The point I bolded is what I wanted to discuss. I can’t recall what thread or maybe it was a PM, but this is the part that this fan base love to hold on to, “flashed.”
When talking about our stadium issue, what do the proponents of staying there love to highlight? 2017 ND game. There, it “flashed” at what a home game “could” be. Every time a player is defended, they’ll bring up a play or moment in that player’s career.
The problem is, we’ve had way too many player’s who have “flashed” potential, but not been consistent with it. If u ever wanna know why we’ve been a consistent, on avg., 7-5 team since 2004 it’s b/c for all the stars we’ve brought in, the greater majority of them have either flashed or been straight bust. I used to get caught up in that, as well, as recent as Lo Lingard running for that 80 yrd scamper against SSt; he flashed that game. He’s no where to be found, now.
Jaylan has fumbleitis;
2020 - 9 games (3 fumbles)
2021 - 8 games (2 fumbles)
2022 - 6 games (3 fumbles)
That’s 23 games w/ 8 fumbles or every 1 out of 3 games, he’s coughing up the ball. That’s an absurd ratio. The fact is, it’s not like he’s so valuable on the field where his production can overcome these moments; he’s a career 3.9 ypc back. But, b/c he flashed or had a flash moment against UNC or a flash game against GT, that discounts the other games where he was either fumbling, avg. 2.5 ypc or both.
What we love here is “potential”, & potential is not what teams like Bama, OSU, Clemson, UGA, and the rest of the upper echelon teams rely upon. We have had very few stars & a slew of “potential” guys who have “flashed.” We need more consistent guys who are rock steady + stars that r complimented by guys who can flash.
