Bigger star in South Florida: Toney or Messi?

Lots of folks in this country follow this sport. He was probably at a high end restaurant with fellow diners recognizing him but choosing not to bother him. Those sort of establishments have people who know better and are around celebrities. They are not going to show up wearing tube socks and oversized NFL jersey with matching cap asking for autographs.

By the way, last week I was driving up and down soFla and at a couple of Florida Turnpike stations the local stores were selling a bunch of Argentine/Messi jerseys. Nothing on the Florida teams.
I only can speak for the hood, I grew up in the hood and anyone that had interest in soccer in my friend group was like 1 person. And then he got into football and basketball and those became his main. He knew everything but most people dont care for it I am not trying to be a ****. I know its the worlds most popular sport but here it isn't even in the top 3. Unless that has changed I dont see it still with my eye balls at least. Some people play it I see but its not the sport here where I am at, most city HS kids play football and basketball thats it.

If I walked by a soccer player not named the Portugal guy whatever his name is, I wont know who they are foreal. It's a great sport and takes major skills I just dont enjoy it too much unless its the world cup.

in every other country its the opposite. its crazy

This is a major international metropolitan city. World wide representation.
Even in the black community the amount of persons of Caribean, Central and South American and African descent are plentiful.
If you can’t admit that and want to keep Dmoney’s perception then go ahead and not accept truth.
Yep you're spot on, alot of ppl are out of touch with how much international/carribbean influence there is in South Florida.. soccer is BIG down here period.

Dmoney gotta stay away from those cans that he’s promoting.
We have Jamaicans, Haitians, and people from all over the carribean.
South Americans, Europeans, Central Americans,
And even if your not from one of the countries where soccer is king, Messi has done commercials for Michelob, Apple, Lays, Gatorade, Adidas, Lowes,
And how many times has he been on espn sports center.
How may highlights.

DMoney needs detox and a 32oz porter house.

Edit: add to that the number of youth soccer players and clubs down here from ages 5-18 and your start to see the impact.
Weston FC alone has 1,100 registered players. And that’s just one club.

Alot of what you write is not entirely wrong. There are many pockets of this country where soccer is simply a sport where you enroll your kid in order for them to run around and stay active. In other cases, an entry into athletics before they start playing "real" American sports. In the past this may have been tennis or something similar. But make no mistake, there is a strong and plentiful group of Americans who played and/or followed the sport. Most of the fans follow the foreign leagues and not as much MLS and USL which has its limitations and myopic owners involved.
Soccer in this country could really use a boost from the inner city and working class youth. As it stands, that sector is mostly immigrants or their sons. But one could say the same about baseball, hockey, tennis or golf.

Soccer in other countries is crazy insofar as in any given major city you may have multiple pro clubs representing people from different ethnic and social economic backgrounds. Case in point Madrid, Buenos Aires, and London.....closest comparison we may have in this country is college or HS vibe.
