Basically, what this thread has shown is that Mark Richt is not Nick Saban or Urban Meyer.
Here are the coaches to play for a national title during Richt's career at Georgia:
Larry Coker, Jim Tressel, Nick Saban, Bob Stoops, Pete Carroll, Mack Brown, Urban Meyer, Les Miles, Gus Malzahn, Chip Kelly, Brian Kelly, Jimbo Fisher, Gene Chizik.
So, the active coaches are:
Nick Saban x 4
Bob Stoops x 3
Urban Meyer x 3
Les Miles x 2
Brian Kelly x 1
Gus Malzahn x 1
Jimbo Fisher x 1
If you were ranking Richt as a head coach, you'd probably put him somewhere around 10th in the country. If you were expecting more, you probably had unrealistic expectations given where our program was at.
I also keep reading about how Richt didn't win the SEC enough, and how he did less with more. Georgia was 7th in the SEC in football revenue, 47% fewer resources than Alabama, 33% fewer than LSU, over 20% fewer than Florida. In fact, they were barely ahead of Kentucky! Georgia was 19th in the NCAA for public universities in revenues (barely half of what Oregon brings in).
You do with that what you will, but I can't be upset with the results he gave with the resources given. If you want to feel better about Diaz, Mississippi State was dead last in the SEC with $59.6 million in revenues. To keep his defense as competitive as he did with the resources given is quite impressive.
Solid.
I find it amusing watching these brainiacs trashing the Richt hire as if Saban or Meyer were right around the corner if we had just held out a little longer...douchebags.
Richt may or may not get it done here, but there are a few things to get excited about that did not exist in Athens:
1. The most fertile recruiting ground in his backyard;
2. Full autonomy as it relates to football decisions. Sure, it can be argued that Richt has "lost a step" from his two $EC Championship days, but were all the decisions his? Did he decide giving up play calling duties was in the best interest of the program? More likely than not, ADs, and in some cases Presidents, begin to tinker when you see a coach stay with a SEC program as long as Richt did without a NC appearance.
Richt will not be questioned by James, much less Rico Suave up top....
3. Like it or not, the $EC most years is simply a better conference. There is a reason why Jimbo wouldn't leave F$U for L$U...and it isn't because of how much more wonderful of an institution it is or all of the fond memories he has of his marriage in Trailerhassee. Coaching that may have been considered above-average in the $EC that kept a coach around well over a decade could easily put UM over the top. Keep top assistants around you that you trust, recruit the best of the best as he will try to do of course...and then proceed to play in a conference where you SHOULD only have to worry about 2 other teams that aren't even in the Coastal.
Yes, yes, yes...VT will have good years, so will GT and UNC.....but year in and year out, all things being equal, the Coastal should be in reach.
I don't like the man, but quite frankly, Saban is an anomaly. Even Alabama will come back crashing down to earth when he retires, even if Dabo took over. Same with Ohio Taint and Meyer. Soon we can might be throwing Harbaugh in that mix.
Trashing Richt by holding him up to the likes of those 2 coaches is simply a weak and short sighted comparison. Apples and oranges.
We will see what Richt's ultimate legacy will be right now. There will be nobody else to point the finger at if he doesn't succeed at UM. He is tantamount to the Head Coach and General Manager of a NFL franchise since he has a glorified intern as an AD and a soccer fan socialist as a President who wants the intern and trustees to handle everything.
