Bama Game: Pre Camp notes from their side

Yeah. I'm sure Manny is going into this game with that frame of mind.

How many seasons has Bama derailed in week 1 over the years? I hope we win, but he has to keep the bigger picture in mind.

They won last season, doesn't mean this year's players are just as good or have the same chemistry.
I know you love to worship bama and Saban but is a different season. Heisman winner DeVonta Smith gone, Mac Jones (3rd in the Heisman) gone, running back Najee Harris (5th in the Heisman) gone, wide receiver Jaylen Waddle gone, left tackle Alex Leatherwood gone, left guard Deonte Brown gone, center Landon ****erson gone, tight end Miller Forristall gone.

New QB who is inexperienced both in playing time and years out of high school. A new offensive coordinator.

Some here love to suck off Bama and call it objectivity. Well they don't win every year and with our experience and returning talent we can beat them.
But go ahead keep sucking them off.
They literally win every other year under Saban lol

They are arguably the greatest dynasty in CFB history. That is objectively a fact.

Do we have anyone that would start on bama? I dont see it im hoping players being allowed to get paid now slows down their momentum
Yes, and if yu gotta ask then yur not a canes fan! Da most important position is obvious quarterback, tightend, ( billingsly hurt or portal), bubba, ts, hedley, maybe borregales!

If they're gonna get got, it's gonna be early on with a new QB and OC (among many other spots on offense --------- who, yes, they will replace with the next NFL player. But don't **** in my cornflakes, mmkay?)
Remember, there not nfl guys just yet! Let's see them play a game first. Starter minutes are different then spot, clean-up, and sp minutes!

No reason these players shouldn’t be confident and think they can’t win. Alabama isn’t going undefeated this year. They more often don’t than do even if it doesn’t feel that way. Personnel wise I think it’s closer to even than most and won’t be outclassed. It will come down to HC and the program.

Alabama will be without WR Xavier Williams this season

Alabama's receiving corps this season will not include Xavier Williams. The redshirt junior has not been working with the team since the spring and was recently removed from the online roster. Wednesday, head coach Nick Saban spoke briefly on Williams' absence, stating that he will miss the season with an undisclosed medical condition.
"Ziggy has some medical issues that's keeping him out," Saban said. "Without saying what... he's medically not going to play this year."
Williams, 6-foot-1, 190 pounds has yet to make much of an impact at Alabama, playing behind a stacked receiving unit that has produced four first-round picks the past three years. However, the Hollywood, Fla. native did impress during spring camp where he earned plenty of praise from teammates and coaches.
“Ziggy is kind of a jack-of-all-trades,” Saban said during spring camp. “He can play about all the positions and he’s pretty good doing them all. He’s got some ability to return punts, so he’s made really nice progress. He has experience, he knows what to do. I think he can always go in the game and help out whenever he’s called on.”
Added fellow redshirt junior receiver Slade Bolden: “He’s worked hard, done everything right these last couple of years, and continues to progress. I’m excited for him, and happy he’s waited his turn the way I had to wait my turn. He’s done some very good things this spring, and I’m excited for him and hope things work out in his favor.”
Williams came to Alabama as the No. 32 wide receiver and No. 176 overall player in the 2018 class. Even with his departure, the Tide should have plenty of depth in its receiving unit as it returns Bolden, John Metchie III, Javon Baker, Traeshon Holden, Thaiu Jones Bell. Alabama also brought in four Rivals100 receivers in Ja’Corey Brooks, Jojo Earle, Agiye Hall and Christian Leary as well as Ohio State transfer Jameson Williams.

Saban provides update on Jahleel Billingsley

Saban also provided insight on Jahleel Billingsley's status after the junior tight end was absent earlier in camp. Saban explained the Billingsley had some COVID-19 protocols he had to go through before rejoining the team. The tight end on the practice field Monday and has participated in all three of the team's workouts this week.
"He needs to work his way back up sort of the depth chart because he missed a little bit of time," Saban said.
When asked about Billingsley last week, Saban brought up the junior's level of commitment when addressing his development as a player. Billingsley is coming off a breakout season last year in which he recorded 18 receptions for 287 yards and three touchdowns. He is projected to be Alabama's No. 1 option at the tight end position this year.
“He can be a positive contributor on the team,” Saban said last week. “But he’s also got to buy into the principles and values of the team and be a good teammate. Do the things that everyone else in the organization does so that he has the respect of his teammates. We’re certainly trying to help him do that and hopefully he’ll be back out there with us in a few days. We’ll see how that all develops.”

Defensively it reminds me of the 2016 team on paper. That front 7 looks like it is going to cause problems for every team they face. That said, their secondary could be vulnerable. But an OL rotation of JWilliams or Scaife/Rivers/Gaynor/Donaldson/Zion should be afraid of no one. They have all been through the tough battles and have seen it all. I would be highly disappointed if I saw some guys getting bytched and not fighting for 60min. I dont care who Bama has and how many stars they had out of HS. We got grown men too.

And that goes for our DL too. Ford, Miller, Nesta, JHH, McCloud and DeJohnson shouldnt be running from anyone. I want Saban and Bill O'Brien to leave that game and say at the post game press conference win or lose, "That is probably the best defense and defensive line we will play all year. Those guys are no joke and gave our OL fits all game". That is how I will know Mannys Defense is back.
Their OL is going to take a step back this year.

No one seems to understand this. They lost a ton and it will take time for the new kids on the block to start dominating. Meanwhile we have a ton of experience coming back and Shoop was brought in especially because of this game.

Shoop has more than 25 years experience of coaching college football, with notable stops at Mississippi State, Tennessee, Penn State, and most recently, at Michigan. Shoop is a two-time Broyles Award finalist, given to the top assistant in college football.

