build a stadium fundraiser

The idea that my guys and I have is that if we can start raising money we can get the attention of Lemonis, former athletes, alumni, and so on. Once they see that we are serious and something is actually happening, they will have the opportunity to "put up or shut up." If those guys can get involved and put in the larger dollar amounts, then we can have a voice with the University. We will be able to tell them that they won't get this $10 million donation unless some stadium contracts are being written or a buy-out with SunLife is signed.

I think the other guy was joking with the GoFundMe. Ill keep keep doing some research. If i find nothing, my guys and I will start our own with our own money. I hope you guys are willing to support it.

Heres a link to a domed stadium concept that Jackson State University was planning. Says that the cost was estimated at about $200 million. Not sure if it ever came to fruition for them, but our 5 time national championship team deserves it.

With the lightning delays, might be cool to watch games in a dome. Noise would be nuts. Could call it the ThunderDome. (Get it? Hurricanes...Thunder...) Anyways, would be nice to have something of our own. Gotta start somewhere.

Check it out. The JSU Domed Venue | Jackson State University

I posted this in another thread but you can donate to the school and restrict the way they use the funds. They are a non-profit organization and a lot of the money comes from donations. If you donate, you could restrict it to be used only on a stadium, and the school cannot use the funds until they build the stadium. They can invest it and make money off the principal through interest but you could also restrict that.
So you want people to send their money to UM for a stadium even though UM isn't raising money to build a stadium. Sounds like a winner. I send $1,000 to the school and they just sit on it since they can't spend it. And I don't have my $1,000.

Finance major?

I don't understand why you're taking shots. I'm simply stating what I know. It's an option. People here know very well the school sits back and does the bare minimum. I'm not saying anyone here should start it. I'm saying if Lemonis is serious about it he should get it going. Start the fund and have people donate to it. I've always said the former players should have done this. When I get those ESPN alerts about guys donating a million here and there I'm just like, man if they would only do that for a stadium this could become a real possibility. It's gotta start somewhere. It takes one of those big guys to drop the first major donation and get the ball rolling.

But that's not what you said. You said to send money to the school and earmark it for a new stadium. If the school isn't running a fundraiser, what do you think they are going to do with your check?

I meant it to be as an option. Not telling anyone what to do with the money. I don't know why you're so hostile and coming at me.
Don't worry about him, he's just a jerk who's mad that no one cares about hockey in Florida.

Thanks homie. Hockey sucks.

They wouldnt even need the extra seats Miami could still use sunlife for the bigger games like FSU.

$200M is way off on cost for the Jax St building. First off construction costs have risen 30% in the last 12 months and secondly the cost of building in Miss vs Miami is 50% higher at a minimum.

Just out of curiosity, what makes it 50% more expensive? The land? Labor? Building/zoning permits?

Am I wrong in thinking that a) the university needs to start this, and b) getting out of their current stadium deal is a big obstacle?

Really, if the university doesn't get onboard first, I don't see how this can work. Even if we raised $100Million, there's nothing to say they would build a stadium. If they don't want to or don't believe they can, no amount of grass-roots money will force them. That said, I would go $500 for this. It would have to be a serious effort, and I'd have to be able to get my money back if the they didn't break ground in a year or two.

As a side note, I've often wondered why donated money doesn't go towards sweetening the coaching salary so we can land a big fish. It sounds like that's not a concern this time around, but I have wondered in the past.

I've reached out to the AD and Assistant AD as well as the President and a few people in the presidents office. To try to gather more information as to what they would be willing to do if we raised a large sum of money. Its the holiday week so I don't expect to hear anything soon. I plan on stuffing their inboxes until i hear something though.

I feel like with money and the right people on board, we can apply pressure. We have guys who are in support of building a stadium who have a media voice. If this thing gets some legs we can get the guys who have radio shows or tv shows or whatever to start bringing some attention to it and in the end force some action. $1 or $2 or $10 million isn't going to build a stadium but it tells the university that we're serious about this and we have done our part and will hopefully force them to do more. Imagine Lebetard on ESPN talking about how this small grassroots group raised $5 million and the university still refuses to build a stadium! Not a good look for them.

Im still trying to learn about the GoFundMe process. I'd like to use the "All or Nothing" platform, that way if all fails, everyone gets their money back. Still a lot of research to do, but its coming. We arent gonna just go away.

When you guys are asking your inside sources about the coaching search, if you could gather any info about the process of building a stadium that would be much appreciated.

Is this a joke? You expect to get the attention of the university with $5 million toward a $300 million project?

So, are they actually building the dome in Jackson? The last I heard they had identified more than $300 million in various options to finance the plan. That sounds shaky at best.

Anyone know where that project stands today?

The point is, large sums of money gives us a voice. Look at the attionShapiro got from the university by donating a couple hundred thousand. Like I said earlier, $5 million won't build a stadium but it allows us to apply some pressure.

LOL, no it doesn't. $5 million is absolutely nothing. Half of the BOT could cut that check this afternoon.

I have no idea as to this working or not, but I disagree. It's not that $5 million puts a dent in the overall cost, but I think Rep has a point. It may be enough to show that a new stadium is something fans really want, and unlike most things, are willing to put their own money behind. Point being that 5$ million could very well lead to much more.

And sure, BOT members are probably rich enough to pay that, but would they? Of course not.

As a final thought, if you believe that a banner over the stadium put any kind of pressure on the university, then why is $5 million as a motivator so hard to believe? How much did those banners cost anyway?

How about a Chip Kelly fundraiser?

The rest would take care of itself and save us a ton of money

It didn't cost $300 million to fire Al Golden. If you call UM and tell them you have raised $5 million for a new stadium, they will give you a nice, canned thank you and hang up and tell everyone in the office what just happened.

Remember, this is the fanbase that had 50 people at the "Save the Orange Bowl" rally.

I got a reply from Blake James. Basically says that the money raised would be better suited going towards an indoor practice facility. Says that with a sizable donation we could have the facility named after us. I get the impression that the IPF is the priority and the stadium won't be considered until after that is done. We still believe that we can apply some pressure with a substantial donation. Would be nice to team up with Lemonis and make something happen.
