Al Golden - What Went Wrong?

Yeah, people make it sound like Richt took over the 1997 squad or something. I will say this for Richt, from a standpoint of infrastructure, facilities, etc, he did move the program into the 21s century
Anyone would’ve done that

Guy had a degree in psychology and was constantly testing everyone. No one could have a conversation with him or anyone in the building without it having repercussions. He had that thing running like 1984. He completely lost the locker room and no one trusted him. Also, everyone resented his unwillingness to do anything about the defensive coaching and knew how much that was holding the team back.

If he would have shxtcanned No'D and went with a different direction, he probably wouldn't have been fired in 2015.

You wanna know what happened? I'll show you what happened.

It's October 14th, 2014. I look down at the field and every time we're on defense this is what I see:

Capture.webp

GT was 4/7 passing the entire game. And every time I looked down at the field I nearly had an aneurysm. Why is everyone so far off the ball? We look like we're playing cover 4. Our safeties are 12 ******* yards off the ball against a team that throws 7 times a game.

Golden's hiring and continued loyalty to his BFF DC is what went wrong.

The fallacy Richt left this program in better shape then he inherited is the biggest BS. What Diaz has done in a short time is nothing short of remarkable. Remember Richt had 10 guys drafted his first year, Richt didn’t all of a sudden make these kids better. Golden and Richt were the exact same coaches. Loyal to themselves and refused to make moves to better the program. Golden wouldn’t fire the worst defensive mind in football and Richt wouldn’t fire the worst offensive mind in football and his unqualified son.

If taking back Jeff Thomas wasn’t the biggest F U and opened your eyes then I don’t know what is. Exciting times ahead.
The only difference is the IPF... but that would’ve happened anyway. Both were incompetent here.

Golden=Bull**** artist. End of story. Guy was a crock of **** as a person and a coach. When he snuck out of town to try to get the PSU job, it just proved he was a no character a-hole BS artist. Makes me puke.

I remember that. He certainly would have gone to Penn State if offered. Just think...had they won the Louisville game he might have gotten it.

[QUOTE="Canesfan0024, post: 3831208, member: 10229"]The fallacy Richt left this program in better shape then he inherited is the biggest BS.

It never fails to amaze me as to the cluelessness of some.

Let me ask you this question...do you think the indoor practice facility made the program better?

How about hiring Coach Diaz, did that make the program better?

What about convincing the BOT that assistant coaches salaries had to be materially increased?

How about College GameDay visiting the UM campus for the first time ever and all of the positive PR generated from said broadcast?

How about winning the ACC Coastal for the first time ever?

How about being invited to a major bowl for the first time in double-digit years?

Yes, last year was very disappointing but to even hint that Coach Richt didn't greatly improve the program after the..."Golden Years"...is patently false and absurd.
Gotta disagree Earny,
The on field success richt had in 2017, along with gameday, had zero long term impact on the program. Recruiting fell off, performance fell off, and other than the ability to say we won the coastal, it hasn’t changed the way the program is viewed. The program Richts last day was viewed as it was on his first day.

Also, richt didn’t get admin to pony up money. They did that on their own go get him. In fact, he refused to use the money bot offered for an OC... he obviously didn’t force the change in spending habits.

If he could have beaten FSU and canned his best friend he might have lasted longer. The school wanted to do right by him after he lied and said he wasn't aware of an impending investigation when hired. There was obviously no choice after losing 58-0 but the RAB vs Louisville was when he should have at least fired his co-ordinators.

That was one thing I've always wondered about. I knew a bit about the Shapiro story based on local reporting MONTHS before the Yahoo story in August 2011. If I knew, how could Golden at least not be aware of rumblings?

Now that's the stuff I'm interested in. Players really couldn't talk to him without any conversation being twisted and turned back on them?!

UM Stepping Up, Giving Richt Everything He Wanted

MIAMI HERALD

With a capable athletic director (Blake James) who has excelled at fundraising and negotiated a lucrative deal with Adidas, a Board of Trustees that authorized a 25 to 30 percent pay hike for assistant football coaches and a football coach (Mark Richt) who has been given most everything he requested.

The upshot is that the UM players are benefitting from this, too, with the hope that it will boost performance.

“Everything coach Richt has said he's going to get for us, he's gotten for us,” offensive lineman Kc McDermott said. “And the list keeps getting bigger.”

The boost in pay for assistant coaches helped UM land defensive coordinator Manny Diaz, offensive line coach Stacy Searels and defensive line coach Craig Kuligowski at competitive rates, with UM outbidding Georgia Tech for Searels.

“We got all the guys coach Richt wanted based on the pool we established,” James said last week.

One NFL executive said the quality of the UM coaching staff has been significantly upgraded with UM willing to pay more.

Several players said new machinery has been added in the weight room, at Richt’s request. Also, Richt was given authority to hire more staffers.

“The major difference is we have tons and tons of graduate assistants and coaches now,” McDermott said, while still in accordance with NCAA rules that limit the number of designated coaches. “More people around making sure everyone is doing their own thing.”

Richt received the go-ahead to hire a football-only nutritionist.

Richt also got the green light to expand the breakfast and lunch options, putting UM on par with FSU’s diet-conscious approach under Jimbo Fisher. Odogwu said players are now greeted with healthy shakes, and more, after practice.

“We needed a nutritionist really bad and we got that,” McDermott said. “The quality of food we're eating is much better. It has taken care of our bodies. Pretty much anything we've ever thought of, coach Richt, he does everything. He donated $1 million of his own money to the indoor facility! He really cares about us.”

What’s more, Richt was given increased use of a private plane for recruiting, which could help UM land more top players from rural areas.

This.
It was in the news months before his hire. If he didn’t know his agent sucks.
