Best 30 for 30 ever

1. The U
2. The Two Escobars
3. You Don't Know Bo (one of the most underrated imo...the anecdotes are incredible)
4. Catching ****
5. The Best That Never Was
6. Winning Time : Reggie Miller vs the New York Knicks (one of the more entertaining ones)
7. June 17th, 1994

I'm not going to include the obvious choices, but I will say this. The U: Part 2 was weak as all ****, it was made to be a Butch Davis hype video, and that made it borderline unwatchable.

Unguarded--If you don't look at addiction differently after that one, I don't know what to tell you
Pony Exce$$--It was similar to "The U", but with a story that serves as an indictment of the NCAA
Two Escobars--Another Well Crafted Film
Best That Never Was--It's amazing how many people haven't heard of M. Dupree
The Marinovich Project
Requiem for the Big East--Required viewing for Miami fans, maybe our fans would understand why we were forced to leave that conference.

Honorable Mention
This Magic Moment--An underrated film, people forget about that era of the NBA

This one was unexpectedly great. It's so incredibly difficult to talk to these young'n's about the NBA these days bc their sense of history is so skewed (they'll flat out tell you Steph Curry is one of the 10 greatest players of all time). I remember this one came out and feeling refreshed that they were able to see young and lean LSU/Magic era Shaq who was an absolute force of nature. Also loved the humbling my man Hakeem gave him in the Finals.

And then Penny in his prime? I always gotta remind these jits: You think they gave him them those bad *** shoes (still the best Nike shoes imo) for nothing?

Penny was supposed to be my generation's Magic, but the knee injuries, and Shaq's ego killed it. Even Shaq himself admitted that he made a mistake leaving for LA, he was better off in Orlando, especially with a pass first point guard like Penny. Penny didn't really care about being the man, he cared about getting a fair share of the credit, period. Kobe may have turned out to be a better player, but he was a significantly worse teammate. I think Jordan's second run would have played out far differently had the Magic stayed together, I don't think the Bulls would have been able to keep them down forever.

By the way, the Penny 1s are still the best shoes I've ever played ball in. No matter which color you put those shoes in, they look amazing, same with the rest of the Penny series. Remember, the foamposites were a signature Penny shoe first, people forget that because he rarely wore them due to injuries.

I love The U but hate Billy Corben masquerading as the single source of truth for Miami story-telling. Taking the U and its sequel out of the equation entirely:

1. The Two Escobars
2. The Best That Never Was
3. Requiem for the Big East
4. Muhammad and Larry
5. I Hate Christian Laettner
6. Bad Boys
7. Four Falls of Buffalo
8. The 85 Bears
9. Benji
10. Pony Exce$$

This one makes grown men cry. Gut wrenching.

Like fr fr...the two escobars and once brothers are both like that.

Chris Herren's story "Unguarded" had me bawling the worst though. There's legit certain parts of that I can't watch anymore. The internal demons are so incredibly raw and relatable.

When he was talking about being in rehab, and his counselor telling him to call his family and tell them he wasn't ever coming home, that was tough to listen to.

Precisely

Our front office takes a lot of blame in shaq leaving also. While Alonzo Mourning and Juwan Howard just received 100 million dollar contracts, we tried to low ball him with a 4 yr 54 million dollar contract with no opt out. That allows the Lakers to step in and start wheeling and dealing their roster to get the cap to sign Shaq. Once Orlando realizes LA as a threat they offer Shaq two options: A 4 yr deal at 64 mill, or 7 yr deal for 109. But Orl was still trying to nickel and dime Shaq by doing things like nit picking the opt out year (Shaq wanted 4, Orl offered 3), and offering dummy money like incentives they knew Shaq probably would not earn. Then the infamous poll the Orlando Herald put out asking fans do they think Shaq was worth 100 million. Well the majority voted no, and combine that with Shaqs ego and is he gone.

Although, I do say, if Nick Anderson hits his freaking free throws, none of this ever happens. His confidence was shot for the rest of his career after that. He shot 9-18 in the 1st game, but then 9-32 in the rest of the series.

I hate soccer but will readily admit that The Two Escobars is the best 30 for 30 overall. I can't stand Cohen and The U was maybe the easiest one of these to make but it's obviously still a close second. Some of the 30 for 30 Shorts are actually quite good too. There's one about President Nixon deciding the college football national champion that was really interesting. The one about the Jimmy Johnson orchestrated Cowboys-Vikings trade was great too.

The short about George Bush's first pitch at Yankee Stadium after 9/11 was a good one as well

Didn't really care for The U part II. I mean I watched it because I'll watch anything Miami football related but it was a bit lacking. The first one was great.

The one about the 1983 draft

I haven't seen once brothers or two brothers although i have heard they're good.

I really thought Broke was fascinating. Just the story of Keith McCants is heartbreaking

Never saw this one , but I assume Johnson gets credit with the rise of Cowboy's that was created by the Herschel Walker trade for about 7 draft picks..

Every idiot Miami "fan" that wanted to let Grace and AQM "slide" on potential NCAA infractions needs to watch "Pony Express". I think a lot of people were too young to remember a team actually getting the death penalty but it's been thirty years and SMU never recovered.

Any one of these one and I'm watching it.

Yep. Jimmy is one of the best storytellers going too. An interesting aspect of this one was the blowback Dallas initially got for making the trade and the fact that it only ended up being so many picks because (to Minnesota's chagrin) Jimmy immediately cut a bunch of players he received in the trade that had compensatory picks attached to their names if they didn't make the Dallas roster. Jimmy also doesn't get nearly enough credit for what he did with those picks too. He made many trades within the Draft with those picks and ended up selecting some huge names. I almost blame this whole deal alone for teams today overvaluing picks in some instances.

I knew Chris back in the day so Unguarded hits home. If you put the plug in the jug, probably best to keep it there.

Jimmy invented the draft pick value sheet that is still used today. I think that in a league in which you have to stockpile young guys(You can't depend on free agency, young guys on their first contract are crucial), picks are important. They are currency, especially for a staff that can evaluate talent.
