Brock Berlin as our QB...

Ive been watching, just got done with the highlights of both games. Its not on all Brocks shoulders. anyway, i still cant process it. it burns still.

You didn't have to watch it, here's some highlights from ESPN's game recap of our 10-6 loss to Tennessee:

Nov 10, 2003

  • Brock Berlin slowly walked through the Orange Bowl with his girlfriend on one side, his parents on the other and two security guards close by.
  • He needed consolation -- and maybe some protection.
  • Berlin threw two interceptions and fumbled once as No. 18 Tennessee stunned sixth-ranked Miami 10-6 Saturday, knocking the Hurricanes out of the national championship picture for the first time in four years and ending the nation's longest home-winning streak at 26 games.
  • Tennessee won with just 170 yards of offense, 81 passing and 89 rushing.
  • The Hurricanes (7-2) failed to score a touchdown at home for the first time since 1984.
  • It also was the first time since a 47-0 drubbing at Florida State in 1997 that Miami failed to scored a touchdown in any game.
  • Berlin's second interception cost Miami a chance at winning the game.
  • Miami has scored just one touchdown in two games.
  • Most of the problems have stemmed from Berlin, who threw two interceptions against Virginia Tech last week.
  • "The interceptions are unacceptable," said Miami coach Larry Coker, who benched Berlin against the Hokies and said he will re-evaluate the quarterback situation this week. (Berlin was benched the next game)

Don't know if he was the finest 2 minute drill guy there was, but your point is well taken. Brock was "undercoached" by Coker and Werner. They were too in love with Frank Gore being in the I-formation, which, given Frank's amazing talent, I understand.

But the fact is, Brock was a lot better than they gave him credit for, particularly his senior year, and they didn't maximize that talent.

True, he might not had been the finest but it was certainly what he was best at. I prefer our traditional offense and a drop back QB taking snaps under center BUT Block was our QB and he sucked at it compared to how good he was in the shotgun. If you don't have the players needed for your system you need to change your system to fit what you have.

Brock Berlin had all the physical gifts in the world....He is still one of the top 10 all time highest rated recruits per 247....And, I believe, the highest rated prospect at any position to ever play for the Canes....

Yet, I have never once heard his name come up in a discussion of our best ever QBs....Mostly because he wasn't....
That would’ve been Jessie Armstead

Spurrier said in an interview after Berlin started to play for UM that he was still following Berlin's play after he left UM and that he observed that Berlin's play was best when in the shotgun. That could be why Betlin couldn't beat out Rex Grossman when both were at UF. I guess Spurrier felt he couldn't adapt Berlin's strength as a shotgun QB to his system.

been watching all the games on youtube, Man, that was a QB to me deserved more credit than shown.

Great QB out of the shot gun. It just shows how we have failed in that department. Even Kyle Wright showed how we have fallen.
If we had the 2004 brock on on that 2003 team, we would have 6! But brock in 2003 three played like Vinny in that fiesta bowl

He was 5-0 vs Noles and Gators in 2 years... he alright in my book.

In the 2 games vs. FSU in 2003:

  • Berlin threw for 338 yds, 1 TD and had 5 turnovers
  • Sean Taylor had 3 INT's, 1 returned for a TD

But Berlin gets credit for those wins

We only won those games is because Sean Taylor, Vince Wilfork, Jon Vilma, DJ Williams and Antrell Rolle were there to clean up Berlin's mess.

Two things.
1. If Berlin was transferring here in 2019, some ****** CIS member would say it's because he's scared of Rex Grossman.

2. Never put Berlin and Rosier in the same sentence. Brock Berlin not only got drafted, he played a few years in the NFL. Even started a few games. Rosier will never ever ever even sniff an invite to an XFL camp. Let alone play in the NFL.

Shotgun Berlin, good.

Under Center Berlin, bad.

Simple as that.

I would gladly have a player like him as my starter this year if we had the right system in place.

True.

And some hard-nosed running by Jarrett Payton.

I would like to think this is true, but there is one thing that's holding me back.

Remember the '04 game vs Va. Tech to close out the season at home? A win would have given Miami an ACC title first year in the conference.
But Brock couldn't get it done and kept getting his passes batted down at the line.

He wasn't a fit in our offense at the time, and Coker, the one who brought him in as a quick stop gap after Dorsey, somehow didn't have the recognition that he needed to tweak the offense in favor of Brock.

The kid played shotgun through Evangel and Spermier at UF, and all of sudden we are going to convert him into an under the center QB at 6 ft. nothing?

The UFag comeback is all Coker should have needed to see from Brock in the shotgun set to find a way to leave him there. Either that, or don't bring the kid in the first place...let him go finish up at Houston or TTech.

I'm not saying the 2004 Berlin was great.. I'm just saying that with avg qb play in 2003 we win the whole thing! The VT and tenn games we lost in 03 was due to ****** qb play. Jason white or Matt mauck wouldn't have had a chance

So you're saying his 139 yd, 0 TD, 1 INT, 1 Fumble game when all we needed was 17 points to win the ACC didn't do it for you?

60% is better than rosier.

True. But in the end their passing stats at Miami look very similar

Berlin - 406 of 700 - 58.0% - 5,099 yds - 34 TD - 23 INT - 128.6 Rating
Rosier - 337 of 632 - 53.3% - 4,543 yds - 34 TD - 25 INT - 123.5 Rating

Factor in their rushing and that makes it a lot closer

Rosier - 831 yds, 12 TD's
Berlin - -115 yds, 0 TD's

In the end, I'd say

2003 Berlin = Rosier's passing with Kaaya's mobility
2004 Berlin = Kaaya's passing with Kaaya's mobility

Berlin played under the gun all through HS the idiot coaches couldn't improvise. They tried to put a square block into a round hole, he sucked under center. Most of the fans didn't get it either, I got bashed on grassy all the time for saying keep Berlin in the gun. The Florida game pretty much proved what style Berlin needed to succeed at Miami. Coker sucked. You could see it way before this game, college football was changing the Miami coaches weren't.

If i recalled, half of grassy posters acknowledged that Brock was very comfortable in the shot gun. Im not disputing this. some make it as head coaches and some dont. Randy Shannon was a good Defensive coordinator but again not a good head coach. we will see with Coach Diaz.
