I doubt they gave a rookie HC sole authority to hire and fire assistants. It would be criminally negligent.

Its one of the reasons I believe Pete when he talks about Blake James and Jenn Strawley. He was there intimately for years. Knows everyone. He's seen these people from multiple angles as a reporter, as a student, as a guy, and now as an agent and liaison. The fact that he's a fan allows him to take things a little more personal.

Its always been a ****show in there. They were harboring a pedophile and tens of gigabytes of child pornography on their own servers and no one knew **** until some lowest level tech specialist found it when they were updating the computers. It was 10 years ago.

People agree to modify their contract under threat of termination all the time. There’s no ‘lawsuit’ of the century. Just damages for termination if they refuse. And the issue isn’t the term of Manny’s contract, it’s just the remedy for early termination (severance, i.e.). I have always wondered why contract law, which disfavors penalty damages, will enforce multi-million dollar buyouts in college coaching contracts.

Negotiations rarely work like this, though with longer contracts and more aggressive buyout penalties, they could get there, I suppose.

What’s the typical term for a new coach? 4 years? He doesn’t know what he’s stepping into, so he’s not going to agree to take all the risk if the first two years are tough. New guy, new system, injuries, talent, etc. who knows.

Maybe you make a big deal out of the third year early term right if he sucks, but my guess is you do not hire a coach you actually want by making that the contract term you care most about. Negotiations signal things. If that’s the big idea term to push, you’re probably hiring the wrong guy or agreeing to too much severance as a general matter.

I think this alpha male fear stuff is a bit over played. It's really about politics, power, and control. Blake's hiring of AH to take over football with ability to hire and fire is an admission he can't handle the AD job and giving up some of his power. Manny would see it as taking control away from him to choose or let go his own assistants and having Big Brother breathing down his neck.

AH is not wanting to come in to be someone's do boy either.

If they are bringing AH they need to redefine this CoS role to suit him, take advantage of the expertise he can bring, whether the salary structure is commensurate with that new role, and agreeable to all parties. This may take time.

Biggest role Highsmith has had (besides gig he was fired from) was Director of Personnel at Green Bay. In some cases it means just being head scout. I don't know what other opportunities AH has now but he may have lost some negotiating leverage he once had.

He might be willing to take a lesser role (and wait until something better comes around) and still be able to do something useful to help the program and stay employed. That and he is coming back home. Not necessarily a bad place to land from a fall considering he may have no other alternatives at the moment.

So the same university which has fired more coaches than an old Navy ship has fired lead is legally bound with regards to hiring and firing assistant coaches? The same school which has no issue with paying fired coaches 27 cents a month.

So, Highsmith was going to be the savior of the program? Give me a break.

Some of you guys just need to accept reality. Blake is the AD. He would not give up final say on any aspect of the athletic program (especially the football team) to another person. He made the terrible hire of Manny and is allowing him a second season to right the ship. The 2020 season is obviously a make or break year for Manny, but it is for Blake as well since the Manny hire is on him.

Basically, letters to the BOT and President of the university demanding the firing of Blake James seem to be the only way of getting change. Aside from that, nothing will change - even if Highsmith were hired as a "Football Chief of Staff".

Most of he people here who hate Ferman were former premium members that were very happy to pay up $9.99 every month for his info,including myself.I still see some posters here who try and act to cool and above the freight and they too were former customers of not only canesport but a site he ran in the 90s called cybercane where he somehow was able to get Butch Davis on every wednesday night to do a live chat and answer our questions.Imagine Diaz doing something like that today.
