Awesome game given situation...now comes a real trap at UNC (Belichick/Petrino)

Exactly! I’ve already learned that lesson before. But to be fair I don’t think it was a fight. Instead a dialogue. That apparently was misunderstood .

Dialogue rarely starts with tampon gifs and insults but lets get back to scheduled programming

The trap game talk is interesting. For me, Cristobal's team has more issues with bye week games versus trap games. Last year did we have a trap game situation? Perhaps the VT game was a trap game because they lost their coach and Pitt was up next. But I am not sure that about that.

Louisville and SMU were both traps in my book. SMU was the one I had circled before the season. When we played them they were coming off a loss at Wake, and already had 3 losses on the year.

It is losing games we shouldn't have lost. So far we avoided that this season. Let's keep it up.

Night game. On the road. In a place we haven't played well. Against a young team that plays off and on.

Not sure why there is a multi-page battle royal about moping when no one is moping... ******* weirdos that keep bringing up moping and hating Mario.

**** UNC. 1-0.

Remember someone in the weekly game thread posting that UNC really doesn't score outside of scripted drives, and lemme tell that poster was right. On the first 2 drives of the first half and first drive of the second, UNC has scored 61 points, which is 45% of their total points against P4 opponents. 3.4 points/drive on those 18 drives. UNC only averages 2.2 points/drive on all the rest of their non-garbage time drives.

Louisville was not a trap game. Brohm has always given Mario fits. They were definitely not overlooking them.

And SMU? Not sure how anyone would have been overlooking that game. We had Syracuse after them. There is no logic they overlooked a road game to play a terrible team at home the following week.

Did they lose both games? Yes. Doesn't mean it was a trap game. And the definition of a trap game is not losing a game favored in. Typically a trap game means overlooking any opponent in anticipation of the next one.

Respectfully, the definition of trap game is not losing games you are favored in. It is overlooking one opponent in anticipation of the next.

Grind them down in the running game and then get it to Toney to blow their doors off.

I would call that a “look ahead” spot. Not exactly the same thing, but can be depending where on the context.

You can say that the team should have been ready to play those games, but the fact was they weren’t. In the case of Louisville we were coming off the FSU win and being talked about at the best team in the country by some, while UL had just lost to Virginia.

You’re right that not every game you’re favored to win but end up losing is a trap, and In the end we’re debating a subjective term but to me a trap is a game where you’re favored to win comfortably, say by at least 2 scores, but there’s underlying reasons a team might not be completely mentally focused.

Call it what you want, but Mario's issues have been losing games to teams his teams are more talented then. Some of that has been failure to adapt or address issues until a loss or two. This may be a trap game and/or a game against a less talented team. Either way, win it.

Bill Belichick is way past his prime. If he is the legend some want him to be, UNC would have done what Cignetti did at IU. He is the most glaring example of “needs a QB.” He has not done **** at either level since the Brady era.
You think Mario’s 2023 was better?

Petrino is still pretty good at those scripted drives and I think overall he’s squeezing the most he can out of Billy Edwards and that group. They’ve managed to score at least 20 points in all their games other than the opener against TCU. Weak as that sounds it’s probably an accomplishment

They have played against above average defenses too according to this metric too (unsure how much of this is ND vs the rest of their sched)

Agreed!

Fair enough. I actually agree this is a "trap game". My question is, how has Mario's team fared in trap game situations? That seems to be subjective.

Fair all around. I think fans may be looking at any game as a trap game from the perspective of UNC (likely a true trap game) is right before ND, but games like SMU, Syracuse, etc in the past or our final month of games this year are between us and the playoffs or ACC Championship game.

And for me -- when we ask how did we lose a game to that team with our season on the line? it is because we did the same **** things in that game that cost us in previous games (even wins)... self induced mistakes... lack of adjustments, etc.
