. Some people swear by the young up and comer. Some people want a guy who's proven it before. The thing is, nobody is a sure thing. Outside of someone like Nick Saban or Urban Meyer who's names carry so much cache', every coaching hire is a gamble of sorts. Lincoln Riley had no head coaching experience and only a couple of seasons of coordinator experience when Oklahoma named him head coach. Now, he's the hottest name in coaching. I've heard rumors that Jerry Jones is ready to offer him $15 million a year if Dallas doesn't make a deep run this year.

Programs often rush to extend or overpay current coaches because they're only a quick change of heart by some other AD from losing their guy. Dana Holgerson had been solid but nothing special at West Virginia. WVU didn't bother extending him and he just left them to coach Houston. He wan't fired, he just took a job he liked better. It might not be the end of the world for West Virginia because I don't really think Dana is that great but they were still left holding their d*cks without a coach while they weren't actively shopping for a new one.

I'm the last Cuckbo defender but FSU left itself in a mess. They obviously thought Cuckbo was replaceable and that their mighty program could sustain itself so this is what you get when you exacerbate arrogance with a lazy/bad hire. We know the drill.

Willie’s biggest issue was hyping up the team last year pre season. New coaches usually say “this is a rebuild and will take time.” For instance, UVA Bronco said “we have 20 acc quality players on the whole team” when he got there.

Willie on the other hand said they were ready to go with their lethal simplicity. He didn’t temper expectations. He raised them.

But but but...when has a fired coach ever been successful!!

Texas A&M bought him out in order to hire him during his FSU contract.

Kind of like #TNM

Taggart's buyout is $17m. Apparently F$U's athletic department lost $2-3M last year. They'd have to buy out Taggart and buy out a new coach. I think Willie gets the sack this year, but that's a ****load of money.

Ahh ok..so they should have money. Unles they gave willy a high buy out number....please baby Jesus let that be the case!

Yes, I think the exact number is in this thread. FSU needs to pay around $17M at this point.

They might hire an up and coming coordinator in order to save on the buyout. Or just hire Leavitt from their support staff.
