Bolden and K Smith

bolden was hitting yesterday for sure. Hall had a nice open field tackle in the first half and a good hit late in the game too. They should be our starting safeties period. Carter is too much of a liability
Is it bad I wasn't shocked they called a targeting penalty on him? I know it got reversed and it was a good reversal, but I feel like he leads in with his head way too much and has a reputation now. Like you said, could be a liability there too.

I'd have to ask around, but I wonder if KSmith has been worked in to some of the Safety rotation in practice. I realize he's fighting for and even splitting the "striker" job.

If I'm running that defense, I'm trying to get KSmith, Hall, Bolden, Frierson, Couch, Blades on the field at the same time in some scenarios. That dime package, with someone like Brooks or Huff, and a front 4 of Roche/Phillips/ Harrison-Hunte/Nesta is my "3rd down stop" package right now.

Huff and Smith are too versatile to not have out there in a situation like that. 3rd and long and that should be it every time. Let the front 4 rush and play defense behind them.

I was at the game and had seats close to the field in the end zone. I was impressed by Bolden during warm ups (looked like a smaller Sean Taylor) and told my friends "can't wait to see him crush somebody in the game". Quite frankly I was disappointed in what I saw as I felt he ran around a lot and seemed to avoid hitting people when he could have made a statement to their receivers on several occasions. Maybe it was rust and he will now pick it up and play to his advertised potential. I wish him the best after our investment and for the sake of the program.

He's NEVER BEEN GOOD.

Dude can lay the wood. That's it. Crazy to me that there was actually a targeting call overturned for him (rightfully). He's gonna cost us this year with a big penalty and get himself kicked out of a game.
I disagree that he will cost us. He tries to separate the man from the ball. I can respect that. He's lacks range

Naw I seen Bolden lay a couple of good hits in that game

I've always liked Smith. The Striker roll is perfect for him. He played a lot of safety in the box in high school. I would rather have him in their than frieson when we're playing teams that like to run.

He basically played MIKE lb in high school. He would play s in 7 on 7s and stuff. I knew that role would fit him like a glove because he can hit and hi sball skills are pretty solid

Actually thought he looked lost a few times. Was active in 4th, but impressed isn’t close to what I thought he played. I saw him get blown up on one of the plays also.
He will get better obviously but his game was average yesterday

Yeah I didn't want to rain on the parade here, but right now he has strengths and weaknesses. His primary strength at this point in his career is in pass coverage. He covers a lot of ground and has real good instincts at this stage of his career. He also chases run plays well and made a couple plays on the backside.

The area where he was a liability at times last night was when the ball was run at him. I suspect that's what you're alluding to. He's not a big kid right now. He's listed at 215 but doesn't look it. He'll get bigger and stronger and will be able to overcome this, but right now he's best suited to passing downs.

I do share everyone's enthusiasm that he's going to be a really good player for us. Just needs a get a little bigger.

He not a hitter bro. He dives at ankles but is always around the rock. He and carter are opposites and you could mix them you would have a beast lol. Hard hitting of carter with the awareness and coverage ability of bolden. But everyone can’t be ST.

Everybody keeps saying how hard Carter hits but when you’re never in position to make a big hit then it doesn’t matter. His hitting ability is overrated af to me honestly he is not anywhere near one of the hardest hitters to have played safety for us in the past.

Bolden does dive tackle a lot but he never avoids contact... I’ve seen him lay the wood as well, he did against UAB knocked the ball carrier back sideways and he got up like it was nothing.

Just saying I disagree with the narrative that Bolden and Carter are equally flawed... Carter doesn’t have what Bolden lacks. Carter is honestly not a good safety at all imo. He isn’t nearly as bad as Ivey or McCloud at their positions but at the same time he isnt what I would consider a starting UM caliber player.