Shoop’s 2018 Mississippi State defense allowed just 12 touchdowns all season long, and in 2014 while at Penn State, he was named Defensive Coordinator
of the Year by 247 Sports.

The highlights , for those who don't subscribe:

1. Will Anderson, Christopher Allen and Chris Braswell and the rest of the outside linebacker crew are going to wreck shop.
Anderson and Allen closed the 2020 season strongly. In the spring, Braswell amped his game up as well. There’s a lot of talent in that group and it’s poised to break out in a major way. No one is predicting Alabama will reach the 50-sack barrier, but the quarterback pressures are going to present a major problem for opposing offenses.

2. The expectations are high for sophomore quarterback Bryce Young.

3. Bryant-Denny Stadium will be at capacity.

4. Evan Neal could be the best offensive lineman in the country.

A scout this offseason told me that Neal is a top 10 talent for next year’s NFL Draft. The move from right to left tackle happens all the time in college football, and it’s happened frequently at Alabama too. He’s down 15 pounds from his playing weight a season ago, making him a little lighter on his feet at 345 pounds.

5. Henry To’o To’o is going to bring a lot to the defense, including raising the play of Christian Harris.
Now with To’o To’o transferring from Tennessee to Alabama, the Crimson Tide linebacking unit can lay claim to being the best in the country. From that inside duo to Anderson and Allen, and the depth all around, this year’s group is absurdly talented.

6. Alabama is on schedule to be the first SEC team to repeat as conference champions since the Crimson Tide went back-to-back-to-back from 2014 to ’16.

7. Alabama extended its own record before the season even starts.

When 63 of the 65 coaches voting in the coaches poll put UA at No. 1, it continued a remarkable streak that began in 2008. At some point in every season since then, the Crimson Tide have reached No. 1 in the polls. That’s a total of 14 years.

8. Brian Robinson waited for his turn, and that time has arrived.
After waiting behind Damien Harris and Josh Jacobs and Najee Harris, Robinson, the Tuscaloosa product, is set to have a big season behind a talented offensive line. Robinson has 1,361 career rushing yards in four years, but he returned for a fifth season having yet to reach 100 carries in a season.

9. It will look a little different than what Kyle Pitts did at Florida, but Alabama has tight end weapons of its own.

Jahleel Billingsley, after being held out of the first few preseason camp practices, is back on the field and back on track. Saban called out his leadership, though, wanting him to set a better example for his teammates. But the fact remains that Billingsley will be a major weapon at tight end this season after flashing with 18 catches for 287 yards and three touchdowns last season. Cameron Latu could be a weapon too.

10. Alabama returns to Gainesville for only the second time in the Nick Saban era.

11. Nick Saban turns 70.

Saban was a spry 55 when he came to Tuscaloosa with the reputation as a nomad coach who couldn’t stay in one place too long. That reputation has been put to bed, as the seven-time national championship coach is entering his 15th season as coach of the Crimson Tide.

12. Despite being a tactic used against Alabama to negative recruit, once again there are freshmen who will play major roles on this year’s team.
wide receiver Agiye Hall , two other freshmen who could make an impact in the return game in JoJo Earle and Ja’Corey Brooks.

Then there’s the guy with the best name on the team: Kool-Aid McKinstry is putting himself in position to earn valuable playing time in the secondary. There’s also offensive tackle JC Latham, who is competing at right tackle and certainly appears to be the future.

13. A year after a record-tying six players were picked in the first round of the NFL Draft, how many first-rounders from Alabama could there be next spring?
Neal, Metchie, Christian Harris, To'o To'o, Jobe, Billingsley could be a few

14. Unless a shocking upset occurs, Alabama is going to extend its winning streak over Tennessee to 15 this season.

15. This year’s defense is set up to turn other teams over with great frequency.

It starts with the quality of players on the edge. Anderson and Allen are going to terrorize quarterbacks this year. Because of that, it’s going to create a lot of havoc. Whether it be strip sacks and forcing the ball out early to create more opportunities for interceptions, Anderson and Allen are where it starts.

The guys up the middle will contribute too, and the back end of the defense will have opportunities to make lots of plays.

16. The defense will face two of the nation’s top quarterbacks in D’Eriq King and Matt Corral.

King is going to test the discipline of the defense from jump in the first game of the season as Alabama faces Miami in Atlanta. Though he’s coming off a torn ACL in the bowl game, he’s a true dual-threat quarterback, the kind of which has given the Alabama defense problems before. King enters the season with career totals of 7,611 yards and 73 touchdowns passing and 1,959 yards and 32 touchdowns rushing.

17. The defensive line should have a good rotation to keep it fresh.

18. The streak of not losing to an unranked opponent is still going strong.

19. Name, image and likeness is all the rage in college football.
Young has deals approaching $800,000 despite not yet starting a game at quarterback.

20. First-year offensive coordinator Bill O’Brien will hold his own.

He’s not Steve Sarkisian, who has a reputation as one of the brightest play-callers in the college game after his stock took a hit when he was the offensive coordinator of the Atlanta Falcons. But O’Brien, who is going from the Houston Texans back to the college game, will more than hold his own as a play-caller with Young and a strong running game. We’re all anxiously waiting to see how he’ll use Young, but remember, this is the same guy who had Deshaun Watson in Houston. He’ll figure out a way to maximize Young’s talents.

Exactly what I have been saying about the Bama offense. Way too many unknowns to say they are going to roll over teams this year. Young only got mop up duty. Robinson is a 5th year senior that hasn't broken 500 yards in a season yet. Metchie is the only WR on the roster that did anything last year. Throw in that Bill O'Brian's offenses in Houston were underwhelming even with one of the best QBs in the league.
And a very meh defense to boot!
