Bruce Feldman: "UGA top underachieving teams past 10 yrs"

If he can do what he did at UGA here our fans will be ecstatic. He was plays away from beating bama in 2012 SEC championship game.

And would have won Nqtty easily as did Bama.

And Charlie Weis was one 4th and 9 stop from playing for the 2005 national championship. He came probably closer to a NC game than Richt ever did. Right after inheriting a team from the worst recruiter ever in Ty Willingham. Want to hire Weis?

Does almost accomplishing something count? No it does not.

Gus Malzahn actually did play for a NC. And he came 13 seconds away from winning it.

Want to hire him?

Listening to Pete's interview (great interview by the way Pete) and heard Bruce mention that. Pretty crazy, considering Miami is prob #2 on that list and we end up hiring former HC of #1 .

I'm hoping Richt turns it around, but couldn't history like that come back and bite us in the ***??? Just like how Goldens under achievements at Temple translated over to Miami.

Before I ask "why?"...

I've got plenty of numbers that will support this. Check out Richt's record vs top 15 teams (I know what it is, but I'll let you do the work). And, to be honest with you I always thought his UGA teams were a little over rated, along with a few other teams in the SEC.

That being said, now I'll ask. Why?

Richt has been our coach for 8 months now. He's back to calling plays, coaching his QB's and seems to be reinvigorated.
The season starts in 5 weeks and i'm behind coach 1000%.

Why, 8 months later are you stiiiiiiiiiiiill questioning the hire???
As a Miami fan, I would think at some point over the past off-season you'd just
get on board and go with it. I mean there's just so much time and energy one could expend on being speculative.

It's now time to watch, then assess the on-field results when we have them.

agreed.

The difference is coaching in the SEC vs coaching in the ACC. Easier road to the playoffs here. Think about it this way. If jumbo fisher was coaching in the sec do you still think he'd have a NC?

I love the Richt hire but the SEC East was god awful the last few years.

Shhh! Don't tell the porsters who are gushing about how he played in the tough SEC! I'm not sure that the SEC East has been any better than the ACC Coastal as of late. The SEC East has definitely been worse than the ACC Atlantic Division.

Thank you Waterfall for exposing the mentality that has plagued this fanbase for so long. Well Golden "almost beat FSU 2014", things would be different. The excuses are abundant. The reality is the best teams and organizations don't "almost", they win plain and simple.

I'm still seeing this "almost" excuse thrown around which makes me sick. Lately it's in the form of "Richt almost beat Bama in 2012" and "Coach Dungans almost got JJ to commit to us, the previous coaching staff was not even talking to him." Some of you guys forget where the bar should be at Miami.

This idea that Miami fans are "settling" is BS. No one is settling. Look at the empty seats. Thise are fans that didn't settle. The reason Miami has slipped is because the admins thought they could stay on cruise control and hire Coker, Shannon and Golden. Not because fans "settled" for a major coach from the SEC.

If fans arent happy with this hire, I don't know what to say

( And that doesn't mean he gets a pass if he fails, but c'mon...)

Don't waste your time with these mopes, K9.
These folks would complain about the curtains at an orgy.

Georgia has never been great except maybe when they had Herschel. Georgia was not considered to be a great job until Richt got there and raised expectations.

Yes true. I mean it's not like UGA killed it pre-Richt. However, it's still not a good sign for us. What if CMR gets us to 10 wins and can't get us over the hill? I think at that point maybe Richt will retire and we can hire Mario.

Coker went 26-32 at UTSA. He also was their 1st coach rather than the 2nd and had to build a team from scratch. He sort of voluntarily retired/ sort of got shoved out due to bad health and declining records.

Golden was 27-35 at Temple. Facing better competition than Cristobal did.

Cristobal was 27-47 at FIU. In the Sun Belt conference.

STFU with your suggestion of him.

I'm not complaining about Richt. I'm just disappointed that so much of our fanbase is into moral victories. Like coming about 7 yards short of beating Alabama and advancing to the NC game.

Yes totally agree, the moral victories and excuses were rampant under both Golden & Shannon.....

- Typical excuse under Golden... "But there's a CLOUD over him right now, wait till it's gone Golden is going to lock up every Matt Thomas and Alex Collins"...

- Typical excuse under Shannon "Randy Shannon is only recruiting players who WANT to be canes, if Lamarcus Joyner, Sammy Watkins, Patrick Peterson they do not want to be Canes. TRUST Me Keion Payne, who wants to be a Cane, will be 1000x better than Larmarcus Joyner."

Blah Blah Blah.... even though Richt is just starting out, I'm already starting to see the same dialogue shape with us losing Jeudy and other recruits.

Really cute.

The same poster is disagreeing with himself, but a couple of posts down, he kisses and makes up with himself.

What a loser mentality. "Never ours to begin with". Do you think Ed Reed or Ray Lewis think like this? Champions go out and get it, they know they don't deserve anything.

Lol the irony of you talking about champions. How many has Bama won since 2009? Are you really that dense that you can't see why a top recruit would pick Bama over Miami in the year 2016?

Also lol at loser mentality. Aren't you the same guy already doubting Richt? Aren't you the same guy that started a thread about Jeudy staying Ridleys ppl? If you heard that why would you talk **** about us not getting him if you knew what was up. I don't give a **** if he comes here or not. We win, and everything will take care of itself.

Georgia was a strong team before Right. They won 5 national titles. Vince Dooley had them at the top of the SEC perennially.

Uh, no.

They've won 2 titles (1942 and 1980). The only dominant run they had was during the Herschel Walker years. Other than that, Dooley pretty much lost 4+ games every other year.

UGA was literally a few yards away from the title game. It doesn't get any closer than that.

Plus, Weis proved his early success was a fluke. He couldn't sustain. Richt has been churning out 10-win seasons like clockwork. Hiring a guy with that level of consistency who came close to the title a couple times is a much better proposition than a guy who flamed out quickly after one or two hot years.

The only other options besides Richt were unproven Group of 5 guys (e.g. Herman, Fuente, Babers, etc...), less proven Power 5 guys (e.g. Dan Mullen, The Pirate, etc...), first-timers (e.g. OCs, DCs, position coaches), or retreads (e.g. Butch, Tuberville, Mario, Kiffin, etc...)

Considering how poorly run and irrelevant our program has become, Richt was the best hire.

I never said "can't see why a top recruit would pick Bama over Miami", all I said is we have to do a better job fighting for these kids. I mean Mario is running laps around our staff right now. The fallacy of your argument is that in order to win, we NEED to keep kids like Jeudy. All you guys go into denial once they go elsewhere and claim these kids are overrated. But can't you deny how we missed Watkins, Patrick Peterson, Lamarcus Joyner, Alex Collins, Amari Cooper? All these guys were studs that was the key for winning for their team. Same thing with Jeudy, we will regret not signing him.
