All time “What may have been” Team

QB - Kyle Wright

Still one of the highest rated prospects in the history of 247 sports.

Four offensive coordinators and two head coaches during his five years on campus. IMO Kyle Wright is the epitome of what may have been.

No, because he was overrated. Kyle was the epitome of a guy that didn't have it between the ears. Even guys playing under crap coaches would have moments. Kyle never had that,he was a camp guy. Inaccurate as ****, soft as ****, weak leadership skills.

James Stewart. Picked up on and off injuries and suspensions before becoming the usual starter in 1994. Goes to the Vikings, gets hurt, gets arrested, gone from the league.

Rare combination of size and speed for a RB at 6'2" 230 and a sub-4.5 40.

He might be a HOF specialist but Devin Hester

dude could have been Tyreke Hill before Hill…. Coker and his bullcrap staff could never figure out how to harness that talent into their “pro style bro” offense
Devin couldn't play receiver at the NFL level either. For as great as he was as a returner, he lacked something as a receiver. There's plenty to blame Coker for, but Devin showed himself to be iffy as an offensive player.

for Me Britton is the one who I wish I would had seen play more but he played behind some beasts. On offense Najeh. Saw plenty of him but he was a man amongst boys.

Anthony Reddick. This guy imo was the next great Miami safety. Had a knee injury in what 04? and was never the same player.
Rusty Medearis. Definition of unblockable until that bag of vomit Arizona lineman deliberately blew out his knee.
Agree on Reddick. Believe he may have had two knee injuries. Kid was going to be a great safety.

It was the helmet incident that derailed him.

Dam cant think of the name but he played wr and rb for us. Wore #3. Played with Willis and Andre. He was a big boy and ended up playing in candian league and in the arena league for years.

What's hyperbole? Anyone who saw him extensively at Gables High or wants to go back and watch his freshman UM highlights realizes as great as his career has been, it would have been that much better had he not blown out his knees.
I know all about Gore. As a freshman i told friends at the time that had he gone to a running school like Nebraska he would win a heisman trophy. And i still wouldn't have placed him in the category of barry sanders or bo jackson..Not a knock on Gore at all

DE Kevin ***an
Blew a knee in last game, Sugar Bowl loss to Tennessee. Would have been Top 10-15 pick, went to 49ers mid-rounds instead. Played well, and won two SB rings. Unrealized potential.

RB Alonzo Highsmith
Blew a knee at the Oilers, never fully recovered.

RB Najeh Davenport
Injured knee against Ohio State 1999 opener. Team guy, switched to fullback. Freak athlete but the Canes had James Jackson, Portis, Willis, and Gore 2000-2001. Injured in Rose Bowl practice, missed NC game. Made plays in the NFL but could not stay healthy.

WR Horace Copeland
Was developing into a serious deep threat at Tampa Bay but blew a knee and never recovered.

DE Jerome McDougal
First round pick by Philadelphia. Injuries and shooting victim, never lived up to potential.
Cant believe i forgot Najeh…

Don't forget about the college hall of fame talent that sadly departed way too early. Dude was violent and fluid. I remember the quotes: "Are you practicing as hard as Eddie Johnson?"

This kid was good. And then, he was gone. I would have liked to have raised rabbits in Montana and watched this kid play his full career at UM.

Dan Morgan and Matt Britton on the same list? I don’t get it.

Morgan was the most decorated LB in UM history. Britton blew out a knee before he ever really got to show what he could do.

Britton performed well in 1991 and his strength was apparent. He played a few series and was brought in sometimes in short yardage situations. He was great. But he was backing up the Bermuda Triangle. That’s like backing up Cal Ripken Jr.

Watching some random UM games on YouTube from the glory years brought back some memories of players that never fulfilled their immense potential due to unfortunate injuries either while at UM or in the pros. So many heartbreaking examples…feel free to add to the list.

Come on, man, you started an "all time" team and then left spots blank.

Depends on how deep you want to go on this.

For instance, at QB, you could look at "HS phenoms that never developed", like Chris Walsh and Alan Hall, or you could look at UM greats who never fulfilled their potential in the NFL, such as Toretta and Dorsey.

And on DL, let's not omit Dewey Johnson.

Soooo many names to add. ****, you could do a "pre-Butch" list and a "Butch-onward" list.
