First game for a first time head coach, against the 8th ranked team in the country.
First game for a new staff, against the 8th ranked team in the country.
First game for a freshman quarterback, against the 8th ranked team in the country.
First game for our left and right freshman OTs, against the 8th ranked team in the country.
Our first time quarterback completed 63% of his passes and threw for over 200 yards with 1 TD and ZERO INTs and averaged 7.1 YPA.
Our first time head coach lost to the 8th ranked team in the country by 4 points on a neutral field.
We won the turnover battle, held them to 1.8 YPC (on 28 rushing attempts), and had a shot to win the game at the end.
Was the play-calling perfect? No. And it never will be. But our freshman quarterback threw a TD (should have been two but for drops) and ZERO pics on 30 attempts (and constant pressure) against a darn good defense.
There is plenty of room to improve. And this team will improve tremendously... even over the next 3-4 weeks. The freshman who saw their first real college game action WILL GET BETTER.
We get absolutely rolled by this Gator team last year.
And we will absolutely be better than this 8th ranked Gator team by November of this year.
This team has to learn how to win. Today was a lesson that will shape a better tomorrow. I still remember all the sky-is-falling chicken littles after UW in 2000.
This is going to be a great season... and the start of something very special.
