Another Jimmy Johnson Bowl special. Great coach, but he choked on bowl games like he was eating coffee grounds. The Tennessee debacle and the Penn State games were two of the worst excuses for coaching and preparation imaginable.....especially with the talent those teams had.
The reason for Miami's collaspse was different for both bowl games.
In the Sugar Bowl, a good portion of the team was partying up on Bourbon Street the night before the game. They were a lot of hungover guys who were in the no shape to play a football game. It was a **** shame because we wasted a NC with the team's pitiful effort.
For the Fiesta Bowl, virtually the entire team was focused like a laser beam. And it didn't help that Vinny was rusty coming off an injury. I just wished he hadn't spent so much time doing Heisman interviews and chasing tail.
And unlike the Sugar Bowl performance, Miami's defense was awesome in the Fiesta Bowl. Except for one good drive, Penn State's offense was completely shut down. If Miami had won that game, college football fans would have talked about Jerome Brown and that defensive performance for years - instead of Vinny's interceptions.
It took a monumental collaspe by the offense to give Penn State the W. And Miami still almost won with 7 TOs.
And in fairness to Vinny, there were a number of guys who didn't play well on offense. The OL's pass protection was **** poor. Except for Blades, none of the WRs and TEs played well (even Irvin had one of his worst games as a Hurricane).
