Alabama ain’t got no money?

Portal is definitely a factor, but I'd say it's probably a combination of multiple things:
  • Like you said, they aren't able to hold guys hostage, so transfer portal allows for more PT elsewhere.
  • They're not the only ones able to pay top highschool talent anymore.
  • They're also not the biggest purse anymore (the whole point of this thread). A car and $250k no longer moves the needle.
  • Expanded playoff (with talks of doing more) means more teams have a chance to get in, so you don't have to flock to a handful of teams to get a playoff opportunity.
  • Wider media coverage means you'll still get noticed by scouts; you don't have to play for blueblood programs anymore to get noticed. (Vikings just put an undrafted dude from Morgan State on their 53-man roster).
They'll continue to have top classes, but not having those extra 3-4 bluechips a year adds up over a 4-year period. Not as much depth>less competition>player complacency (which we're reading smoke on in Bama)>worse results. Add in a coaching staff that doesn't hold guys as accountable as Saban did...we saw this story under Coker.
Sorry if this is a dumb question but why was Bama able to pay athletes without getting in trouble but Ole Miss, Ohio State, Miami etc. got shafted? I never understood the reason why they got special treatment. Did Saban have some dirt on Mark Emmert? Were their car dealerships just better at laundering the cash?

It’s also much easier to keep things quiet in an insulated place like Tuscaloosa. If someone in the Tuscaloosa area put out their version of the LeBatard article they’d have to go in witness protection.

Ole Miss probably would’ve gotten away with it too if not for a) their uptick in spending directly impacting Bama and b) their players being completely reckless in their social media posts. Like dumbest **** you’ll ever see type ****.

Not that he's our family but I was shocked to see Nevin Shapiro at the game in box seats with his squad

You’d think he would have been trespassed from UM events, also how the **** is no one head hunting this man? He scammed millions out of high profile folks someone’s gotta be looking for him and he ain’t hiding 🤣
Apparently this **** has the nerve to have a youtube channel talking Canes football

Yeah the Emmert connection isn't remotely subtle and there was a huge conflict of interest. I actually wouldn't say Bama recruits were any less careful as they were constantly flashing cash on visits and cars on social; Emmert just made the NCAA look the other way because of his friendship and Bama brings eyeballs (and bigger media deals). The irony is Emmert's actions fighting ANY kind of compensation directly led to NIL as we see it today because they ended up going to court rather than working something out ammicably. It's not a coincidence Saban and Emmert got out at the same time.

Oh, they definitely weren’t subtle but I don’t think I remember Treadwell levels of flaunting it online lol

Bama is in trouble. The shine is off, and you don't need to spend three years in Tuscaloosa to get paid now. It's no coincidence that Saban left when he did. I've mentioned before that my daughter attends an SEC school, and they're having a tough time recruiting now with NIL.
Miami is in a great position right now if they can win consistently. Strong NIL, great campus, beautiful weather, diverse population, national exposure...

I wouldn't say "most" of the money is spent, but you make a fair point. Certain portal positions (QB, DT) do get paid, but to land a Top 5 high school class, you pay for every position.

I'd also say that you probably don't need SUCH a great Portal class when you are signing perennial Top 5 high school classes.

I don't have context how those numbers compare with the other big time P4 schools. The right numbers to look at is a blend average of HS recruiting rankings with portal rankings.

there was a salary cap of sorts when payments were "under the table" as opposed to free agency we are seeing now. Bama could play the game then not now outside of Paul Bryant JR, Bama is not a rich state or school. sure they would like to get rid of DeBoer but how do you "pay off the HC and staff & have another pile of $$$ for NIL ?
guys like Jimbo who got paid 75M$ are another stratosphere . maybe 10+ programs can afford that $ and ave a strong NIL program
