Ask yourself: Why was Boston College's Defense so dominant?

their offense was a11 at milking the clock as well...good lord..they loved 15 play drives...they might as well ran the wing t

Other top 25 defenses who play similar schedules to BC padded with 6+cupcakes...see how easy it is to polish a ****?

#11 App St
#15 Akron
#16 W Michigan
#17 Utah St.
#20 Temple
#21 GA Southern

Remember when coach D had the #16 total defense at temple in 2010..........**** outta here.

Except BC ranked in the top 5 in S&P defense, an advanced stat that weighs schedules and eliminates garbage time stats.

They held Louiville, wake, duke, and ND to their lowest scores in a game all season. FSU to their second lowest. This with a BC offense that couldn't stay on the field.

BC defense was legit.

But did they beat a single FBS team? Dominant is not the adjective here.

We will know when we see the play on the field. I expect a complete chance in approach -- taking the attack to the offense with violence. If we see that, then all will be well. Depth and youth might impact the final results but the nature of new defense should be there to see. If it isn't then new DC will be needed immediately. Mark doesn't have 10 years.

Wait and see mode with Manny Diaz for me. He lead a defense that gave up 600yds rushing, I believe against BYU, than was fired. He has a decents resume but by no means should we feel confident with him yet.

I find that to be so.. awkwardly unreal, that it makes me wonder if diaz wanted out so bad he just bit a bullet that game and let byu go HAM

It probably has something to do with their horrific scheduling. Maybe you should look a little further into the stats before you embarrass yourself hooker. I know your shtick from your trolling days on 247 sports.

Don brown is great but their schedule helped

Schedule had nothing to do with it. Brown's defense showed their heart no matter who they played...Florida State, Clemson, Notre Dame, Louisville and others.

Gave up 30+ points once...to Clemson. PURE defense kept them in that game. Clemson lead 17-10 at halftime...in Clemson. We gave up 58 to Clemson. BC held FSU and ND to under 20 points.

We have all the ingredients to be a very good defense this year.

They played on average the #75 ranked offenses. Like i said hot garbage. You guys really need to learn how statistics work this is kind of embarrassing.

Total Offense Ranking
Maine #150 (there's no total offense rank for D2, assigning #150 )
Howard #150 (there's no total offense rank for D2, assigning #150 )
Florida State #51
Northern Illinois #66
Duke #36
Wake Forest #114
Clemson #11

Notre Dame #27
Syracuse #119

We have an entire defensive unit that is true freshmen. The entire unit. You sprinkle in a true freshman on a unit here or there and a lot of times that's ok. Especially if there are experienced veterans filling out the unit to help guide the youngsters and cover for mistakes. We don't have that at lb. These guys may be athletic, they may be talented, but they lack experience. They will make mistakes. They will be fooled by the offense. They will fill the wrong gap. They'll take a bad angle. They'll blow an assignment. This isn't being a naysayer, this isn't making excuses, this is reality. These freshmen lbs will also make some great plays this year and I have no doubt they'll be really really good next year and beyond. But make no mistake, there will be some bumps along the way this year as they learn and gain experience on this level.

Well, you lose the versatility that Grace would have brought to the table. We were going to run a lot of 4-2-5 and Grace gave you a linebacker's body who ran like an elite safety. Now we're forced to run a defensive back. We'll see how this goes at linebacker. Yes, they'll make some mistakes but they're backed up by 4 seniors in the secondary assuming Colbert gets the start. Two of the four are 5th year seniors. I think what Miami wants to do upfront will take some pressure off our linebackers. Kool seems to be excited about Norton and McIntosh and coming from this guy this is very promising. There are being backed up by three 3rd year players (Willis, Jenkins and Moten).

Define "very good defense" ? We were #86 in the country last year giving up 5.78 yds/play. How much better do you expect to be this year?

I think you are one year early but I hope you are right.

We will know if we have any shot at top 30 after the first 3 or 4 games. If we are not in the top 20 after the 3 easiest games on our schedule then we got no shot at top 30.

They only played 6 games last year?

Exactly.

The 6 game squeeze fits into his narrative better.

The correct narrative is that BC played on average the 75th ranked offense and didn't win a single game vs FBS. Sounds dominant right?

BC played 3 ranked opponents and did well -#34 in total D

Playing well might earn you a yellow ribbon at the YMCA....probably a little debbie cake and capri sun too. All i'm saying is BC's defense was far from dominant.

Also begs the question "better at what?" Yds/play? Total yards? Points allowed? Sacks? Turnover margin? I think our yards per game average will be better, but not worlds better.

I think our ppg allowance should go down fairly significantly - we were 86th last year in scoring defense giving up 30 ppg. I think we should see somewhere in the mid-20s this year, hopefully better (that'd be top 35-45 last year, for reference - a jump of 40ish spots.)

Where I wager you'll really see a difference is in rush defense (we were 106th last year), red zone defense (107th) and sacks per game (70th.) We were good for 2 sacks/game last year. I'd like to see that number up closer to 2.5-3, which would put us in the top 10-25.

Just some different ways to measure a good defense.

Yds/play/ Total yards/ Points allowed -You basically have the same 10 teams in the top spots in those 3 categories for 2015 and so these seem to be the best indicators for how well a D performs.

With sacks you see a team like Arz St in the top 10 yet they were 99 in scoring D.

Same with a TO margin where our Canes were #10 in 2015 yet we were ..you know ..not so good.

The ones I'll be looking at the closest are red zone defense, sacks per game, TFL, and... 3RD DOWN DEFENSE! All for different indicators, of course.

I'm not sure if our PPG defense will really improve all that much. We should play faster on offense.

Red zone defense, sacks per game, TFL were not very good indicators last year of who the top D teams were.

3rd Down D was definitely a stat were the top D teams all excelled at !!!
