All-22 Review of the 'Canes defense vs. UNC

I would like to see us blitz the slow LBs instead of DBs from 30 yards away. Mo was great as a blitzer last year but we havent seen it this year. Is Heatherman saving it? I don't get the free releases and leaving the middle of the field open the way we do. CBs are constantly bailing also and completely taking themselves out of the play. DBs never in position to make plays on the ball. Crazy we are doing all this to avoid big plays in the passing game but still giving up big plays in the passing game. Obviously what we are doing isnt working. Gotta mix things ups.

I'm ok with bringing a DB ON OCCASION, but that seems to be most/all we've seen - Thornton and JJ blitzing. I'm all for bringing Toure and Chase (not really together) and letting our DBs play in coverage.
As for the coverages, I'm not an expert by any means on secondary play. However, we NEED to play some press man - even if we suck at it - to try to keep the other team's offense semi honest. Not jamming the RBs and TEs is lazy/stupid.

We all raved about Hetherman last year. I don't think he got stupid in the off season. I am hoping beyond hope that he can get us playing at a better clip.

I can't believe for a second that he is saving it as if he was, it would be really stupid considering 2 of our last 3 games we were in competitive games down the the final seconds.

I don't think he got stupid, but maybe he got figured out and/or he doesn't have the type of players he needs to be effective even if he does have (at least) decent players. Guidry looked pretty good his first year and then the bottom fell out - hoping this is not the same.

So one thing I've learned in my 50+ years on this planet is that football coaches generally have very hard heads and large egos that accompany this smartest guy in the room phenomenon. That doesn't mean EVERY coach has it, nor that it's all to the same degree, but most coordinators and up have this "I know better than you" mentality (see Matt Patricia for an obvious example). Some coaches are better than others at tamping it down. I mention all this because I am praying Hetherman isn't one of those "I got this" coaches who believes their system is the only and best way to win.

Back to your comment.... I think he has figured out that his personnel is lacking this season, in large part because of the injuries in the secondary. I think he has sold out against the run and conceded the intermediate plays. I think we aren't getting as much pass rush because of the quick timed passes that have been coming at us. We actually had four sacks last game. One resulted in a fumble that we recovered. So it's not like we aren't getting any pressure, it's that teams are making it tough for us to get pressure because they're taking those intermediate plays. If we can find a way to just reduce the other teams' success on those plays by 30%, I think we run the gauntlet and win the whole thing. If we don't, it's a coin toss. One bad break and we lose. I don't know what happened with Guidry. He did look pretty good his first year and then we STUNK; like worse than right now. I'm not as harsh on Hetherman as others on here are because of the injuries and watching guys like Guidry come and go. I mean anyone who sat through the D'Onofrio defense years knows bad defense.

Eh... I would buy into this more if the secondary was getting exposed by great offenses, but they are getting exposed by teams who put up average yards against average teams. Do we really think that Syracuse, Duke, VT, UVA, Louisville and Pitt all have a bunch of NFL players in the secondary? Or that all of those teams have more talent on defense than us?

I understand if we are talking comparing our secondary to national title contenders, but I am just comparing how our D made our last 3 opponents' QBs look compared to how they looked versus other teams.

Even Pitt's QB who had a crappy day against us still fared better than most of the other teams he played

Kind of my point right? They aren’t good. Is it talent or coaching/scheme I don’t know enough to say. It’s really bad however you slice it

It's the same CB room as last season. The only DBs we lost were Scott and Thomas. Although both those guys are studs, the fact that we have this much of a drop-off is a head-scratcher. On paper, it should be one of the best in the country
Scott and Thomas were the bosses in the back. Particularly Scott. They covered up alot of stuff. And they directed the others.

All the real vocal leaders on defense are gone: Bain, Mesidor, Scott.... Toure has tried to pick up the slack.
I think guys playing out of natural position is causing far more problems than acknowledged....

Thinking positive for this week. It's now or never...

there is no excuse for how poor this pass defense has been. Everyone playing currently played last year except Wilson, Thornton and Dunnigan. Get it the **** together boys. everyone knows the defense. Be better

We won't lose to ND this weekend--bet. Our M.O. is to lose games we're not supposed to lose.

I'm more worried about Boston College to be honest.

Wrs arent killing us. ND doesnt have elite outside wrs. Need to put bryce back at fs. This allows poyser to play his natural position. Now you e shored up two spots. Eoc,lucas, brown, mack, whomever, let them play outside. I mean we are 120th with bryce at corner. Its not like its going to get much worse if he was somehow doing anything out there. Lose a little in the run game to shore up the pass d anyway possible. Take out Smith or toure on any 3rd down over 5 yards. You supposedly have 2 great DTs. Let them stuff the run. Toure to help clean up and play poyser a little closer to the line. Outside of Duce on one play, nobody has really gotten over the top. Why are we so scared of this?

This might go down as the worst passing defense in the history of Miami football. How is that possible. Is the talent that subpar(I think it’s part of the problem) are they not smart enough to play zone, do they not practice, is it injuries? This is wild to watch play out so far this year.
We went from this thread to your post

The entire DL are 5-stars, no? There's plenty of enough talent there. Just have to adjust to use them properly. Some of this cannot be fixed in-season (angles, tackling technique, OODA Loop/eyes)
Lightfoot, Scott, Blount, Wilson (HS)- yes

Motin was a 3 star. plus: Nagle, Bacon, Davis,

Layfette, Charles, Stancil,Campbell(maybe LB),Sainteus,Chukwurah,Carter-4*

You’ve been harping on the tackling for a while now and showing videos of other programs be what we preach and teach. Think it’s time you’re fully recognized for being on it.

Aside from that, this is what I have a problem with, too:

That is a lot of space and comfort. 7 on 7 folks have tighter windows and more stress.
This is what I have seen a lot this season. If we are in zone why is there that much space? Is it communication? Is it blown assignments?

I understand our backers getting worked in coverage. Not that I like it, but they are liabilities in coverage which is why I understand so much zone. But feel like we are leaving the middle of the field far too open.

Those aren't minor losses. Those two were almost as important as Bain and Mesidor to our defense last year. Add the injuries which causes us to play guys out of position. That said, IMO now's the time to move Bryce back to FS and keep Poser at SS. Those two don't fit the role we're asking them to play right now.

I'm not saying I'm totally happy with Heatherman. He's not doing a good job with this defense. But in his defense, there are additional factors at play.

Not really. One CB was lost Game 1 & other missed several games & doesn’t appear to be the same player.
